Title: Noob asking about v8\'s
Post by: tucky on September 16, 2007, 09:17:51 PM
Just like to say hello ,noob on here.  If I\'ve missed out the meet and greet section please accept my appologies.

I\'m looking at putting a v8 in to a  fd, please don\'t shoot me down, it\'s something I\'ve fancied doing for a while.

Some questions to start with, I\'m looking at two engines the toyota 1uz-fe and the chevy ls1.  Has anyone this side of the states done this conversion?  Will the 1uz fit in the engine bay with it being a dohc?  If I go 1uz will it mate up with the fd\'s gearbox if I have a bell housing adaptor made?

Thanks in advance

Phil.

a 1uze motor will probably fit but they have little torque, but i do belive they respond well to s,charging ,but you cant beat cubes !! i have done a few ls1 conversions from 5.7 to my own with a 7litre,they fit well and make a great car you can allways come and have a look at one if you like cheers craig 01217530415,be warned if you go in one you will want one ask stylus350 !!

I\'ll jump in here with what I know until Craig answers. The FD puts out a 4 cylinder signal to the rev counter and guess what, so does the LS1 (standard ECU) so no problem there. The speedo can be fixed either by fitting an adjustable aftermarket electronic one or by getting an adjustable speedometer interface such as this one: http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=126/category_id=287/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd126.htm

Just a random question - with the LS1 route are we talking EFI or carbs?

Is the reason for not looking at LS7 engines the price?

EFI.

re the LS7, yes the price but also they are dry sumped which would add to your problems finding a place for the tank etc.

At the moment it seems a better bet to spend the cash saved on tuning the LS1 or LS2

Remove ABS, bloody great empty space :)

Thanks for the info, very interesting for sure!

I can get a 800hp Chevy engine in ally for about $13k.....they are not expensive!  Standard crate engine with about 500bhp is only $4k  bit heavier though as it will be an iron block!

You might need more space than that, not sure how big the LS7 tank is, but I had a dry sumped Caterham 7 and the tank for that was huge! (technical term)
Or another option is to use the LS7 but wet sump it, which is what has been done by at least one guy in the US.

the speedo and rev counter do work, there are big power chevys out there but 800hp would take some work, the problem is not necessary getting big power but making good power the iron sbc(small block chevy) is old hat now but do produce power(and cheap).most people use a ls based motor because of there all round package, cheapish, weight, size, avalibility, and the tuneability.you can as i did buy a ls1 and tune it or stroker kit or ls2 or ls7 they all fit the same (ls7 is longer) the ls7 is not worth the price difference as a ls1,ls2 with a cam and good heads will do 500bhp.they are very reliable and you would not believe how good they are on fuel.they use a composite intake with modern fueling roller cams etc.i use after market engine managent for the flexibility and for future mods but you can use the oe set up.i dont use hinson kits i do my own,i mount the motor to the chassis rails where the metal is stronger (hinson has had lots of problems with his subframes cracking),ithere is the rear diff mount to take into account there is different ways of doing this as well some use a type of power frame but with a gearbox mount ,i did this on my own car first but it is not a good idea as it pushes and pulls the engine about + axle tramp can be a problem(as with a std car).i now mount the diff to the rear suspension pickup point where there is the most strenght, the thing with a v8 car as apposed to a rotary is a very smooth power curve and very flat torque curve even mine with a big cam will pull 6th from 600rpm and makes 500ftlb at 2200rpm which makes it a lasy drive compared to a turbo car,ive been in big power rotarys(stylus350s) but the power is so far up the rev range it makes it hard to play up in them but it was fast when it got there !.

tinker, what sort of prices do you quote for this conversion? I know this will depend on the engine used, but, say for example, an LS1 engine tuned to approx 500BHP. Do you supply a drive in, drive out price and how long does the conversion normally take?

If you’re a crap passenger like me take some spare pants :Thumbs-up

It\'s not just that it fits so well, goes well, sounds the nuts and returns a very healthy MPG but the amount of thought and development Craig has put into it. A good example is the diff brace, where he has tried many different avenues and materials ending up with a very well engineered solution that adds no vibration or noise and even adds rigidity to the shell.

He wanted for himself a car that hit all the right buttons and was a genuine daily driver with no typical \'high tuned\' car drawbacks. He has achieved this for himself and I think that is why it is such a thorough package - money or business was never his original intention but the result has been so successful that people started to approach him to do the same thing for them, and, seeing as though he owns a garage......

Jesus! I should be his bl00dy PR!! LOL.

Edited to add - still love the amazing Rotary. I know for many the car is not complete without a Rotary and I have absolute respect and understanding of this.
