Title: Swirl Pots - whose got one fitted - where from etc?
Post by: M@r]{ on November 12, 2007, 02:11:26 PM
I noticed on the Abbeville trackday that once the car got down to about half a tank that I experienced fuel cut     It happened on a particular sequence of tight corners.

I do have an uprated fuel pump - think it is Walbro?  (fitted at WGT as part of a kit)

So i\'m thinking the solution is a Swirl Pot set up.

Where is it best to go to get one?  Can you get them from Demon Tweeks or similar?  Or specialist only?  I would of thought a Swirl pot set up is a Swirl pot set up so does not need to be FD specific?

And how much am I looking at to get it fitted?  Or supplied and fitted?

I know James / Stickers has the same problem so with two already in the market the potential for a group buy could be on the cards

Gurj has one in the Black beastie, it was fitted when he bought it though.

i got mine from reworx mark for around £150

it replaces the stock charcoal canister under the rear of the car and is a direct bolt in replacement.

you\'ll need another inline pump though to feed from the pot aswell as the one in your tank which will be used to fill the swirlpot

are the horizontal mounted swirl pots any good as it could then be mounted in the spare wheel well and sealed in. i assume thats what you ment tony.

or better yet is there an in tank version available anywhere.

im also interested as ive noticed i can get problems when accelerating hard in 2nd with less than 1/2 to 1/3 tank.

I just don\'t like the thought of sharing a cabin with a big tub full of fuel. Particulalry in a shunt.

There are swirl pots that mount on the rear chassis, that are outside of the cabin. These are about the best idea, as you also wont hear the external pump that will be required.

The thought of having any of the fuel system inside the car seems a ludicrous idea, why would you intentionally put yourself it that situation.

Literally 5 minutes ago before I saw this thread I e-mailed this to somebody !

"Glad to see you are keeping the pot under the car as it horrifies me to see fuel bits inside a car with no protection between it and the driver, pull a pipe off an injection pump and see how much fuel it squirts and you would see what I mean".

Nothing wrong with as long as it is boxed in and using the correct type of braided hose - i.e not 200 series hose (which most lines are made of).

You need to use 600 series hose for internal lines.  I have a ATL racing swirl pot with -8 oulet lines and using an aeromotive A1000 fuel pump/filter/regulator setup.

Push on rubber hoses are a definate no go.

The 800 hose is the one that doesn\'t degrade, and so can be run inside the car.  Aston use it in their racing cars as standard.....looks the nuts and the one we will be fitting.  The 600 series is used for brake lines.

Tony and I were discussing this over the weekend, and regardless of what fittings you use....there is no reason to run your fuel cells, swirl pots, pumps, filters or anything else to do with fuel inside the car.  In an accident the swirl pot could quite easily rupture and you now have both 1.5 litres thrown into the car, and an 8bar pump spraying the car with fuel.

The best solution is to have it either all outside of the car, or under a nicely crafted fire wall.......Tony\'s good at these.

Indeed 800 it is - my mistake.... too many late nights I think.

I think it really depends on your car and configuration - my swirl pot is separate by an aluminium firewall from the internal compartment so it\'s no different that being external to the vehicle.

If you read the MSA blue book it pretty much states that any fuel system has to be separated from the driver by a firewall - a good idea.

He who lives by the sword usually dies by it.....he who plays with fire usually gets burnt.

There is no point in treating this like a game....its not!  All it does is bring the sport into problems and get the nimby\'s out in arms.

Its like racing, you don\'t mess with fuel, you have a fire system, electrical cut outs, roll cage, wear fireproof overalls, boots helmet, gloves.  And basically comply with everything the blue book demands.  Its not just yourself you are affecting, its those around you as well.  Even if you take a risk which ends in you dieing in a ball of fire....some poor paramedic has to come and box you up, not very nice for them.

Sorry all,

Something I feel quite passionately about, and as a responsible car club I feel we should present ourselves to the world as such.

I said this a while ago,

When I was racing as a warning we were shown film of a guy dieing in a banger racer at Northhampton,

The tank had ruptured in the car and the whole interior was ablaze, the guy tried to get out of the window but got caught up in his belts and had to get back in the car to free himself, apparently he actually died of a heart attack rather than the burns.

Ross you have told us you only cruise MRC to get your funnys, jollys or whatever, trouble is this one ain\'t funny!

Alright, leave it!

Honestly, I can\'t see anyone interpreting Ross\' comment as advice. Chill out man.

I disagree with you about chilling.  There are too many cars put out on the road with swirl pots mounted in the boot.  This is usually on the pretence that they do it in Japan so thats OK.  Well frankly some of the racing they do in Japan is awfully managed, there are unnecessary deaths due to a lack of care.

This isn\'t funny as Clive points out, but the problem is that there are a lot of implied experts on this forum, and people listen to them.....in some cases rightly but other cases blindly.

Those people who enjoy driving their cars or haven\'t the time to prep their cars and need an expert to do the work trust their judgement...This becomes serious when it is potentially life threatening.

As AtomicRex has said, while it may have been a throwaway comment, it is a very serious issue, any way we can reduce the risk of serious injury or death through fuel fires should be highlighted and pointing out the risks of having fuel systems in the passenger compartment is one way to do this. Yes it may look cool having a swirl pot on show in the boot, but you don\'t look so cool in a burns unit do you? Even if you aren\'t taking the car on the track an it is a styling thing, you get rear-ended and it is one more risk to add to the mix.

Let\'s keep this thread on track shall we? The topic was who has a swirl pot, what do we know about them and where from? Let\'s not allow this to degenerate into irrelevance eh? Mark was asking a valid question and I suspect as he is considerong installing one he needs good advice.

Alright, alright, my point was that both Clive and John had made the point twice already, surely there comes a time when saying it for a third time is just argumentative.

Against the advice given to me from Mark to keep out of it .....

Why, if it is such a serious issue, which I believe it is particularly in the light that Mark will be fitting one at some point, was it necessary for a response to an off the cuff remark be loaded with such sarcasm?

I\'ve seen this before and it starts arguements like this one, puts people on the defensive and makes people feel almost afriad to have their say.

Mark sorry, but people on here always seem to miss the \'catalyst\' comments that cause arguements, and perhaps as an outsider (in terms that I don\'t own an RX7 myself) I see a differing, more balanced perspective as to why arguements are so easily caused??

Hi, Mrs Ross here,
I know its sad that I hang out on a rotary forum, but to be honest I have no life of my own and have to invade my boyfriends man time to keep an eye on him.
Anyway, have you considered that the Only fools and Horses comment was simply another way to look at the problem, and in this nanny state that we live in, were everything seems to be banned because it is \'deemed\' to be dangerous. The quote has some relevance to the swirl pot issue? Or is that beyond your comprehension?
Are they really that dangerous? Think about it for yourself, instead of jumping on the its so dangerous, ban them, ban them!!!
In summary, sorry if my lover has offended you by a different view point, put across using a quote form 80s sitcom.
Mrs Ross.

Ross (or Gertrude when you are wearing the dress ;) ) , no-one said ban them, just choose the right place to put them. Having had a bit of a near death experience yourself recently I\'m assuming you will be using a stronger housing for you tranny on the drag car? That is a safety issue as is the placement of a swirl pot surely?

sorry to go off track but... what are the legalities of having a swirl pot in the boot for road use?  the underside of my car is ram jammed pack full of all sorts and i can fit one under ( pulsar).  but the bugger cuts out on left hand bends.  its driving me mad.
my friend uses one in his boot.  he says it his best mod, uses the standard in tank pump as a lift pump and a walbro in line as the feed pump.  lift pump on standard ignition/relay supply and feed pump on manual switch.

pot cost around £70 off ebay, got his foam filled tank off there quite cheap too.
