Title: RX-3 restoration
Post by: Ray on October 20, 2007, 10:46:41 PM
New project for the winter is to bring this RX-3 back to life.
I intend to keep the running gear standard (maybe carb and header), but am  undecided about the bodywork, whether to go for standard or try to do a Mazda sports kit copy, see final picture.
Opinions and suggestions welcomed :cool

Looking good Ray.
Go with the sports kit and a 13b PP!
You know it makes sense.

The 13b PP is for the RX-4 :mmmm

I\'m staying real old skool, and putting the 10a back in the RX-3, hopefully it should be OK with just the rotten core plug changed.

I\'ve cleaned all the rubbish out this afternoon and had the seats out, the trim is in pretty good nick and the floorpan looks great, so hopefully shouldn\'t be too big a project. I don\'t want to be too fussy, just enough so that it looks half decent and is actually a quite usable car.

I\'ll try and post images as I go along (if I don\'t nag me :Laugh )

Keep it original if you\'ve got the bumpers, otherwise stick on the sports kit.

Hello Ray,

From memory I seem to remember Dad saying he had an RX-3 modified by the U/K dealer from new, with 4 pots, stripes and other non standard mods, how about copying that car (gotta keep it yellow though:mmmm )

Hi Stu,

The red car is my dads, (as Clive mentioned). I did a bit of welding on it last week, just one more patch needed now around the idler gear, so should be ready hopefully later this year.

As Clive said, it\'s an interesting car. A dealer decided to modify an RX-3 as a marketing ploy for an alternative to Escort RS2000/Avenger Tiger/Droopsnoot Firenza. So it has got 4 pot calipers, LSD, buckets seats, slightly flared arches (not like the sports kit, just subtle), 13b RX-4 engine, 5 speed box and minilite wheels.

So we\'ve got a bit of challenge on now to see which car gets finished first...

Oh, and mine is definitely staying yellow :p

Great thing about the floors on the RX3 is that Mazda galvanised them.
Looks like a pretty good car really Ray.

This might be useful for you Ray.
Pic is out of focus but clear enough for you to see what is needed,I realised that all of mine are in cars except for FD ones which are quite different,so this is from the Mazdatrix catalogue.

My Dad had a yellow RX-3 when we lived in Florida back in 1980...
remember hooning down the roads next to the orange groves  ( he was in the citrus industry )

The roof (cloth?) eventually started to peel away & he pulled it all off... he sold it \'1982\' in full running order for $300 as it looked a state and \'mom\' wasn\'t having it in the drive anymore...

wish I had it now, eh.
