hi, i\'m a fairly newbie to the rx and have a question - where can i get a fuel cut defender? i am putting a new clutch in my FC next week and i\'m going to fit a fully de-catted stainless exhaust which came with the car at the same time. by looking through the forum i\'m guessing i will need one - also have induction kit fitted.
thanks in advance
im not 100% on the fc but but i would hang for with the mods until you know there safe. the rotary is a bit delicate and i know on the fd a decat can cause all sorts of problems if not accompanied by the correct fule mods.
im sure one of the fc lads will be along shortly to clue you in on the fc\'s specifics. or try in the fc section i think there\'s a post of different mods and there results.
also wlcome to the club mate.

cheers, i don\'t really know much about rotaries - always had piston engines and done loads of rebuilds etc on them. i just thought id fit the stanless as its taking up valuable garage space - the FC came with a van load of spares including the stainless!
You can run the car with the de-cat stainless system just dont go holding on those revs too much. You will most certainly need a FCD as otherwise the ECU will simply cut the fuel off if it boosts too much. I am also in the stages of doing much the same but going to invest in a Apexi PFC and a wiring adapter (FD PFC) this will then have no need for a FCD
I thought the fuel cut was there for a reason..... if overboost occurs it stops you doing damage to the engine???
jono
well yes but it stops the ECU cutting the fuel off or rather raises the levels at which it does it. When you decat and add intakes and exhausts its so very easy to get boost creep and at a rather large scale and it will happen in a blink, the ECU will cut the fuel normally but this could be detrimental to a rotary. If you have a Power FC this will stop this as well.
In my expireance of fcd\'s you shouldn\'t go putting them on without fueling mods. They work by tricking the ecu so will no longer fuel correctly for that level of boost. I\'ve heard of many piston engines been destroyed this way.
right now for an update, never got roung to fitting the clutch till last weekend as was way too busy so i had plenty of time to get an fcd. got one from ebay - turned out it was i australia! got it 6 months ago and plugged it in but i dont read any boost with it connected so i am having to run without it for now and being careful! i\'ve had it apart and no dry solder joints so i\'m guessing its dead. has anyone on here got a 2nd hand one they want to get rid of for a reasonable price?
Theres normally plenty on ebay.com - look for the KNightsports FBCD\'s they are normally pretty good.
when it was connected could you feel the boost ??
when i fitted one to mine the stock gauge hardly moved but the aftermarket boost gauge showed .9bar
so if you can feel it boosting - then its working as it should be
if you dont want it though - im happy to try it for you ( i need a FCD as im gonna decat mine and have been looking for one for ages ! )
Stu
it did feel down on power IIRC - it was nearly a week ago! i\'ll try it again later and let u know if its still boosting or not, it is a knightsports FCD and i got a aftermarket boost guage to fit also. i have noticed that my factory boost guage is a bit tempermental! one day it goes right to top of guage others only half way but boost always feels the same!
hummmm ... it shouldnt be down on power with the FCD - and like i said - should boost happy to .9bar on the other guage
i know this is a silly question - how did you plug it in ?
I\'ve got a spare Knightsport FCD for sale, paid £75 for it, looking for £55, barely used as I went down the Microtech route.
Here\'s a pic;
I can confirm its working, have hit around 12psi with my 3\'\' straight through (to no ill effect!)

cheers for the offer benlewismav thats exactly the one i have at mo - i\'ll let you know once i\'ve tested mine again - i\', going to crudely attach the aftermarket guage (its sat on my sideboard at home at mo!) quickly to see what its boosting at. it wouldn\'y surprise me if its dead cos i only gave £25 for it. Grinder i connected it by unplugging the boost pressure sensor and connecting the fcd in line with the plugs - can\'t go any other way can it? but just to chck how many wires have you got going inoto your boost sensor on the car loom plug? i\'ve only got 3 and the FCD has 4 is this normal?
cheers for the help so far guys
yeah you connected it right
you need to get the after market gauge plumbed in to see whats going on
is there any writing on the side of the FCD - as the s4 and s5 are NOT interchangable
hi guys just thaught i would give my ten penneth i im pretty new to the rotary ting but i learn quick and am not new to turbo monsters, firstly boost cut is bad it is your engines safety devise . my opinion is that fcd are a cheap cure and not proper prevention and hitting 12 psi will fubar your engine sooner rather than later , really you need to address the problem that causes it and in the case of 3" system it is the wastegate. ive been gathering bits for my fc over the last few month and on saturday i put the turbo back on after porting the wastegate and housing i fitted a turbo back 3" system and a cheapo aftermarket air filter (cone jobbie) the only restriction ive temporary kept are the two 90 bends between the turbo and the afm. i also removed all the emmision ****e and although ive not extensivly tested i took her on a 20 mile country lane thraping with lots of full boost high load, low load situations and a couple of dicey moments watching the boost guage and it only just touches .6 bar and then it holds a tad over .5 and no boost cut. so make your own mind up but be warned rotarys are not cheap!
Partially true, of course the reason they are produced and used by world class tuners is because although the MAP pressure sensors voltage is clamped (-and therefore the map sensor never reads above .7 bar boost), the Air flow meter is still calculating the correcting fuel requirements for the amount of air entering the engine. So to be honest theres not really any danger.
If you had to clamp both the AFM and the MAP sensor that might be a different story... (and a guarenteed disaster)
Oh, and in terms of the interal wastegate being too small, Definately a good idea to port it. Standard its a nicely balanced system, but once you free up the very restrictive exhaust, you throw the whole thing out shape and have to start chasing bottlenecks, the next being the tiny wastegate hole.. (which is why I\'m going external)

any of you guys interested? i need to get sell her really i cany afford to run 2 cars all the time and need a back seat also alot of the time so cant be my main car. i got all the mots from new but no service history although ive done it every 3000 mile. cheers
ive finally got round to drivinit again for a bit and tried the fcd again and i can hear it boosting but it just doesnt feel like - its much more free revving without it connected. also the boost guage doesnt move at all with it connected. it says on the side FC£S ->1989. i\'m thinking it culd be for the previous model FC. havent connected aftermarket guage yet as havent found a mouting point that looks right yet - where do you guys put yours?
i have now fitted the boost guage, and it hits 10psi of boost then settles down to 8 psi until around 4500/5000 rpm then goes upto 10psi again and have hit fuel cut. this is without the FCD connected. the fcd i have is for the series 4 and therefor no good for my engine. looks like i need to buy your fcd benlewismav.
