Hey guys, after my recent change of symptoms on the car, im curious as i have not seen mention of, if say im driving and my car drops into what could possibly be limp mode, would i do any harm if i leave the engine running and connect the ground and led lights to the diag port, as when i check the codes after a key off / on i get nothing! :Hammer
Won\'t do any harm. The manual has several procedures such as setting the ignition timing and idle speed that require the diagnostic mode to be set while the engine is running.
I take it you\'re getting a single pulse to indicate no faults at the moment?
i have two faults but they have been there since day one. and dont actualy seem to be \'true\' they are saying that the wastegate solenoid and its brother nexto it are faulty - but the boost controller that uses these solenoids works fine. i realy should take it out of the loop just to check that they extinguish.
What symptoms are you getting? I\'ve been racking my brains to remember where I saw a list of conditions that cause limp mode. Can\'t remember though :hammer
Well i just pulled the codes and i got a load more than i did do in the past!
9 - water thermo sensor
11 intake air sensor
27 Mop sensor
42, 43 (i know 42 and 43 are caused by the knightsports boost controller, possibly faulty wireing)
I have taken the Boost controller out of the loop and 9 and 11 seems to persist, 27 has droped off once i cleared the codes down. 27 seems to have been the only one that would cause limpmode, the other two just cause it to go into a failsafe setting. But now i\'m confused as i have not had 9 and 11 in all the time i\'ve been trying to fix this ongoing problem. but most of all 27 is the worrying code! and i cant see -any- of these physicaly causeing the car to cut out, which it was before hand, hasnt done that since i removed the HSK turbo timer *touch wood*
As for symptoms where do you want me to start! nothing consistant to say the least.
:eek Sounds a bit serious!
Odd that so many should just appear. I agree that the MOP sensor is probably the only one that might cause limp mode. You think it\'s a loom fault? Or ECU connector maybe? I can\'t think it\'s because all those sensors have gone faulty. Having said that there was a guy who was having trouble with the code for turbo control solenoid, which turned out to be a faulty ECU.
I\'ve tried two ecu\'s and pulled the 9 and 11 on both of them. But the mop didnt reappear. However this morning on the motorway the car did drop into limp mode. But like a plank i left the LED to pull codes at home, pulled over and turned off.
Let it sit for a few moments and fired it up again, no more limp mode. If this was a faulty mop or sensor i would expect it to be a constant problem rather than an intermitant one. The Only thing i did diffrent was in how i read the codes, i used the GND at the opposite end of the diagnostic box rather than the one nearest the other connector.
I was planning to go to liverpool on a drinking weekend still might, but i think its best i do some wiring checks. failing that i might be looking for some sensors ;)
What\'s the car like when it goes into limp mode?
I can help you out with the sensors. I\'ll pull them out of my spare block if you want?
The list of codes I\'ve got reads:
Metering Oil Pump Sensor
open or short circuit
or MOP sticking
So guess it could be intermittantly sticking. Or maybe there\'s a broken wire or connector that occasionally breaks the circuit. I\'ve got a spare OMP I could lend you too, should you need it.
Don\'t envy you the job :Hammer
Sweet i might take you up on that ;)
I know the omp/mop is somewhere down the left hand side, but i dont know where yet :) I am going to check continuity on the wires first as well as a quick wiggle/clean of the connectors this lunch time thats if i can get my hands in the space provided.
knowing my luck ill get stuck with my hand in the engine bay!
Lol. let me know.
A little more info from section D of the FSM:
27:
Open or short
Loose connection of MOP or PCME
Damaged stepping motor
Position sensor inaccurate
Insufficient PCME voltage
I have a hunch it might be an ECU grounding or +ve supply issue.
Good luck anyway
I love being at work with internet access, Thank you for the information just had a flick through that section of the manual also, i would rather it be something less terminal like a loose connection/voltage loss anway now for lunch :WaveBye
ianelvar, can you confirm to me where the MOP is located on the block i\'ve done a quick search on the net and i think its down the left hand side somewhere :o i dont realy know what it looks like nor what the connector looks like either would be much appreciated
My oil metering pump played up intermittently for nearly a year, causing intermittent limp home mode. It was only when it finally gave up completely I managed to get an error code for it.
It\'s down the bottom of the engine just behind the bottom radiator hose part of the water housing. It\'s almost impossible even to see it with stock twins. Fortunately the electrical connectors are up the top, next to the PAS pump.
I was able to change mine without removing the turbo\'s. I took the water assembly of the front of the engine which gave me room to get to it - about 4 hours of stripping down though :-(
Keith
Wooo fun! :Laugh So the connectors are near the pas pump on the other side of the engine?
Yes, you\'ll maybe have to take the alternator off to get to them. They should just be on top of the black air chamber (can\'t remember if it\'s pressure or vacuum).
Don\'t envy you that job if it\'s got to come off!
I\'m sure you\'ve probably seen this in the manual, but for future reference:
If i was a dog i would whimper. I\'ll give it a good look over weekend, i\'ve striped the front of it enough times now i just click my fingers and it takes its self appart.:Tongue1
Lol. Wish mine did that!
I just hope i dont start clicking my fingers when i drive :Giggle
