Hi Folks,
Just bought a 1990 non turbo. Got few questions and wondered if anyone can help? Do the electric window switches light up on the drivers/passenger door? Does the the mirror switch light up? If they do, mine don\'t! The clock/warning display panel seams to have a mind of it\'s own. Sometimes I get no indications at all when I put the key in and then can be driving along and the rear fog light indicator comes on and the clock goes out! (having not touched anything) The fog lights don\'t come on though. I get no warning lights at all when I put the key in and turn it to postion II. I have had three of these now and can\'t remember any strange behaviour like this!
Also this one has leather seats/ door cards? Did they put this in the later models?
Sorry I know this forum is not for techniacl threads but can\'t find the correct one.
welcome aboard :D
1 - the window swithces do not light up
2 - neither does the mirror switch
3 - leather door cards ... errrrrrrrr not on the later models - i think they came on the cabs ( as did the leather seats )
hope this helps
stu
Thanks for that Stu, I couldn\'t remember with they lit up or not saves me trying to search the work shop manual to try and get them to work! :Laugh
The seller said that the leather seats/door cards are orginal maybe it was an option back then.
This is my forth EGi and it\'s one of the best ones if I\'ve seen. It has the usual faded red but that\'s easily sorted with some G3 and a bit of elbow grease, the alloys are mint and there are no dents/rust anywhere on the body work. Think I got a bargain. Who knows I may actually keep this one!:Laugh
it might have been an option - not sure to be honest
Is it not an import? I thought they stopped selling the egi in the UK with the series 4. I was under the impression the only series 5 cars in the country are Turbo II\'s.
No it\'s not an import as far as I\'m aware i\'ve checked the spec with that of the workshop manual and it is uk spec. Nothing on the log book/documents to suggest otherwise. It was registered on 01/08/89!
im sure i have seen some UK EGI\'s kicking around - pretty rare though
im not sure if you can tell with the chassis number or not ???
the V5 would confirm this though
I have got the V5. It doesn\'t state it has been imported. The Vin number begins JMZFC and the engine number 13BE084056.
sounds like a UK one then
There were two versions of the EGi in the UK.
The early car (upto the middle of 1988) had no power steering and a boot lip spoiler.
The later car (Latter half of 1988-) had a wrap around rear spoiler and power steering.
Hope that helps :wave

If it\'s a 13 digit VIN number then it\'s a uk car (I think it\'s thirteen anyhoo - must go and check mine)
Just checked - it\'s 17 digits for UK car.
Look\'s like I have stumbled accross quite a rare version of the EGi then. Mine has the full leather interior, colour coded rap around spoiler and has power steering. It\'s only done 63000 miles too. I think this one will be a "keeper" now. Got a gew jobs that need doing on it. Rear exhausts could do with replacing as they are quite corroded, the transmission seams very noisey could be the thrust bearing and/or clutch. Going to replace the clock/warning display as it seams to have a mind of it\'s own and maybe a set of new discs and pads. Also a good alarm system. It\'s got a long MOT so nothing urgent just as and when funds allow.
Sorry - just ammended the post - 17 digits for a uk registered car
It is 17 digit VIN number.
now pics are a must !:cheers
It was quite common for people to add TII parts onto the Egi\'s to make them look a bit more upto date. I remember seeing a red EGi for sale recently with TII bits - think it was on Piston heads?
That may well be the case Brett. I\'ll get some pictures tomorrow. The leather is but cracked on the drivers seat so will have a go at doing something about that. Also the red paint is a bit faded so if the weather is ok tomorrow i\'ll have a go at that with some G3 and wax.
Faded red paint cured with a some G3 and Mer polish. Got a few swirls now though so will have ago with some colour T Cut. Still got some electrical gremlins. 1) The instument lights blink when cold then go off after about 5 mins after about 10 mins they come on again dim and gradually get brighter! 2) Sometimes the clock will go very dim and the rear fog light symbol illuminates. Could these be a dogey relay?
I have started running this on pre mix and it really does make a differance.
Finally got some pictures of my FC.

Does anyone know how I can get access to a ramp? I don\'t really want to pay a garage for jobs I can do my self!
looking at the pics , you have an EGI with a T2 spoiler and T2 Cab ( UK ) seats
yours is defo a S4 - you can tell by the front bumper and the tail lights
Thanks for that Grinder I\'ll change my profile now. I bought the car of a chap in Kent who had it for a year or so he said he hadn\'t modified it and the other two keepers were both women. Could this of been a demo car I wonder? It was registered on 01/08/89. Seams a lot of expense to put TII seats, door cards and spoiler on. You might as well buy a TII! I thought the lights were a series 4 (what little I know!)
I am new to RX7\'s so stand to be corrected, but I don\'t think the seats come from a T2 UK Cab as your front seats have the adjustable lumber support that my UK cab does not have and obviously there are no rear seats in the Cab.
Could it be that your car as a late series 4 was fitted with the optional series 5 leather interior in an attempt to sell of the remaining stock of series 4 cars?
John
Could be. . . The seats look different to the ones fitted to the TII. The back seats are leather too. They look the same shape as previous series 4\'s I have had in the past. The only difference is that they are leather. Problem with a 18 year old year car is knowing the history you can only go by what the previous owners have told you.
unless they have been recovered at some point ??
Those are series 4 leather seats, They always seem to be grey on the S4\'s as an option.
I bet that cost a few quid when it was new! Look nice though first series 4 EGI I have seen with them in.
ive got an egi and exactly the same electrical fog light issue.
have you managed to get it sorted?
all the other lights my idiot clock are fine, but the fog is faint and if you actually switch on the fog light the clock dissapears.
is a really annoying problem.
i have tried a second idiot clock and it done the same thing, so it cant be the idiot clock itself.
No not yet. I don\'t get any indications at all when put they key in apart from the handbrake warning light and the door adjar warning light if the door is open. The fog light problem is intermittent. Some days it will play up others it won\'t. I have checked all the fuses. It could be a relay as I think there is one behind the idiot clock.
When i removed the idiot clock, couldnt really see a relay staring at me, although wasnt really looking for one, just thought the idiot clock was dodgy itself.
through trying a second unit, its clear that its on the car and not the unit itself.
hopefully the dashboard hasnt got to come off, there isnt alot of slack on the plug so imagine everything is quite tightly arranged.
(have posted in technical aswell)
Could be earting out in the rear light cluster maybe - as the fog indicator is wired to the lights circuit and the wiring is not brilliant.
Does the indicator work correctly when you switch the fog light on ? Does the fog light actually work ?
the rear earth point for the fog light wouldnt be in the left hand sideof the boot as your looking in it would it.
i think i just used the full capacity of my brain to work something out......
my amp hasnt been working recently, and i still havent worked out why. i was intending on checking the entire wiring fron front to back for any breaks / exposed wire etc.
in turn i have pulled the fuse out of the permenent live amp wire from the battery.
my earth for the amp in the boot is connected onto and existing earth (potentially the rear fog light earth), in order to not create another hole, and the earth wire being a bit chunky may be touching metal that isnt bare (painted).
Due to the amp not being powered at the moment, it isnt using the earth, and maybe this is causing the fog light earth to not earth out because there on the same earth point.
?????
That was hard work.
:cheers
Working with torch and camping latern outside; i took the amp wire off of the same point that the fog light earth is on, wrapped electrical tape around the crimped part of the earth wire and re-attached.
intermittent earthing problem solved, hopefully! havent drove the car since i done it so hoping there is no loose connection on the idiot clock itself.
re-earthed the amp and switched on..... wasn\'t having none of it. the protect light come on and didn\'t work.
changed for a spare amp i had and it works fine now.
figured that double earthing may have killed the old amp off!
Another couple of issues sorted, persistance and patience wins.
Blimey a simple thing like that was the cause of the problem! I\'ll have a look at mine tomorrow. I wasn\'t looking forward to taking the dash apart to solve this problem. Thanks for the advice Prof and thanks for the info Mats Gen 2

Yes it does.
Problem sorted. Now the blinking dash lights!
i thought i had sorted mine, but i still get an intermittent fog light, theres got to be an earth somewhere behind the unit in the dash or ive got a loose connection
So far I have not had any further problems. I took the earth off and sanded the paint down to bare metal and re connected the earth and made sure it was really tight.
is this the earths in the boot that you re-earthed?
there has to be one behind the unit somewhere, this is where mine is causing problems, with a small / bang on the dash the light will go out then it will slowly come back.
Yes it was the one in the boot on the left hand side by the rear light cluster. I just removed the carpet and there was a wire bolted onto the metal which i assumed was some kind of earth. It seams to of done the trick at the moment.

ok brett my 1988 car has power stearing and the wrap around spoiler are there any other yays of making sure is the later egi?? from the power of mine im guessing its the later one as i can keep up with mk3 vr6\'s and preludes and whip mr2\'s, mine is f reg unfotunatly is reg mid 1988, would be nice if was the later one!
I had an \'E\' reg and an \'F\' reg - both were good cars - if I ahd the money and the space I would start again with another EGi and really go mental on the porting :D
well if i keep her which i prob will as there is so little rust as its been garaged most of her life when not used, i was thinking of having her street ported as when i spoke to rotortecnics they said bridge porting is good but not for every day use too much better for track use with some road use in mind!
so was thinking of doing a e-manage ultima euc upgrade, later spec egi hight reving racing rototrs that have 3mm carbon apex seals and a carb or tb change or just upgrading to the later spec egi rotors and adding a supercharger!
Update- Some a**s has tried to break in to my car and bent the passenger door right out! Has anyone got a spare passenger door? I don\'t think it\'s repairable.
i have a gun if that helps??
your joking matey - thats terrible news
you will prob get on off ebay
I know, I bought this one to keep as i am fed up of changing cars. I have never had a car that someone has attempted to break into before. I can\'t understand why tahey tried to force the door open, surely it would of been easier to smash the glass! Thank goodness they didn\'t get in. I have managed to bend the door back in with a rubber mallet for the moment. It\'s not a perfect fit but at least it\'s water tight. Just got a few dents to sort out on the door and try and get the door to fit flush now. Can anyone recommend a decent body work place?
