Title: should an m3 keep up??
Post by: nick english on October 07, 2007, 04:15:50 PM
just had a tear up with a m3 convertible and couldnt shake him on the straight flooring it in 3rd until redline was just leaving him but not a lot!!
mine is 99spec twins standard no apexi etc..
should i be pulling away better than that??
need to change my alloys/tyres as grip not that good due to wrong sized wheels-18"" but only 8"" width allaround
do i change these first or do the apexi route first as im not having a bl***y bmr keeping up with me:reallymad .
dont want to do single conversion as only have 17000 miles on car.
or should i be getting my car checked???

tbh, m3\'s are pretty high powered. the evo is standard with crap fuel at 350!

yeah, i would. you have less weight but also less power then an m3. they are amazing cars! mate of mine took his classic shaped m3 evo to nurburgring and was cruising with great economy at 150! :D

You did well to pull away tbh. An E46 m3 is a pretty even match for a 320bhp fd

After using an e30 318is (kind of like a baby M3) for a month I\'d absolutely love to have an e30 m3. I wouldn\'t give a damn that the power is a bit yesterday, they are so good to drive. With the risk of taking a flaming I\'d say they are a lot more usable on the limit than a high power Rx7. Not to say I\'d ever choose one over a Rex but for outright fun they are soooo good.

i did like my e36 alpina as it taught me how to handle a rwd even if i did end up facing the wrong way a couple of times lol.dont think the handling was quite up to the m3 -never driven one but wouldnt mind a go in one now:yes

Hi

What are your specs?  Is it all standard?

Incidentally, when you get an Apexi pfc you should be able to up the boost on both turbos a touch, say 5% but you will need a modified map not base map ( my boost is at 0.94 ) , you injector duty will go up a touch but to safe levels.. then you will leave M3s....I do, having said that my cat is removed and my air pump thus freeing around 50kilos, One less pulley for the engine to pull, I also have HKS super dragger and dragon performance mid pipe thus increasing the flow of the gases...

Mods above alone with a proper map will lift your bhp to well pass 300 atw

The other day a slated 3 year old Scooby, from standstill till 3rd I was around 5 cars ahead, I also had the mrs and a heavy computer tools bag with me
(All on private road)

blitz induction, nur spec r back box only, blitz dump valve but that is it still have air con and cat and probably carrying about 60 kilos in the boot with all the fiberglass and wood in the boot with the ice install.def think apexi is next on the hitlist once i have sorted the wheels as the handling is not that great. dont know which to do first though

...if you remove the cat ( and the air pump ) you will need the Apexi ECU , so get the Apexi first, put a modified map allowing for the cat removal then remove the cat, air pump and change the pulleys to accommodate for shorter belt

The day I had the Apexi installed and a modified map put on by ant on here, the car drove sensational, it was so much more responsive especially in the higher revs, it really felt like I had more power after the 4k revs.  The big change was when I had the cat removed, it felt like I have been driving with a passenger all day and suddenly the passenger got off and the car was so much faster and lighter

You will love the drive immediately after the Apexi ECU gets installed with the right map...

I know what you mean but the HKS super dragger is miles better then the original mazda exhaust system which it is too restrictive and as you say the sound IMO is second to none.

My HKS box is massive hence the super sound, do you mean it has a slight bend in it?  I am not sure if it makes so much difference if you system is around 3" in width like mine, mind you I could be wrong, my box’s "exit" is massive, you could almost put you head in it, dragon performance mid pipe is 3", being a 96 model I have no pre cat in the down pipe any way...

Super Dragger michael is talking about has 3" bore and 5 1/2" exit! better than stock (obviously) some models restrictive due to bends inside the rear back box itself.

many fans (and many haters :rollin)

looks like i will be getting the apexi before my new alloys then will see lum as he knows someone on here in the bristol area.
on the other point of my wheels should it make that much difference with the rear wheels being undersized as they are only 8"width with yoko avs sport rubber as handling seems to be a bit pants my r5gtt had soooo much more grip than my rex which squeals like a pig through roundabouts??

I\'ve got 8" rims all round and never get wheel spin even with my ported/single setup. Have you had your geometry checked? Also worth getting your suspension setup/ bushes checked incase they\'re knackered.

i had a play with an m3 convertable on an 02 plate. he wasnt keeping up with me, im running stock boost with just air filters and catback.

He did have two other guys with him tho and they were on the bigger side. But even so these cars are 300kgs more than a rex.

remember tho, this could end up turning into a vicious circle. cos theres always gonna be someone somewhere that you wont be able to keep up with.

probably dosent help me with all that weight i have in the boot-cant lift it on my own (maybe rip it out/redo ice)-going to go the apexi route first and then get bushes checked and maybe lower it a bit to give it a lower stance/better handling.
if i dont change my alloys that will save me a grand or so then i can afford to do it now:yes

Hi guys, ex FD owner here, and now have a 02 M3 cabrio. A stock FD would NOT pull away from an E46 M3! My FD was fast but wouldn\'t pull away from an M3, let alone get infront! ALOT more torque and power than the FD. I loved my FD loads but the M3 is in a different league. 343BHP vs 255BHP? Yes, the M3 is heavier but also more horsepower and puts down more torque.

I used to have an E36 Evo and in a straight line 321bhp felt very quick.
I\'ve raced E46 M3\'S and there isnt much in it due to the E46 is heavy

If the FD and an M3 was starting from the mark then i\'d put my money on a standard FD until 120mph (in a straight line) but if both cars started from 40+mph the torque and power delivery in the M3 is so constant the FD would struggle bigtime IMO.

With an Apexi PFC i think an FD would p*ss on its chips all the way then hehe

only one slight difference mine is a 1999 so has more bhp as standard and did pull away from him in third briefly-i think whilst he was changing gear lol but never realised how quick they were-I DO NOW!!!

That\'s why i said a 320bhp fd is an even match for a stock E46. My fd is 320bhp/279ft.Ibf. Stock E46 M3 us model 333bhp/262ft.Ibf. Obviously M3 is heavier than fd. I think my fd would be just a bit more quicker IMO I agree that a stock fd would NOT pull on a E46. Trouble is with the fd is that it\'s so good, owners think it will beat everything. Just not true though.

How long\'s a piece of string? It depends on how much money your willing to throw into it. To get the most on a stock engine you should upgrade injectors, fuel pump, fit better intercooler and decat the car. All this could cost another £600+ on top of the £300-400 mapping fee. Also it depends what tuner you take it to. Some squeese more power from them.

I then got the car mapped to 1bar with water injection with boost controller etc and that was it:burnout Every time we were out i gave him good run for his money.  He has since got M5 now (*******) :Nono!

I have JUST SLATED, KEPT UP AND PASSED A FAIRLY NEW m3, it took 3rd gear but he was a goner mate…( on private road )

I have HKS super dragger, dragon performance de cat mid pipe, Apexi â€" boost up to 0.94, probably running 350BHP, no air pump, greddy pulleys, Tein suspension set on VERY HARD

M3 needs all that power as it ways at least 500kG more than a stock RX7

By removing the cat and the air pump I have also lost around 50KG

Regards,
Michaelb

M3 Convertabler specs off BMV site
Insurance Group: 20
Fuel: 23.7 mpg
CO2: 292 g/km
Engine Size: 3246 cc
Power : 343 bhp
0-60: 5.2 s

Compare that to a "slightly" modded RX7 like mine..

…get a proper modified map like ant on here put on my ECU with boost up by 7% - 10% Remove the nasty flow blocking cat and you will see the increase of power especially in the higher rev counter ( personal experience ).

The above mods will be most noticeable and pleasurable performance mods you will notice on stock twins…

what are you stock? 280BHP? extra 70BHP just by increasing boost with a de-cat and apexi ecu and decent map?

didn\'t have to mess with injectors or fuel pumps, etc?

Apexi, mild porting and decent breather mods and you can kiss an m3 goodbye all day long and then throw some flames at him :flamed

EDIT: M3\'s are quick cars though, no matter what people say

OK,

My car is a 96 RB Bathurst ( jap import ) jap RXs have a touch more BHP, I guess the figure above is more or less correct. My injectors are right up to 94% duty thou so that is all I can get...similar car at powergains was mapped with the above mods and got just under 350BHP, HKS racing suction kit ( around £400 new ) should also give a turbo (and my car ) car around 10 or so more BHP

You will absolutely love the mods when you get in the car, do it all at once, dont drive with out the right map for your mods...

I don’t know which model you have but mine had no pre cat in the down pipe, you may have it( UK models do ), if so, you also should get a de cat down pipe â€" dead cheap too form dragon

I think there is a bit of difference between a E36 and E46.  Ive had a go with a E36 and he couldnt keep up, thats when my rx was running around 300bhp.  E46 look awesome and the CSL is meant to be pretty quick and lighter than the normal one
car                             year   bhp   weight  0-60   qm
BMW M3 Coupe E36        98     286     1460    5.52 13.84
BMW M3 Coupe E46        02     343     1577    5.08 13.33
BMW M3 Coup CSL E46   03     355     1385    4.49 12.74
