Hello All, this is my first time posting, so please be nice! lol
I have been a big fan of the FD for quite some time now, and this forum has been great!!! thank you all!!! learning things from the best launches by priming the drivetrain through to the boost leaks/spikes/creep.
I am currently deciding between the FD and the GT4 ST205.
I was just wondering if you would shed some light on some questions I have?
The things that bother me with the FD are the second turbo kicking in whilst on a wet road.
A Japanese car magazine quoted "you\'d have to been doing something extemely stupid to crash this car" when referring to the ST205
Also, I found this 1/4 mile Best Motoring clip...stock 205 vs. Stock FD Type RZ! the results might surprise some ppl, tho u can c quite clearly as they cross the line that if it was 50yds more the FD would **** on the Celica!!??
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj8-fBC6XHk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj8-fBC6XHk)
I\'ve heard ppl say about the low-down grunt of the twins, but also \'smooth power delivery\'?? hows that? do u still feel the G\'s? i want something to push me back in the chair really.
I would love to own the FD (got my sights set on a Rebuilt, Veilside, bare-arsed one) but things that are putting me off are the boost leaks (seems to happen regularly hence doing non-seq), and the weather lately, is it really that easy to come out of a roundabout backwards in the wet? or is it plain stupidity?
PIP is only 60mins away which is cool. Other than a rebuild, is there anything I should look out for when buying an FD? I know a new gearbox could set me back about £500-600, but is there anything else that could cause me to panic?? are the shifters prone to problems?? heard a few ppl say they\'ve shifted from 2nd gear to 5th!! any other common, expensive problems??
If I went for the FD, I would upgrade the Intercooler, cold air induction, straight-through, decent dump valve, apexi ECU & Commander and re-map, what would I be looking at for BHP??? do you need an external wastegate if u go straight through or would a re-map do??
Once again thanks for your help. Please give your opinions on the Video as well. Thanks!
i think a lot of these questions ive already seen answered. what exactly is a GT4 ST205 ??

A 2.0 litre, 4wd turbo charged Toyota Celica.
I can\'t compare the 205, but.
I currently own an S14a 200sx - when it comes on boost it is a tad mental, it\'s lag, lag, spike.
I\'ve now test driven a few FD\'s, and the power delivery is totally different - smooth build up to screaming revs. I imagine the 205 is more of an SX type thing than an FD style delivery.
My SX was the first powerful RWD car i\'ve ever had, and in 2 and a half years of owning it, it\'s scared me once. Any RWD car will bite you if you hoon it around like an idiot. Respect it, and learn the car, and you should be fine.
The 205 will mask a lot of this due to it\'s 4wd system, which, imho is not as rewarding to drive - it\'s more of a point and shoot affair than the FD\'s finesse built handling. It will be a lot more forgiving.
Is it going to be a second car? The GT4 would be a better everyday car without a doubt but for sheer fun alone I\'d choose the RX
thought you were talking about a peugot :eek
learning to real instead of skim :spank

haha! that would be funny if a stock pug 205 beat a stock FD RZ in a 1/4 mile drag.
Isn\'t anyone surpised that a Stock Celica GT4 ST205 can beat a stock FD Type RZ???
On paper the Rex should of killed it power/weight wise?? i\'ve heard the Celica is heavy!
The Celica is geared shorter (145-150mph) and has 4wd - its going to get a better start.
I can\'t get on youtube at work - what were the ETs for both? Just because the GT4 crossed the line first in that vid it doesn\'t mean its actually a faster car ;)
looks like the RX7 was catching up once in third gear... the 4wd gives the GT the advantage
as above, me n a m8 came out a slip road, i was in a evo 5 standard, him in a single tubed rex, altho i kept up, he started to pull away once higher revs kicked in lol.. 320bhp on a 4x4 is guna be quicker than a 320bhp rear wheel drive car due to better grip on the 4x4.. but the rex will wipe the floor we it.. every time :P, fit drag suspenstion n redo the test lol.. bet the gt4s a mile behind hehe
I had a 99 t reg st205 and it was a great fun car but nothing compared to the rex. Quite a heavy car but 50/50 split 4wd can get a bit boring to drive after a while. No steer from the rear fun. Was cheaper to run though. Never had any trouble with it and it was mildly modded boost controller exhaust intake unichip etc. Mind you havent had any trouble with the rex either!!
HTH

having read the specs on that vid clip, the GT4 isn\'t much heavier at 1380kg with 255ps at 6000rpm
with 4wd and that power & weight with the closer gearing of a rally type car the ST205 would be a match for the FD over the standing 1/4
I\'d take that 1380Kg with a pinch of salt, given that the previous model was 1520kg - the same as an R32 GTR!!!
Pah pistons! :Nono!
a local guy round here owns one of those celicas and he wasnt able to keep up down country lanes.
but in the wet he would prolly hand my ass to me.
That video wasnt at all biased towards the celica. Honest.
I\'d take those video\'s with a pinch of salt, also why do they always run early FD\'s on those against later revised other models, why not run 99-> FD\'s and see what happens? Anyway with a few mods thrown at the FD the celica wouldnt stand much of a chance.
..................plus look at them side by side for god sake.......... Catch my drift...

Ha ha that last post made me laugh!
My mate at work has a GT4 ST205 and I have an FD. My FD is stock and so is his GT4 bar a straight through exhaust. 1st and 2nd gear is pretty much neck and neck, 3rd gear my FD pulls from it but not by much.
GT4- Cheaper to run, easier to drive in all weather conditions, more suitable to everyday use.
FD- Much nicer feel to it, more fun to drive, MUCH better looks, better presence.

my m8 has the same celica and i have a stock 99 fd and i have destroyed him both times in 1st,2nd and third then ran out of runway!!!!!:flamed
I think on the 400 meter, they are pretty even. 3rd gear on an fd is a killer and thats why it started to reel the celica in. But thats on a straight road, where\'s the fun in that? I reckon on a track the fd would have it

The fd is terrible in the wet. Especially going round islands or bends. Drive it like a pensioner
Even a stock fd will push you back in the seat
The main problem with an fd is the engine. failed water seals, broken apex seals and turbo system not boosting properley
If pip mapped it, expect about 300-330 at the flywheel with the mods you stated

you need to check your mounts, bushings and then get your geometry done.
the fd is not at all bad in the wet, its one of two things; the driver or the cars age and neglect.
a set of coilovers dont do it either! :Tongue1
4wd masks bad drivers rwd shows good ones.
Make sure you get good tyres on the FD, on the dry the FD wins hands down on fast twisties.
Anyway whats a standard FD have not seen one in years??? lol :rollin
My FD is a daily driver only ONCE have i had the back end step out. And it was my own fault, I put the hammer down too quick in the wet going in a stright line, like any car show it respect and if you do somthing like that learn from it. Never had trouble with roundabouts, just take them easy and keep off boost.:yes
As for the st205 they are esentialy the same engine as the mr2 turbo (3sgte) minus the top mounted intercooler, I enjoyed driving those cars but they aint as fun as the rex.
Problem wise, if your mechanicaly inclined you can resolve any boost issues you have. sure they can be common on older cars but dont most old cars have their quirks.

:D
Mine aint standard but it is my daily car, even with near enough 400 at the flywheel I\'ve never had any trouble keeping the back in check. Sure if you boot it when it\'s freezing cold and wet you\'ll have traction issues (you would in any car) but so long as you\'ve got decent tyres and all your suspension / bushes are in good order there\'s no reason you can\'t recover from it (unless you\'re being really silly or hit a patch of deisel / oil). Or you could just try not to go mad in bad weather. It\'s VERY good for a RWD car with no traction / stability control.
I really dont think it\'s a case of the RX7 being bad in the wet, it depends what you compare it to. It\'s obviously going to be more of a hand full than a deisel mondeo, but then again how easy to drive would a 400hp mondeo be? Boot it mid corner and you\'d go straight on! I\'ve lost a few bikes round the corners and even out dragged a few and mine\'s not THAT quick!. Pound for pound for two cars of the same power you\'d do well to find a more exciting ride than the FD. Also if you\'re looking at making more power over time it\'ll cost you a lot more to get the same performance gains out of most other cars.
If we\'re talking about a near stock RX7 in good order you shouldn\'t have a problem so long as you drive within YOUR limits and in consideration of the elements. Think that\'s probably the key :)
Go and test drive a decent one and you\'ll not have to ask any more questions ;)
Have fun!
Hasnt anybody noticed the fact that every time on that ealier clip is different...as in not consistant...
1st run - GT4 - 14.4s
2nd run - GT4 - 14.1s
3rd run - GT4 - 14.063s (RX7 14.120s)
4th run - GT4 - 13.969
How can these even be used to compare...the times are not consistent.
My best mate has a GT4 and he thinks its too slow :D
In any case imo the Celica looks sh!te compared to the FD.
The Celica would definitely make a far better daily driver though, especially if you weren\'t planning to do trackdays (what sort of freak doesn\'t wanna do those though :D ) given the 360 days of ****e weather we have a year a stage 1 GT4 would be far more usuable most of the time, unless you\'re a D1 champion ;)
For those of us lucky enough to have a company car, the RX7 wins hands down every time :D
Every day is a track day when it\'s your daily drive ;)
