Title: twin or single turbo for everyday driver.
Post by: MintyFresh on February 14, 2004, 01:46:00 PM
the RX i get is going to be my daily driver, are single turbo cars suited to this?

do u lose a lot of initial acceleration with a single turbo?  i.e. does the 0-60 time decrease?

Thanks

Ive only been in two single turbo cars, and I cant say im a fan myself.  Its a totally different feeling.  Maybe it would be different if I drove one.

Thing that concerns me, as I dont think anyone has got an engine with a single turbo to last very long.  Hopefully someone with a big single will come on here and say its been going for ages.

I would have thought a single turbo may kick in later in the rev range than the twins, but that just means you set the revs higher and gear change timing a little different.  If anything the 0-60 should be better if you have the traction.  But I have no experience with single turbo rx\'s, just going by past experience of turbo cars.  Bigger turbo power rating i.e. more than stock twins should have more of a kick and getting speed up should be quicker.

I like the twins but have nothing to compare it to in terms of another rx single turbo.

Out of interest, I went out in Max\'s car the other night, GT35/40. VERY smooth drive, very tractable from low RPM, full boost (only .85bar at the time while he\'s messing about installing and playing about with other stuff) around 3.2K RPM. Even at .85bar it feels loads faster than when it was on twins running 305atw\'s...

Like I said, a very nice drive lumbering about but when its at full boost through the upper half of the rpm range it just flies :)

I still like jumping into a TT car when things are running perfectly and bounding around town, but given the choice I personally would go for a small-ish single for reliability more than any thing.

would i be right in thinking 450bhp is gonna be a hell of a bitch as an everyday driver?

Its also to do with the size of the turbo, compressor wheel/housing etc.  1bar of boost in twins may feel a lot slower than the same in a bigger single turbo.

450bhp thats a fair amount!

Id want proof of 450.  Only a handful of cars on here have that much.

Cheers

its not a definate amount, but even 380-420bhp is a hell of a lot i think for a dalily driver.  plus a triple plate clutch wouldnt be the best in trafic :)

If you\'re staying around stock power I\'d say twins, but once you run above stock boost I\'d go with a single being better for a daily drive.  With the stock twins and more boost traction just goes out the window when it is wet, so having a larger range of revs to use when pulling out of junctions would be a benefit.
As for running a triple plate clutch in a daily driver :rollin

Hello Mintyfresh dude,

I\'ve had both a twin / single turbo rx mate and would say both feel fine as a daily driver. If you have a 400+bhp single turbo i\'m sure it should have a AVCR on it, if so simply turn it to low boost and lower the boost manually too which should keep the pressure off the engine/turbo somewhat?

The triple plate clutch will be a bit*h in traffic mate as i have a twin plate and thats quite hard going when in traffic.:(

But i would say if you had a choice the twin would be better for everyday use, i had one for a year and no probs at all, depends how you drive too, if you\'re gonna try racing every dude out there then gonna be hard going and heavy petrol:eek:

Mines running at 460+bhp single T78 turbo bridgeported engine and so far feels fine as a everyday drive, although the boost is off right down to around 300bhp and now feels like its driving alot better. If some fool wishes to race, couple of buttons later 460+bhp and see you later:cool

how easy is it to run a 400bhp car at only 300bhp for everyday use?

would u all say a triple plate clutch is sh*t for everyday?  or is it something i can get used to?

Minty.

Its quite easy to run a 400bhp at 300bhp, it\'ll feel alot more comfortable mate and smoother too.

The clutch is a case of getting used to, i\'m getting alot better now with the twin plate, but never driven a triple plate b4 so not sure how that feels. Best thing to do is take it for a test drive and see what you think?:)  You\'ll see what i mean mate, bad in traffic

20 B  - you talking to me? or Mintyfresh?

Nice one Si, nice pic:rollin

Will prob get the car dyno\'d sometime in next few months as its not really top of the list to be honest.
Compared to my other cars its stupidly fast:eek:  not sure where to go in the midlands to get dyno\'d? i think graham goode?

Trying to get hold of a double din unit first as the one in there at the mo is just a cd player leaving a gap above it.

Calm down dude,

if you want a big power rx7 then its a must to have either a twin / triple plate clutch to contain the power output, best thing to do is take it out for a spin and see how you get on. Dont let us guys put you off:(

Just took out the missis in mine and showed her the potential power, after a few screams and shouts had to turn the boost back down:rolleyes:

Weather permitting Si should get the same treatment next sunday;)

But Minty take her out first and see what you make of it, dont write it off just yet:wave

ID go single, I had the apexi rx6b and was making 401rwhp at 14psi with a major boost leak preventing  boost between 6k and 7500rpms. The coupler at my intercooler had a hole so I couldnt get a real solid number. I drove it daily and it was fine, quick boost, full boost by 3400 rmps, and it was smooth. Gas mileage was great when I wasnt hopping on it. I liked it so much I sold it and went to a custom t04r and am looking for 500rwhp this time around

I think a single turbo one would have less problems if it\'s used as a everyday car, or am I wrong?

There is a RR in Walsall (W Midlands) if anyones interested... just behind Midland Performance Centre http://www.m-p-c.demon.co.uk/

Iv got a triple plate clutch in mine, sits at 315bhp, its hard at first to pull away but u do get used to it lol.. saying that the revs need 2 be around 2000 - 25000 to pull away smoothly :yes

I run 460+ bhp through my twins ( yes I know I\'ve just blown them up but thats constant abuse on the track and strip, but they have lasted a long time ) and I run a single plate clutch the same as Geff does in the 9sec FD. I used it as an everyday/weekend drive  low boost 300bhp high boost 462bhp all you do is touch one button and thats it, up or down. when you have it mapped you can say what bhp you want the low boost to be, by setting the low boost at that bhp. If that makes sence.HTH. :cheers

I can\'t see the big deal between single vs twins and everyday driveability. Our cars a single turbo from Ross, it was abit of a crap drive until Jaydee recommended putting in a single  ACT clutch. Have no probelms with it at all. It\'s almost as easy to drive as any regular car, just got to watch out on the acceleartion peddle. The girlfriend even used it for a while as here everyday car - and that\'s saying something! if you want a single turbo to be driveable it is definately possible. :yes

TBH John,

She makes alot of house calls in most areas there\'s many speed bumps so it deffo dont make sense to take the RX plus she doesn\'t really ask as she\'s quite happy driving the MGF now its no longer lowered down  :cool

Was struggling to get over the speed humps with the MGF  :eek

Careful about that tho, boosty power delivery feels faster psychologically even when it\'s not overall, because you feel a "kick" more than you notice a gradual build. I drove a unmodded 200SX the other day and it felt WAY faster to 60, whereas actually, it\'s more or less the same as mine.

QuoteYou\'ll see what i mean mate, bad in traffic

Because it\'s heavy or because it\'s on/off and hard to creep? Can always give it brap-brap-brap instead of creeping and it won\'t damage the clutch like it might normally, since that\'s the point of a twin-plate anyway :D

On yours the main problem is shouting over the noise of your bearings!

Anyway... it\'s up to your driving style. If you use the throttle as an on-off then you might get on with a single, and if you prefer to balance the car then you might get on better with twins or a small single.

You can turn boost down on big-ass setups - but every turbo has a sweet spot and running a big turbo at lower boost can be a bit laggy, just as running a small turbo at big boost gives you temp problems.
