Title: side skirt fitting? (help needed)
Post by: leeincivic on November 06, 2007, 09:17:15 PM
eh up peeps! finally decided to get off me ass and sort me car out!!

av got a set or c-west copy side skirts which look like a very good fitment but one thing i am stumped on is that the skirt is made to sit on the sills between the door and sill, this is a problem coz when the door is shut the door gap is no longer there????

this will become a major problem when i paint the car soon as obviously its all gonna chip and look a mess!! plus it will just look stupid with a really tight gap!

i spoke to a local bodyshop and he just said that he would bash feck out of the sills to make the skirts sit lower into the door opening!! i aint into that route tho for obvious reasons!! lol

has anyone any ideas or even if they have had a bodyshop fit some post some pics up of them fitted to give me an idea,

i would not mind keeping them to give a bit better support but if cutting them off is the only way then so be it,:Laugh

cheers dudes!!

Was only just talking to a bodyshop guy about this.

His reccomendation was to have nothing going on the sill at all to keep the panel gap\'s true and even.  I can only guess the skirt would be rivited underneath and the rest would be bonded.  Then you would fill the join line from the sideskirt to sill so you couldn\'t see it when it\'s painted.

And deffinately no big hammer to the sills for god sake, that\'s just a bodge job!

yeah thats a good point about keeping the original gap, guess it would be hard to try and match that to the skirts profile,

looks like its out with the saw then!! lol:Laugh

and yeah the hammer to car approach is not what i was looking to hear!!! lol

cheers for that ricco and it does seem to be the best option really:Thumbs-up

also do you have any idea what is best used to bond them on? i was thinkin about using the sealant which is used to bond in the windscreen, i used this stuff to bond some patches in when me car went bare arsed, it seemed very strong,

or is there a better option for use on the fibreglass skirts?

Good question! Honest answer is I dunno! :spank

I have seen some companies use \'Elch\' which I believe is a company which makes adhesives etc, which one to use I dont know.  Sure someone on here would know.  You could always try contacting another bodyshop and see what they advise?

Title: grinder
Post by: Eddie on November 06, 2007, 11:35:47 PM
LOL only joking about the grinder part:)

Think I am going to cut them in two following the line between the door and the front wing and take the full front wing off with that part of the skirt attached. Then patch them back up, dont fancy doing it but needs doing and I think trying to remove the sikaflex stuff is going to be a real pain.

loads to do an no time to do it, got that zaust on now I got of you by the way boy its loud but sounds bloody good:)

Well happy with it I like it loud, its much louder than my super dragger.

My neighbor over the road saw me at a fireworks display and told me to watch out for this wife catching me, apparently when I start my car up the front room window pole end things unscrew:) and drop off.
This guys has a siera cosworth and thought that was loud:) one day he says your car shakes my full front room window and stuff unscrews and things start to vibrate when the rx7 is left running over the road, I smile and tell him his cosworth rattles my letter box:) a little, he didn\'t look amused:) telling me its over 400hp but never seems to want to play when I see him around in it funny that:)

when you going to any meets need to get you a beer for the good price you gave me on it.

Cheers

yeah i am hopefully gonna try and get down to the mascrat meet next monday so may see ya round then, i doubt very much i will be in my car coz am gonna have a go at the skirts over this weekend so will prob end up takin a month!! lol

right now the update:

i spoke to a respectable bodyshop and they told me to use tiger seal, they use it to attach their bodykits and swear by it,  i managed to get some today so will be tackling this at the weekend, any ideas on best way to prep for this stuff, obvioulsy rub down both areas and have them clean but anything else to help me?

also i sprayed 2 areas on each side of the car black so that the red of the body will not be visible through the vents, manged it last night in the freezing cold with gale force winds, just glad it does not have to be spot on really coz i know it was a rush job coz it started rainin:Hammer i know i know the 3 fundamental rules of painting were not in force!!:rollin  lol

will post pics of progress tomoz:p

tiger bond is ok stuff sikaflex 255 (there is lots of difrent types) is best ive ever used.
once s/s is prepd mask of the area the s/s will be bonded to on the car and rub paint with emery cloth to get a key. clean the bit you just rubbed with pannel wipe and the s/s ,  put windscreen primer on both s/s and bit on car, once its dry bond it on. dont leav it to late as the primer goes off fast.
stick a couple of self tapping bolts threw botom of sill if theres a reces for the jacking point on side skirt do it here.

ive put probly 100 side skirts on this way and even after crashing thats the only bit left on,
