Title: Boost controllers.
Post by: TonyC on October 04, 2007, 11:13:19 PM
I need to fit a boost controller to the green monster, and I have had the AVC-R recommended, but I wonder if anyone can answer a question.

Do I need to get a seperate AVC-R unit when I already have a Power FC. The power FC can control boost - to allow it to do this you (apparently) need one of these:
http://www.neweraparts.com/Default.aspx?tabid=54&txtSearch=boost&CategoryID=1&List=0&Level=1&ProductID=35

What\'s the advantage of the full AVC-R unit? Bare in mind that I intend to pay a (very tall) man to map my car and then I\'m going to leave it alone. I don\'t really want a screen in the car giving me info I\'m too busy to read (I have a seperate boost gauge), nor am I interested in being able to select high boost, low boost, overtaking boost or Cadburys boost.

Anyone ever gone down this route? Anyone tried mapping boost on the power FC and not with a seperate boost controller?

TC

if thats is the case i would go with a basic greddy profec B spec II,  small easy to fit, works really well and the tuners know how to use it.  Forget the apexi boost controller from what i\'ve heard, no tuner i know likes them.

If you arnt going to touch it then you just want a basic boost setting, profec will do the job fine and they are about 180 quid.!

I\'m sure I read somewhere that Carl says the Apex\'i ones aren\'t actually that bad.

Carl seems to have been happy with mine so far.

I\'m not saying I don\'t want boost accuratley controlled, but I do like consider things. The AVC-R is a boost ECU, the PFC has boost mapping and the solenoid I posted the link to above is the same as you get with the AVCR. So in-effect the ACVR is doing the same job as the PFC. You can set up 4 boost settings in the PFC, mapped in the PFC, and use the commander to select between them.

It\'s nothing to do with price. I like to ensure I\'ve the most efficent setup - and is a seperate boost ECU and associated TV screen the way to do it when the PFC and this additional solenoid does the job - seems more efficient to me, and this is what you would do if you were fitting a MOTEC or similar ECU.

I\'ve been looking into this today and they do seem to be used, they are  limited in boost because they use the stock MAP sensor - but if you upgrade that to a 3 bar sensor then the PFC can control much higher boost.
It may seem a little unorthodox but I\'m sure this is a smart way to do it for the race car.
I\'ve no need of the AVCR stuff for differnet boost in different gears, etc - I\'m pretty much used to managing the cars power with my foot, and I get annoyed with any electronics trying to limit me. Put it this way, I can drive an M3 CSL around a circuit faster with the stability controls all off, then I can with it on.
It all comes back to wanting the car mapped, and then left static. Another worry with the boost controlers is that the boost \'knob\' gets twisted and not noticed. I really want the boost to be mapped and controlled in the same way ignigtion is, and when done I don\'t want to go anywhere near it.

Why do people seem to alway recommend the greddy pfrfec b spec II, on other forums people seem to hate it and is well known for having a unreliable solenoid.

The greddy unit is very good if you know how to use it correctly. I wouldnot bother with the apexi boost control unit. You wont have the adjustability on the fly that a seperate unit will offer.  If you can modulate the throttle with no probs why not use a simple controler and just alter the waste gate gain.

go with the profec its easy

What I liked about the Profec B is you can heve an infer red button on your steering wheel that at a flick can go to second setting.

I find the Apexi AVCR is a very good boost controller,it is a seperate unit just like the Profec b.
It does not need to be set up for each gear although it can be too.
Interested to see if the seperate solenoid that Tony is on about works with the power FC.It must be worth a try.
Regards
Carl

But that\'s the thing: Tony\'s not after gadgets and cool little trickery things that you can do. He wants one boost setting. Set it up, and go. Not have to worry about it. I don\'t see why the apexi won\'t do that.

This is the Extra solenoid that we got into a errr.. discusion about :Tongue1 , when i said you need to perchase a seperate solenoid to go with the PFC to control boost proply :) , i have since been educated and know now that boost should be able to be controled by the pfc alone :D .

We may have been talking about twin turbo applications at the time i forget :D

Could you not just use a manual boost controller? Mechanical, and once set that\'s your lot?

Or do the electric one\'s keep the wastegate shut for longer meaning you\'ll get peak boost quicker? Can this not be done with a manual one?

I think in theory a mechanical one would do the job exactly as you\'d want. But I think there may be consistency/reliability issues with mechanical ones. But don\'t quote me! :D

I\'d have thought there\'d be less to go wrong with a mechnical jobbie, hence more reliable?

But I have no idea!

Mechanical boost controllers dont get the boost on so early as solenoid controlled types.
Hi Steve,I think we were talking about the twins still yes.

I\'m sure we\'ll find out my friend :)

Add on boost control unit where the PFC controls the boost (3 bar map sensor)

Then swap to Profec (after a few more mods)

This is on a stock twin and I retained the 3bar sensor when swapping to the Profec. The boost control solenoids where swapped over and the original pipes where used.

Yep, and as I mentioned, the A\'pexi manual states that the PFC boost kit is only to be used when the factory sequential turbo setup is not being used. Because it only uses the primary setting for controlling boost, not both primary and secondary.
It\'s clearly not the correct bit of kit for stock twins. But I\'m running a single turbo.
