Title: My motors snapped a tip
Post by: bobert on September 19, 2007, 07:57:33 AM
O yes its happened again.
I left my girlfriend’s house last night and I thought I would go out for a play for a play in my rex, after a bit I got board of driving @ .80 bar so I turned the boost up to 1.2. It all seemed good, the car was pulling hard and I was havin fun until I nailed it hard out of a corner and then it just died.
It was like someone had just flicked a switch and killed all my fun, I am 99% shore it’s snapped a tip and I will confirm this when I get home tonight.
I am gutted because the car was for sale.

850cc primaries & 1600cc secondarys

I have not had it mapped above .80 bar. And I was running at 1.2-1.3 last night, my fault really I should of bought wide band then I would of known my a/f/r’s.
I’m shore its ran lean.
O well these things happen, the engine is coming out tonight.

its bad news its happened again,  but running 1.2 bar is risky enough but doing it without it being mapped is bound to end in tears.   1.2 is fine for the drag strip but constant use at that boost on pump gas and it wont last long.

I wouldnt run mine at only 0.9 until it was mapped when i changed the i/c, its just too risky with a rotary, you dont get a second chance like you would with a piston engine. First sign of det and its usually dead!

the engine is out.
i had a look through the exhaust port and one of the front rotor tips is missing its also made a mess if the rotor.
i am going to strip it down tonight to find out the real damage.:mmmm

yep
I didn’t want to push the boost past @ .08 bar after the rebuild, I haven’t been back on the dyno from then and I didn’t buy wide band.
Anyway I’m going half bridge :yes

you areeee crazzzzzyy dude lol
If you going to go half bridge make sure you put a bigger rear exhaust housing on your turbo thats what killed my engine this time tooooo much heat build up due to my rear A\\R being too small for my half bridge

I stripped the engine down last night and I haven’t got away lightly:Grrr .
All three tips are chewed up, the housing is fooked and so is the rotor.

I’m now on the look out for some parts

Yes, as I supply them, but like some that like to keep there tuning tips and parts secret, I wont ever tell as a supplier, but Im sure they will come forward if they wish. One or 2 will be on my site soon in its PTS hall of fame

well done chap, its amazing what you can do in such a short time.  Fantastic effort on pulling the engine and getting it stripped that quickly, just take yer time on rebuild and hopefully ready for the Pod.  My car was away 2-3 weeks getting a rebuild, mind you think he went to japan to get all the bits, had a holiday while he was there and then panicked for the last two days !!! lol

so if these tips dont break does it make the engine indestructable from detonation?,  what do they do if they dont break?  warp?

the way i understand it is the yes, they warp/twist instead of shatter or chip.

a few pics of \' unbreakable tips\' in the link below

here is PTS Website, PROs if it does what it says on the tin then they look good CONs they are pricy but cheaper then Ceramics

http://www.performancetestedseals.com/

Also you HAVE to use premix with these seals
Title: My motors snapped a tip
Post by: antnicuk on September 28, 2007, 11:53:07 AM
so if they warp the engine still needs rebuilding but they wont damage your turbo or housings??

I didnt think they were that expensive,  circa £500 a set
Title: My motors snapped a tip
Post by: BlitzBoy on September 28, 2007, 12:04:27 PM
yes thats what they guarantee, I suppose if they do bow or bend and you are able to bend them back and re use them then it will work out cheaper
Title: My motors snapped a tip
Post by: banned advertiser on September 28, 2007, 12:05:48 PM
more like £565 plus shipping and duty

you can get cheaper versions if you shop around. they are pretty much the same.  made out of the same/similar metal.

All is well.
I took the car home tonight and everything seems well, ive just got to run it in now.
Easier said than done for me I am afraid I get a little pedal happy, ive just got to be sensible and stay off the gas, all will be well after 500 miles though.
Here are some pics of the rebuild.
Its great to get back in her again

Good times kash, it’s so addictive isn’t it?
Think I might go to the night event in November at pod.

I’m buying wide band and an egt gauge, im going to try and borrow datalogit to make a few adjustments,
I’ve just got to run her in first
