Just recently got my car back after fitting a T04R and having it mapped. :InLove
Went out on friday of last week, to take my mate out for a spin, all was going well until.....
It was boosting hard (around 0.7bar, so the tubby was getting into its stride), then all of a sudden the power and boost dropped, my initial thought was an intercooler pipe had popped off, so we limped home, up hills it was struggling to pull any power (no boost either). Got back none of the pipes were lose, apart from one - but it was so hot, I could not take it off!!!
I set off home, then all of a sudden the wastegate opened and ALL of the exhaust gases were passing through the screamer pipe!
Recently I removed the wastegate and hooked it up to a pressurised air source to check and it works spot on, there is no damage to the diagphragm or poppet valve.
Fitted it all back to together and started the car, it runs, but idles rougly, lots of rich smoke comes out of the exhaust (normal on idle, I think) - my mate the observation that one of the lights (as it was dark) was flickering (nearside) - so could it be an electrical fault, or am I just deluding myself?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
try doing the DIY compression test, make sure that you have compression on both rotors. There are lots threads on how to do this, have a search
Darren did you speak to lindop ?
A few more ideas
if its rough then double check all the intercooler pipes are on correctly and couplers sounds like a boost leak somewhere, also check the vacuum hose to the MAP sensor is on correctly and is not split.
Arse. just done the champagne test, its boogered, it failed it miserably!
Started it, bubbles began to rise in the coolant in the filler cap. That would explain the sudden opening of the wastegate as the water would become a vapour and push very hard against the poppet valve.
Arse.
does it **** water out after a drive? Are you topping water up? Hard to start in the morning? Has it been bled after turbo change as u could have air escaping out of the system, hence positive champagne test?
Does it push water out when cold? usually if the Pipes go hard as soon as you start the car from cold (with the caps on) its goosed.
Guess the new turbo setup was just too much for it Daz. You\'ll be looking forward to a busy winter now.
Kevin
gutted for you Darren after all that hard work
Hi guys thanks for the kind words, yes the pipes go hard, water is missing, the water has little bits of oil in it and some black stuff. It smells of combustion (technical nose - I am a chemist!).
Pah it looks like a rebuild, although a Hayward engine looks good with such a favourable warranty!
Whatever the work needed I will do the spannering and let the guys at Lindop set it up!
Getting a workshop made at home with a nice car port next to it for working on the car, will have a kettle, tv, etc. For anyone who wants to come and help!
Thanks
TBH I might consider breaking it up, as there are a lot of high quality parts, and I am a bit skint at the moment.
Well, if you have a set of 1600\'s, then consider me for first dibs please! :D
(Sorry for your issues! :p)
I have a very comprehensive fuel system, KG Parts Extreme, that I would be selling if I do break it!
Thanks
Well if your writing it off, sombody has recently has had a good experiance using sealup. Guess it all depends on how badly its drinking water

Gutted for you Daz :(
how many miles on the engine?
50,000 kash, was wanting my car to look as nice as yours! Next job was a respray! Perhaps not now. Dont know what to do!

dont break it
keep it, just leave it for the winter and then in the summer get it fixed or whenever you can
you always have the option of rebuilding it yourself or if you strip the engine out it will cost you less for the rebuild
i say keep it :yes
Darren
dont give up you have done too much yourself & spent a lot getting it to this point. Not that i am mechanicaly minded but if i can help give me a shout
i agree dont break it... get another engine in there or have it rebuilt and enjoy it...youve put too much time and hassle into getting it where it is, it wouldnt seem right to break her!
Thanks guys! Would like the Hayward ported engine, but dont know what to do!
Bad luck matey,
QuoteWould like the Hayward ported engine,
i\'m with you on that one! if i was in your position now. that is what i would go for, it would add value to the car, you would have peace of mind, and enjoy your car again! perhaps there is some value in your old engine to put towards it? i think if you broke the car you would always regret it! and all that time spent taking it apart, weeks!! depressing! you would be best off keeping it,
Good luck Bob
theres 3 FD lumps on the bay atm... one needs a rebuild but theres 2 others...
you could either buy the blown one and rebuild it or buy one of the other 2 and sell your blown one?

Thanks for the compliment dude..... :3gears-rh about what you should do next, I agree with everyone else... don\'t break it! you will never get back what you put into it. It\'s far better to get her back up and running and enjoy her to the full as she is setup to be a monster :yes . You don\'t have to rush into getting her fixed asap, take your time and work on it slowly... winter\'s here anyway and there are no shows etc.. so try and get her ready for the summer... :cheers
QuoteDont know what to do!
I am currently rebuilding a 13b with extended street port if you are interested.
Your other option is to take your motor out and take a look inside. You have got nothing to lose.
What are your thoughts?
rob
Wow thanks for all your kind words and taking the time to give me your comments!
I wanted to get it resprayed as it would look ace.
Agree about the Hayward Rotary engine, adding value! Trouble is with these cars is they stopped making them and they are such a timeless classic.
Oh for goodness sake!
Give Carl a ring Daz. Pull the lump yourself to save some cash there\'s plenty of us up this way now to help out.
Kevin
I was in the same situation when my motor let go, at the time I wanted to cut my losses and break it but I stuck at it and rebuilt it.
I would take another rebuild on if you were interested?
If I keep it I will pull the engine and get a hayward, TBH I just want it sorted one way or another!
Thanks for the offer Bobert, if I am putting out a large outlay I need a gaurantee to keep the girlfriend happy!
Appreciate the offer and the lower cost, but it would be a large investment!
Thanks
Cheque on its way for Carl for a new ported engine, hooray! :mmmm
Credit card -
:Grrr
Darren glad you are not breaking plus you get Carl\'s warranty
Thanks for the kind words, pete. Hopefully will have the engine next week!
those big ports will spool that tub niceley. what hot side have you got on it.
matt
Dont know Matt, will let you know when I pull it off (and the turbo will be removed as well!) :Giggle
When I get the new engine, feel free to pop over! :bandit
Or any other time that is..........
