Title: 18\'s or 19\'s I can\'t decide?!? Help!!
Post by: leeroy_25 on October 25, 2007, 09:22:51 PM
Hi Guys\',
I am struggling to decide whether to go for 18" rims or 19" rims on my burnout kitted RX7.. I have seen a couple of standard cars with 19 and I am almost starting to think they look too big. Most FD\'s I see seem to have 17\'s or 18\'s.. What do you all reckon? shall I go for the big ones?! If any of you have pictures of car\'s with 19" rims please post them.. I have litterally only seen a couple..

Thank you
Lee

I think 19s look to big...18s look spot on, but not so sure about the handling.
I looked at a burnout rx, lowered, with 18s multispokes....looked awesome...from a distance :)

okay?! What was up with it close up?!

My thoughts were I think the 19s really are for show.. 18\'s will give better handling I think although I am not sure why? I presume to do with a bit more rubber to be forgiving? 18" rubber is cheaper! more rim less rub could look better. Maybe a lot depends on rim style? deep dish is the only way for me!

Any other thoughts?

It wasnt a good spray job, and general finishing, edges etc

I read a thread on here about wheel sizes, it generally with 16s and 17s there plenty of tyre wall, for give round corners, but 18s/19s you have significantly less tyre wall.
Saying that, my friend has 18s on his rx, reckons he didnt notice much difference.
Now this looks good....maybe a little big?

Mate the car looks lovey.. But don\'t get me wrong.. This was the one I saw that started me wondering if the 19\'s were too big..! It\'s definately on the verge? What does it handle like or do you use it mainly for show\'s? Like I said earlier.. 19\'s on a show car are great! the bigger the better! With mine I want something that handles and looks good and doesn\'t rub my arches! So I am a little hesitant o the 19\'s. Do you get any arch rub? inner arches I mean? the washer bottle I noticed is in a silly position for that! What offset are you running and tyre size?
I also have a black car.. I was going to respray it candy red but for now it\'s going to get a fresh coat of black and a heavy dose of clear lacquer! As well as size I am torn between chrome rims and hpyer silver with a polished lip?! Oh the choices!! Here is my selection I am picking from at the moment..

Rim1
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t59/Leeroy_25/Sportmax1.jpg)
Rim2
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t59/Leeroy_25/Rpmrim1.jpg)
Rim3
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t59/Leeroy_25/SternRim.jpg)
Rim4
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t59/Leeroy_25/508Rim.jpg)
Rim5
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t59/Leeroy_25/505rim.jpg)

Votes please.. The black rims I am trying to find in chrome or silver! I had got down to two rims yesterday! Now I just can\'t choose.. any other suggestions I am pretty open!

RX handles fine on the road with them on and there is no rub on the arches :Laugh

I had a rx with 17\'s and 18\'s and now the 19\'s and on the road they are no different, although i dont do track days or drag strips so cant comment on that side of things :King

Larger rims are ok if they are light enough, if you want handling go for 18\'s from a lightweight stable...volk racing , ssr, etc etc

General consensus is 17\'s best for performance, 18\'s best compromise, 19\'s best look. Any bigger looks stupid.

I moved from heavy 18\'s to light 19\'s and didn\'t notice a difference. If you have adjustable suspension, you can alter it to cope with the difference in ride quality. Personally, 19\'s every time, but I think it makes a big difference if you go all silver/alloy, or a polished rim with different coloured centre. All alloy makes it look somehow a bit weighty/bulky, but mix it up with a gunmetal/black/gold/whatever centre and it balances out somewhat.

Thank you for the feedback so far chaps.. A real mix of opinions! Love the look of the equip rims.. How much!!?

does seem like.. Keep the votes coming in and I will see what if I can find anything else to add!!

regarding colour.. only thing with mixing is I don\'t think there is much option on a black car.. personally I would never have a black rim. gunmetal looks a little dull! I used to like gold/bronze but don\'t think it really goes with black.. a bit too sickly.. so I am left with Hyper black, Hyper silver or all polished/chrome.

I have 19s lowered on tein springs and its almost undrivable as the wheels are rubbing like made on the inner arch lining at the front, will have to change to a standard spring i think. I\'m running an 8" rim offset ET35 with 235/35/19 tyres

Well That is worth knowing! I would be running around 25-30offset I think as I have a wide arch kit, so may get a bit extra clearance but that is what I was thinking might happen.. I notice the rims look a little inset under the arch? could you not put some spacers on to bring them out a bit?

Interesting, I was running 19x8.5 front, 19x9.5 rear both on ET38, with TEIN coilovers and there was absolutely zero rubbing. I\'ve also got a Burnout now :), so have gone a little more extreme...

Personally, if I had a black car, I would go black centres, polished deep dish rims.

Post by: deanflowers on October 26, 2007, 03:04:48 PM
Mines hitting the front of the arch liners not the arches themselves so changing the offset isnt going to really help me i dont think, Its fine on a smooth road but rubs at the slightest bump, maybe coilovers would solve the problem making it stiffer. Aftermarket springs aint helping me is my thoughts.

I spent ages looking at diffrent wheel sizes to go with my chargespeed arches, and i think 18\'\' is perfect for the rx7, 19\'\' seem better suited to bigger cars like supra\'s, had 17\'\' before and they looked good too..... will send you some pics later.

Hmm. Do you have any rubbing issues.. It\'s funny how the style of wheel makes them look so different.. I would alos say they look small on that pictures!! Is the car lowered or on standard suspension?

No rubbing issues, bcoz the arches have been rolled. Not standard rx suspension, but RZ springs with bilstein shocks..

Ok then guys,

Now what do you reckon.. I think the black and polished rims are 19\'s?? where as the others are 18\'s? If anyone knows differently please let me know.. I think the first is the nuts! Any one know what the bodykits is. looks very similar to my burnout kit but the edges of the wings are not quite right? maybe it\'s been modded or it\'s a DIY arch flare?? Chargespeed kit is similar too but I thought they all had big vents in the front wings??

As above they are Meister S1\'s - the bottom ones are the three piece and the other ones the two piece - the two piece ones don\'t have the bolts visible.
Absolutely awesome wheels, and what i shall be getting for my FD - they look even better in the flesh.
Also look at something like the SSR PRofessors - very similar style but slimmer spokes, and the spokes go further towards the edge of the rim, so the wheel looks slightly large.

I personally prefer a smaller wheel with big dish, and a healthy stretch, but that\'s just the old skool part of me talking :D

Post by: leeroy_25 on October 29, 2007, 01:31:41 PM
Well.. The burnout car is my desktop!! my motivation!! not sure that I would like two different wheel sizes in reality thought..  As for wheels.. Works ones are awesome.. would love to pick up a second hand set for sensible money!
It\'s all about the dish for me!! and I do like the stretched look within reason.. size.. will that is the current problem!! about right!! but I just can\'t figure what \'about right\' is!!? One minute I think 19 for sure the next 18!

I have some SSR Evolutions on my GTR so I might try and squeeze one on to see what the 18\'s look like! not really a fair test as they are the wong offset and wrong colour but hey.. maybe it will give me an idea?!

I have 18\'s x10 +25 all round. rear spacer needs deciding.

Sometimes I think the 19" version of Advan in chrome would be better for show bling, But I am not planning on making a show car.

Just one that drives very well.

Australia... haha No looks unless they are 20.... hahaha
Dont be influenced.... Most drag in a stright line down under.

Don\'t run 255\'s on 11 inch rims either. they Look good, but you have to run stupid pressure to stop them curbing.

Go the 18s , better rubber choice available too.

19" pics in this thread..http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35770

looking good on 18\'s!

You really got 10" wide all around?? I was gonna run 9.5 rear and 8.5 front.. maybe running 255 instead of 265 on the rears and 215 instead of 225 to get a little bit of stretch.. nothing mad though!! However a lot of the 18\'s I am finding are coming in an 8" / 9" stagger which is a bummer!

I used to run 225/255 on my old car on Rays 8.5 / 9.5

This one has 10" with 255 Neova all round. for circuit and rotation capability.
Same as Feed cars but the rear spacer suggestion they gave was a bit wide at 25mm. I will resize to about 10mm.

The front is very tight with this offset though. I am in the process of replacing the guard inners.

Amemiya Cars
Run F 8.5 and R 9.5 +20 or +18 on their widebody Which would be a good guide also.

Ok,
the Plain Silver Feed car has 19 with huge brakes.
The Stickered Feed Touge car has 18 and runs very well.
The red car has 19"  Normal brakes
The Brown Car has oversize 19 - way too wide but look cool.

New Feed Afflux run 19x9 +25 235/35/19 & 19x10 +25 255/30/19
Would be better at the front than my car.

Now the size is agreed I just need to make a final choice! No way can I afford a set of Works rims new sadly.. probably would be lucky to get them secondhand as well! I knew where there were some Mania Racing vortex rims recently (19\'s) they are shown on the supra in the link above if you got to the silver rim collection and mania. They look pretty nice but the front rim only has a 1/2" dish which I don\'t feel is enough.. min has to be 2" I think? and
3"+ at the rear.

I will find something eventually.. For me though the rims can make or break a car.. so I don\'t just want to get any old thing cos it fits!

Thanks DMdrifting for your confidence in my taste! We will just have to see! Have you seen my project post? Think it\'s actually in the gallery section!

Depends what you\'re using it for buddy... I use mine every day :)

I\'ve had 17 / 18 / 19 on mine and all I\'ll say is if you want to drive it hard on anything other than pure silk 19\'s would be a mistake. British roads are too rough for a low riding FD on 19\'s IMO which is why i switched back to 18s and the difference is huge. The car is much more planted and far less crashy, making me feel much more confident through the twisties. Bottom line my car\'s a lot better at going round corners on 18s and the overall ride comfort is much better too. So my advice don\'t go bigger than 18, spend the extra pennies on fuel / nice rubber!

Also once you get it nice and low the 18\'s look plenty big enough :)

Anyway here\'s mine...

18\'s all the way, have driven with 17\'s, 18\'s and 19\'s. If you enjoy spirited driving you will notice a difference bewteen 18\'s and 19\'s, the 19\'s just dont feel right, its difficult to explain, stick with 18\'s.

Front 9.5" with +18 offset
Rears 11" with +18 offset

Please let me know.. Maybe I have found some rims.. although not too sure about them yet! Tyres on them are big time stretched! 225 fronts and 265 rears..

OKay.. Not really sure if I have made much progress or not!! Firstly I am waiting on prices back for a couple of the rims below which could determine whether I get them or not.. Also as lip depth is a big factor the vortex rims only have a 1" front lip which I would realy like more.. anyway. have a look guys and let me know what you think. My preference is the D-Spec Crimson rims if I can get a god price.. then the Sportmax, Katana and Stern rim I am tied between. All as 18\'s of course!

D-Spec

Sportmax of which I cannot decide between Hyper black or Hyper silver spokes!?

It\'s so hard to tell without seeing rims on a car and knowing what they look like form different angles!
In my opinion the D-specs look the nuts but I reckon they will be too pricey.. My taste is normally way above my pay packet! Then I guess the closest rim is the Sportmax.

Let me know what you lot think! Maybe someone already has a set of the above on there FD? Please post pics if so!

Cheers

Right, Firstly here is a better picture of the Vortex Rim.. Beer in mind this is the rear deep lip version.

Now here is a picture of these on a Supra. These are 19" version so look more impressive naturally.

And finally here is a pic of the Stern rims on a 350Z.. I think these look real small for 18\'s but then everything seems to look small on the 350Z! The Arches are too bg or something?!

1st ones are gorgeous!

But all a bit flashy if you get what i mean! FD\'s look great on tough, dark,  race rims! But then they look awesome on big flash rims too!

Choice is which way you want the car to look like?

Well I want it to look amazing!! A show car with a racey edge. Like I have the wide arch kit and RE-A AD9 bonnet.. rear end I am a bit stuck on at the moment till I get it back together a bit but I have an RE-A Low wing for now but maybe I might need to go bigger (but not too big!) like a 99 spec style or Mazdaspeed? Thinking about some spats or a wider bumper but I don\'t want to spoil the nice natural lines.
The Burnout Demo Car looks awesome but a bit impractical and too much show car. I want a show car I can drive!
Hope that gets a rough picture!?

M.. GT-II are pretty similar to the sportmax.. but no Hyper silver
Hikari again nice but no hyper silver or hyper black. Had toyed with gold but I think it will look to sickly.. I think that is why I stopped looking in the end as I def don\'t want black or gunmetal as it will look dull on a black car in my opinion..
The new speedstars are not bad! And the nurburgrings..

Hmm.. I might make some enquireies about the finishes available.

Thanks

Can someone possibly PM the guy from shine auto and direct him here for some advice on rims!!
I spoke to a company about wheels today to suit my burnout kit and said I am looking for something like 25-30 offst to play safe and then I will play with spacers and he guy said. No, No, no.. you need +6 offset rims.. 3 piece... 10" rears and 9" fronts.. going to set you back about £2650 for wheels and tyres and we recommend the traffic star?! Well a little more than I had hope to spend on rims (althogh nice rims I am sure!) and also I am not quite convinced of the offset/size he suggest! I know the burnout demo car is supposed to have +6\'s on it but the camber is ridiculous! Anyway. This is one thing I do not want to get wrong and have been seeking lots of adivce on for ages! In my opinion the wheels can make or break the car. it\'s te icing on the cake so to speak!

Quote from: craigrI moved from heavy 18\'s to light 19\'s and didn\'t notice a difference.

I agree with this, I have blitz Z1 Tecno\'s with gold centres and they look great, more to the point they are still great on track but the tyres are NOT cheap, my Eagle F1 rears (285-30-19) are £280 each, but they have lasted 3 years with 5 track sessions.

The offset you need depends totally on the wheel width dude - an 8 with an ET35 will sit an inch further in than a 10 with an et35, for instance.

If someone just says to you \'you need something with an ET30\' with no mention of wheel width or tyre size, i\'d take the rest of their advice with a pinch of salt ;)

And FWIW, I\'d tend to shy away from Wheelmania wheels, as they tend to be more show than performance orientated, and hence tend to be pretty weighty.

I would try and seek some advise from guys who already have the kit and see what offsets and widths they are using.

I agree, my blitz wheels are 10" rear with 45 offset.

Just to confirm I had put the inof in my previous text.. the guy was recomment a +6 offset on 10" rears and 9" fronts!

I am thinking about 9.5" rears and 8.5" fronts with 25ish offset then if need be experimenting with spacers.. Also plan to run a bit of stretch no the tyres to aid with clearance. 215/40 fronts and 255/35 rears.

Cheers

215 is a bit thin.

I used to run 225 with 8.5 + 40 and 255 with 9.5 +38 20mm spacer
had no problems. Fronts needed to be 10mm wider though. car was low. so under size was good.

Now I have 18x10 +25 with 255 all round. Rear has 25mm spacer but too wide. I\'m going to try different spacers on the rear this weekend. 10mm less would be good.

Probably wouldn\'t recommend the 10\'s on the front though, a little bit of customising required so not really an off the rack fitment

I tried these on my first car in the build stage, way too big.
TE37 18x8.5 +15 245 and 18x9.5 +15 275

They were from a Supra ... massive.

Some nice bits of kit!! Are al these car\'s you have owned or do you run a workshop or something!?
Anyway, by 215 being a bit thin I presume you mean too thin as a general size for an FD and not too stretched on a 8.5" rim? surely a 225 will have no real stretch on the 8.5" rim and a 255 tyre on a 9.5" rim will create a little stretch? The other option is 10" rears and 9" fronts with maybe 225 front tyres and 265 rears? But then it\'s finding the rims!
Did you have 20mm spacers both front and rear when yo had the +40 and +38offset rims? I presume this is all on a wide body car we are talking? What\'s the extra width of the kit compared to a standard body?

Yes,
Project 1
my silver FD became Bronze. RE-Amemiya Wide body

Project II
My Black FD became Forest Green. Feed Wide body

In answer.
225 had a little stretch on 8.5
255 had a little stretch on 9.5.

But it depends on the tyre. they were Dunlop Le Mans and Stretched quite a bit..

Currently. my 255 Advan Neova dont stretch at all on 10"
Very flat side wall.

You need to check the actual tread width. Some manufacturers list it. Some dont. Differs by more than a few mm sometimes.
