EDIT:Oops, wrong place...very sorry...
Hi there! First post after a long time reading the forums! :Giggle
Just would like some advice as i\'m going to become a new owner sometime :cool
After looking for a while for a rex, I have come across this example:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/208569.htm (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/208569.htm)
1)I\'m just curious whether the high chassis mileage is a problem?
2)What is common to go wrong (apart from the engine that has been rebuilt)?
3)Generally, how long do the turbo\'s "last" before needing an overhaule?
4)And lastly, for a compression test, is it advisable to take the car to Mazda for this? Would be easier for me...
(since they [supposedly] have good knowledge of the rotary since the rx-8?...)
Sorry for the long-winded post!
ANY comments are welcome!
Thanks!
Jon
ps, If anyone has a good condition, UK spec, standard, (or that can be standard without much fuss) rex for sale, maxish...7k. (I\'m not sure if this is a good figure however. :xconfused:2Confused)Let me know :)
generally speaking chassis age is not an issue the only real thing is age and miles on engine
rest of car is like any car for wear and tear
dont touch a car that hasnt had a recent rebuild or is priced accordingly to compensate for a rebuild
rebuild done by a good tuner can last up to 50000 miles but done by a bad tuner might last u round the block
turbos are tricky as often its not the turbo but the rats nest controlling the turbo
compression test take it to ur nearest specialist
dont buy one of these cars unless u have spare cash because it will eat money like a locust
I\'ve bought mine with just over 100.000 miles on it, and by my experience, you\'d have to change some bushes (including pillowbal bushes) and in my case, the powerplant frame as it\'s cracked, the ARB mounts, and the shocks.
Good luck with it and enjoy a wonderful car.
Thanks for the advice both! :Thumbs-up
Been in touch with him today,turbo\'s have not been done, but rebuild consisted of main unit, and hoses.
Is a compression test easy enough to do by yourself? I\'m quite new to these engines...but willing to learn about them :)
Would you suggest looking for a lower overall mileage model or go and have a look?
Replacing the suspension components seems a great idea...although it would add to a few thousand I would imagine...if I sorted the suspension out with new bushes, dampers, and anything else...what would be the next worry in your opinion?
Sorry for the load of Qs! Just wan\'t to find a good one.
Jon
UK cars have rust issues if they have seen the winter roads. Be wary !!
dont buy cheap unless u are very handywith a spanner
go for the lowest mlge one u can afford and if poss a rebuilt one as well
Well, you could buy "cheap" (£2500-£4000) and budget for a rebuild and a look over, you could buy "expensive" (£9000-£**000 from somebody in this forum that loved his car and have a worries free engine, or you could buy a "inbetween" (£4000-£8000) and trust your luck. Personally, I\'ve be verrrrrry careful with a newly rebuild engine, a couple of failures in rebuilds engines as of late, and check that the owner of the car (if he is in a forum) doesn\'t swear every time he talks about his car.
It took me a year to find mine, and when I\'ve found it, didn\'t had the money, so I sold my old car for peanuts, in a hurry to buy my dream car.
Good luck.
Thanks all for the extra info!
Still quite torn between whether the car is worth it. (One in the link I mean...rx7 is DEFO worth every penny from what I hear :D:driving)
Is it reasonably priced in your opinion? I know theres not much to go on until I see it...
Where are the usual suspects for rust on UK cars? And what should I look for when inpecting?
Thanks alot! Your all so helpful :chat:cool (Not being sarcastic)
Jon
Jon,
I have a \'92 UK car and looks in similar condition to the one in the link... First thing i had to change when i got mine was suspension due to rust eating the springs away, however i knew the previous owners of the car and knew it had been looked after and not very often driven in the wet and never on salty roads....
Check sills, and whether the car has been undercoated recently or ever ?
UK Cars are quite rare still and especially standard (ish) ones
Have you spoke to the guy on pistonheads regarding the rebuild?
As his advert states "new engine from mazda"
Does he mean rebuilt at a mazda dealer? In my experiance even mazda dealers aren\'t exactlly bursting with knowledge when it comes to RX7\'s
I spoke to him, but now you mention it, I will ask again to see if it was replaced and not rebuilt...I should ask what the receipt said.
He told me the previous owner rebuilt/replaced engine, all the hoses were replaced...turbo\'s were not touched however.
I know about how "professional" Mazda is with rx-7s.
If only somewhere like WGT rebuilt it with warranty...:2Rolleyes
Is there any other way to check the health of an engine without a compression test?
Thanks for your input :Thumbs-up
Jon
Double post...
Lum,
Just spoke to him again, he says that as far as he knows, its a brand new unit, stated on the receipt.
Car has never been undercoated since new though...thats not good...
Are vehical inspection checks any good? I mean, with rx7s?
Thanks again all! :god:Thumbs-up
Jon
Just thought I should let you guys know...
Car is a Cat C writeoff. Damage was to the front left. Bonnet and fender replaced and jigged to appear fine. Suspension was damaged too, the wishbones and some other parts...kinda lost interest by this point.
Just a warning if anyone wanted to view the car.
Thanks for all your help guys! Truly a great club :King:yes
Will be a rx-7 owner yet!
