Title: Viewing a car in an hour.
Post by: MintyFresh on February 13, 2004, 02:07:48 PM
Im about to go view a \'92 k reg RX7, not sure about the model, i will find out when i get there.  Its done 48,000 miles, and has a full Bomex bodykit, single wiper conversion, 17" alloys etc....

Is their anything in particular i should look for?  its a private seller, and is there anything engine wise i can check(i know nothing about the rotary)?

quick replys would be great.

Check oil and coolant for sludge/gunk.  Some \'mayonnaise\' is normal in the oil this time of year.

On cold startup there will be a little smoke, this shoulc go after a minute of so.  there should be NO smoke when warm even under WOT.

It should start well hot and cold.  Make sure it does both!

There should be no play in steering, it should go in a streight line when on a decent surface.

There should be no clunks from gears or suspension.

Check handles and the like - they are small but annoying when they break.

Air con should work well - dificult to test in winter.  Check headlights work (pop-up mechanism).

Ideally you\'ll have it booked in to a rotary specialist to check over for compression and other issues.

The gears should feel positive but not notchy.

That\'s all I can think of for now...

See how easy it starts should be on the button, check the colour of the exhaust fumes - should start off white till it warms up.
Insist on a compression test - should be done by a rotary expert.
Make sure it is not dumping coolant on the floor
Any form of service history would be good.
Hope this helps

thanks people.

lets hope this is the one.  ive seen a few over the last few days, but none that i would say was a must buy.

so a compression test is a must, wotever the condition?

I know the car I did some work on it last year. If I rememeber rightly it\'s  red with black wheels can\'t remember if the wheels we\'re 3 spoke or not I think they we\'re.
The owner has not had it that long then if it\'s the correct car i\'m waffling on about. It drove ok, but body work was different colour red all round don\'t know if it\'s been resprayed since I saw it.

Compression test is very important.  It will show up some problems but it may not always indicate a sick engine so it\'s no guarantee of health.

Only real way to tell if an engine will last is to drive it until it dies - then you\'ll know!

ive been to see it and there are good points, and bad points.

one its gonna need a re-spray to A: remove the chips and B: match the skirts and the body.  any idea on costs for this?

the guy says theres a blueprint clutch on order, but that will need fitting.  costs anyone?

the drivers door handle has been snapped off. again, it is on order.  how much to fit?

and finally, apparently the second turbo is lagging and he has been told it is the blitz BOV and the recirc valve not working well together.  any comments on this?  i have been assured that 2 new recirc valves are on order.

i want your input guys.

Minty, ok here goes.

A) Price depends on where you take it.

B) DS Engineering in Northfleet Kent charge circa 150 for fitting a clutch to an FD.

C) Should be able to fit youself.

D) Get yourself some stock (OE) dump valve and change over valve.

As I said about the boost issue & vacuum pipes. I pointed them out that they needed replacing and they said they would but maybe never did. So maybe the dump is ok.

I dont know the car in question, but if it was me id buy a car that was running properly as it could become a nightmare otherwise.  Im guessing its relativly cheap, as all the thing you listed are going to add up.

If I were looking at getting a car resprayed (same colour) ... I would expect a quote somewhere in the region of £1000, but that will depend on how good a reputation the bodyshop has (good ones charge a lot more)

Absolutely not. As I said to before I did work on it for a company last year and checked it over for them. I fixed the coolant issue as I said and and told them the reason for there boost issue which they said they would sort before they sell it. That was the last I heard about the car until you mention the description today.
I have never and would never import a car in that state unless I was going strip down for parts.
