Title: Clutching question... :)
Post by: Kevin on October 08, 2007, 09:36:38 AM
Ok, im still not happy with this clutch, i\'ve done about 400 miles on it now and it still doesnt seem right.  When it was first fitted it seemed very juddery changing gear, especially in first, but thought it needed bedding in.  Then about 100 miles into using it, when you start off from cold you get a very bad smell of burning, which then goes after the cars been driven for a couple of miles.

Then the clutch hose went along with the slave cylinder.  I\'ve replaced these with genuine mazda items.  But the clutch still behaves in the same way.

The worst scenario is when I first start it up and back it out my garage, I have a small incline to reverse up before I get on the road, now you can hear the clutch produce a very loud wearing sound, abit like it\'s slipping but it\'s not.  Then it does the same setting off in first, bad wearing sound.

The clutch judders when starting off in first even when the cars been driven abit, and also judders when changing down gears, i.e. from 4th to 3rd judders and 3rd to second judders.

I\'ve had uprated clutches in many different cars in the past, one being on a 600hp 300zx, but even that seemed like a dream to drive compared to this.

Any ideas? Or am I just being overally picky on the car after all the crap it\'s given me.

No, does not sound right.
Get the garage to check it, if its wrong, they may have to refit or replace.
What clutch is it?

Hi Kevin,

With every thing you are describing you will need to remove the gear box and check the release bearing for the noise and the center plate for distortion and , or oil on the surface and lastly the pressure plate fingers.

If you would like to follow this link you will find more info on the above

While you at it check the clutch is not bent as the FD is prone to this with a heavy aftermarket clutch.

It\'s having it\'s first service at pip\'s tomorrow since it\'s rebuild so im going to ask him.  Just wanted a few opinions first just to see if i was being overally paranoid.

Definately taking the pleasure of driving out of the car at the moment, it\'s bad enough trying to put the first 1000 miles on the engine, without looking like a learner kangarooing the car off from the lights.

I have an excedy one in my S14 and it\'s fantastic to drive/drift.
