Title: 99 Spec turbos
Post by: SiH on November 13, 2007, 12:50:09 PM
Hey guys :)
Well, i\'ve finally found my car - a \'94 FD in Japan.
However, it\'s advertised as having 99 spec turbos - I understand form a bit of searching that these flow slightly better - is this correct?
My concern is about the safety of running them on stock management - Would i be best to use this as an excuse for a PFC and remap?! :D or would they be ok to run on the \'94 ecu? Only other engine mod as far as i can tell is a cat-back.
Any advice much appreciated :)
Si

I\'d suggest the PFC (or similar ECU) anyway, if it has a free flowing exhaust with uprated turbos you could be pushing the lean envelope, should be ok, but better safe than sorry

Can i quote that to my other half when justifying the purchase ;) :D
I thought as much -I guess it\'s a good excuse.
It\'ll just have to sit on my drive for a bit while i save up for the PFC and filters :D
Cheers muchly :)

Again, I\'d recommend the PFC etc anyway, however, I had 99 spec turbos on my FD (before they melted :( ) and they are slightly higher flowing, stronger, better built items...

enjoy.

Just to throw a spanner in, i have two sets of 99 spec turbo\'s and a set of pre 99 spec in my garage at the mo and the stock 99 turbo are virtually identical to the 93 spec Turbo but the other set is of a 99Rz and they are the bigger and Better ones. But that said the Rz Turbo\'s still don\'t have 360 bearings in so are only good upto 1 bar of Boost without Problems, now if you said you have a set of BNR\'s or something like that thats a different ball game.

ECU... Well depends on your Budget, i am personally saving up for one of the New Motec\'s but the PFC is Cheap and does the Job.

I have 99 spec twins on mine and have just remapped to 1.3bar, which is good. Also have 1.3 bar at 2200ish rpm:)

That\'s great guys, cheers for the info.
I have modest power aspirations, so they will do me just fine anyways :) Breathing mods and a new map will do me fine for a good while :)
Better get on Nengun :D
Cheers for the advice :)

When justifying purchases to the wise one always talk Fuel Economy improvements  :)    This always goes down well as not only are you saving money you are saving Polar Bears   ;)

"Hey Honey, these extra injectors will really improve the MPG as they are a lot more efficient"   :p

Seriously though, getting a PFC fitted and mapped will actually improve your fuel economy - so you can use this angle of attack with a clear conscience on this occasion  :)

Unfortuantely, the effect of the \'economy argument\' is somewhat reduced as it will be a weekend car :wack: I tried it before with my last one(car!) and the response was \'well, just use it less\' :D
