Hi there,
I just bought my first RX7, a 92 efini twin turbo type R. I\'m extremely pleased with it. It needs a little cleaning up to bring it up to scratch but mechanically it seems sound. I have only faced one problem which I assume others also have faced (and hopefully conquered). The steering wheel is 300mm across and hits my legs continuously (I am 6\' 1") meaning my legs can only rest in one position. Has anyone found any nice looking button steering wheels (hopefully as little as 250mm??) or is there another way to counter this little problem?
P.S. Can anyone recommend an RX7 spares company where I can pick up a glove box handle.
cheers!:D
The UK cars, which dont have rear seats, allow the driver and passenger seat to slide further back than the Jap ones. You can modify the seat / rail to allow this.
For spare parts try this places:
//www.jimmys.co.uk
//www.rxmotors.co.uk
//www.dragonperformace.co.uk
//www.reworx.com
There are a few others but cant think of the top of my head right now.
As for your wheel, I thought the wheel was originally 350mm and if you bought a 320mm that should just about sort it or try for a 300mm wheel. I have the same problems as do many others.
The seats do go back quite a way but its the height I dont seem to be able to adjust - without buying new lower rails at least. I thought maybe buying a boss-off kit would bring the wheel slightly closer and away from my knees. I will continue to look for a smaller steering wheel.
Thanks for the links. Whilst I think about it, does anyone have any trick methods of removing old bubbled window tints without scratching the glass?
cheers again
guna say i fort the originals were bigger than 300mm, where are you measuring from? I similarly was gutted when i first went for a play in one with standard wheel :( & have the description of how to modify yer runners to get a few more inches UK stylee but so far haven\'t bothered as mine has a smaller momo un which i guess is circa 300+mm, will measure it later, but is far smaller than that which i tried before & while it is still a bit of a squeeze it is more than bearable.
Other plan i had was a steering wheels spacer, i was looking at adjustable variety off demontweeks, as this would raise the wheel slightly although given yer pretty close to wheel anyway think i\'ll go for the seats further back first if it does get to me oh & i was eyeing up a 280mm momo wheels but as i say mine is quite suitable as is. 250mm sounds stupidly small so i\'m guessing yer measuring the inside space bit? :confused:
Si (6"1 with lanky legs :D)
thanks Si,
I think 250mm is a stupidly small, its just its slightly safer being able to turn the wheel, however small, as opposed to having its squared off bottom catch your legs as you turn into a corner (and away from a hedge! ;). I think the wheel I have is aftermarket? Its black rubber gripped with a green logo in the centre and a flat base. I catch my fingers on the indicators every time I turn it! Thats the other problem I was aiming to cure with a Boss off kit to bring the wheel out an inch or so.
Which 280mm wheel from Momo have you seen?
cheers for all your help guys
How about one of the D shaped wheels, flat at the bottom.
Id never drive with a D Shaped wheel. I can just imagine its a nightmare if you need to apply opposite lock.
I normally let go of the steering wheel when it goes sideways and then catch it, and with a D thats just not going to be possible.

well the bits i was looking at were on demon tweeks as per
:
adjustable wheel spacer (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/catalogue/product_detail.asp?PCODE=OMPODC022141&GRP=RP025&PGRP=R002&CLS=ROAD&code=OMPAWS&from=search) which while more £ than just a plain spacer looked a good plan incase i went too far & couldn\'t reach wipers etc :eek: ie can play with best spacing lol, & an eg of 280mm wheel: here (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/catalogue/product_detail.asp?PCODE=MOMM11102632812&GRP=RP024&PGRP=R002&CLS=ROAD&code=MOMM111026&from=search)
but as i say haven\'t resorted to those yet it aint as bad as i first thought although it is still very different from almost being able to heel-toe in the scoob & getting knees right under wheel no probs.
I\'ll letcha no how it goes when i\'m practising opposite lock round Bruntingthorpe soon............
In relation to moving the seats themselves back here\'s how it was described to me by Henning off FDUK who has done it:
QuoteUnbolt rails from car (seats still attached)
Remove rails from seats
Drill out all the rivets, steel bungs and dents from rails (about 8 per rail, 2 rails per seat)
Take rail apart, clean all the cage bearings and get rid of all the drill shavings
Weld extra seams onto rails
Reassmeble rail (takes about 6 tries to get the bearings in the right place)
Bolt rails back to seat
Bolt seats back into car
Repeat for passenger seat? I did the passenger seat first to see if I could do it and if it would work.
I did also inquire off Mazda how much a set of UK seat rails would costs but er it was in the hundreds so figured the above was easier although the first people i went to see who i was going to pay to do it weren\'t very helpful [Si resists naming & shaming yet but i will bytch later on when resolved] & even said oh is this one of those internet experts while giving the hmm could cost a lot with no guarantee type faces so gave that a miss with them....
Anyway that\'s about all folks off the top of me head :D

I have a D-Shaped wheel at the moment. Its 350mm across and the corners of the flat edge that hit my knees are the biggest problem. I think a 300mm cylindrical wheel would probably be ok, but I\'m sure a 280mm would be great. I dont really want to start welding etc. or purchase new rails at expense. My last car (a highly tuned Calibra - which Im selling if anyones interested! ;) cost me well over £12,000 in mods alone, and I dont want to go down that street again if I can help it. Although I probably will end up spending just as much if not more on the RX.
So I\'m looking for a snap off BOSS kit, hopefully an inexpensive one. Does anyone have any suggestions?
cheers people
Just out of interest, what size steering wheels do you guys run with? There isnt much to choose from within the 300mm range s Ive seen, and hardly any at 280mm.
cheers everyone
i\'ll get me tool out, so to speak, next time i\'m in car which hasn\'t been lately :(
Si (+tool

lol)
