Title: Simultaneous Twin Turbos
Post by: MadMarch on February 14, 2004, 08:17:34 PM
Is there a step by step account of setting your twins up to run simultaneously?
What do you need, equipment/ parts?
Is it worth doing or do I need rescuing from early mental illness?????

Thanks,

Andy,

Moved your thread to engine tech sections.  If theres a good answer, then I will move it back to FAQ at that time.

Cheers

There are a couple of step-by-step guides on-line, will have a search on the US forum if my internet connection gets up to a useable speed

There are a couple of different ways of doing it - cheap, quick and nasty one and the permanent proper one.

Unless you have serious boost issues it is not normally recommended on the ground you get all the lag of a reasonable single but without the large power gains.  Not something I\'d do with the stockers myself, but was planning on going that way with upgraded twins.

Here\'s (http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/non-sequential.html) the website that has details on the conversion.

It also has a hell of a lot of good information on the site.

hi buddy, had the link on my favourites.

was thinking about doing it to mine. but heard reports about it working fine all the lag  of a single but without the kick..  im saving for a nice big single hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  for my rz

DRAGON does this conversion for a very resonable fee

Thanks Guys, plenty to read.

Out of interest, how much would a single turbo kit cost (I like doin\' stuff myself) with a reasonable power gain. Nothing crazy, maybe an increase of 80 horses.

Andy.

...you could get an extra 80 horses without going single turbo, for a fraction of the cost. There\'s really no need to go single until you\'re pushing more than 350 horses, and even then people have got as much as 400rwhp on the stock twins.

The single turbo kit alone would probably set you back... maybe £4k at a rough guess, less if you do the work yourself. Trouble is, that\'s just the turbo itself, you need all the fuel mods, IC, uprated rad, ECU, blah blah blah. If you only want 80 more HP, then stick with the twins. Not only will it be cheaper, but you\'ll also have lower lag, which should make it better for street use (I\'m sure some single-turbo guys will disagree with me, though :) )

How much are uprated 2nd hand twins?  Also it it alot of work to change?

Changing turbos is a time consuming process, so consequently not cheap.  Uprated twins in the UK are a bit thin on the ground, so close to non-existent on the second hand market.  Cost wise I\'d bargained on about 2k to take mine out, ship them to BNR, get them to upgrade them, ship back and re-install.  As highlighted by others, this is just the turbos and you have to have appropriate other mods (many more pennies) to take advantage on them.

StreetPizza, no-one in the UK has got anywhere near 400rwhp from the twins, John made 316 with a street ported motor, FMIC, etc. and his is the highest over here.  I\'d love to get a US 400rwhp car over here and stick it on my local rollers :D  I\'d be surprised if it made over 400 fly.

Haha, fair enough. I should really spend less time on the Yankee forums. They do have a way of exaggerating things. :D

As for the uprated twins, yeah, I think BNR are the usual weapons of choice. They do a few levels of upgrades, see here:

I think I remember something about a stage 4 as well, but that may not have hit the shelves yet, or I may have imagined it :)

Not picking on you mate, honest ;) but BNR no longer do a range.  They do a straight stock replacement; these have completely new internals to a similar spec to the stockers and a new upgraded set of twins - these will be similar in output to the old stage 3s, so capable of 18-20psi and reasonable spool up.

...damn you, that\'s the last time I try to be informative! :rollin But seriously though, if they don\'t do a range, why are they still advertised? (as per the link I posted) I honestly hadn\'t heard anything about that...

Eh, I\'m learning, I guess.

To the best of my knowledge the new spec ones aren\'t officially in production yet, so (I\'m guessing) rather than take the old ones out of the public gaze and leave a hole it makes sense to leave them there and if anyone enquires about them BNR can explain the situation and probably sell one of the new options.

Alternatively web sites do have a tendancy to drift behind the times, and it may be they just haven\'t updated the page yet - other sites no longer list them.

I only know about it as I was e-mailing Bryan at BNR before Christmas about getting mine done.

So, how do you get from stock to +80hp then?
My car is a totally standard \'92 type X, if that makes any difference.....and if I can, I want to do the work (kit car is done and I\'m getting itchy fingers).
Cheers, Andy
