Title: Servicing Schedule - What is it?
Post by: N777CK T on September 13, 2007, 05:36:07 PM
I\'ve had the car for about 4,000 miles now and at 3,000 I did an engine oil change... I\'ve heard a few horror stories from rx7 garages so would like to try servicing the car myself as I\'ve done a mechanics course a few years ago...

But i don\'t know what needs to be changed or when???

obviously i know the engine oil every 3,000 miles but what else is there?
are these right?

engine oil + filter 3k
spark plugs 3k
coolant 8k
diff oil 8k

any help appreciated! nick.

What are you planning on doing with the car???  Are you planning on running trackdays every week/month?

If you are doing this yourself, then you don\'t need to change these items this frequently.

What oil are you using?  Is it a standard car??  If you are running a mineral oil it will break down if the temps are getting overly high, but I doubt they are so the oil should be good for 4500 miles.  The filter, if you are feeling tight would be good for every other change.

Spark plugs, if you are running quality ones, will end up costing you a fortune!!  They should be good for 20,000 miles.

Coolant, once again change that once a year.

Diff oil.....oh my, every 3 years.

Good luck

ok thanks for that! helped me out a lot... anyone else think of anything missed out?
i\'ve never been to a trackday yet...! At the moment its my only car and so used to go to work so i can finishing paying back the damn thing! :P
I think it\'s standard but I\'m the first owner in the UK?
I\'m using mineral oil because I havent decided on a Synthetic and if it lasts 4,500 miles then thats good enough for me cos i will easily change it every 3k.

Filter - I\'m not that tight! How would i end up with an RX7 if i was :P

so to shortlist it for reference...

Engine Oil + Filter - 3,000 - 4,500 miles
Fuel Filter           - 15,000 miles
Spark Plugs         - 20,000 miles
Coolant              - 1 change every year
Diff Oil                - every 3 years

Its not a case of being tight really...its just unnecessary, and think of the environment!!!  Your Carbon Footprint will halve by skipping every oil change ;)

The other things you have forgotten are brakes, fluid needs to be changed because of water ingress, think about the pads too.

Gearbox oil, should change that, good indication as to the state of the box!!

What else...
tyres-between 120 miles and 10000 miles
emptying the ash tray....not sure on the mileage on this one, I took mine out!
Fuel, should be able to get 600 miles from a tank?
Windscreen washer fluid

General check for any hoses which look old and brittle & also check your pully belts for cracks or if they need tightening?

450 miles from a full tank.    GOD, you really do drive like a girl when not on the track :rollin :rollin

all iv got on mine now is the r-magic cat back and it still only gets 18mpg
even if i take my time its still pants it seems to do worse when i do go slow, but when i igo really fast, wow it uses its gasoline, i think mazda sourced the fuel pump from the fire service, and the fuel return hasnt been used yet the inside of the pipe is like new lol
as for serviceing i do
oil n filter every 3k
plugs every 20-25
air filter 15-20
fuel filter 15-20
diff and box i changed when i got it, and tbh changing them any more frequent that 40-50k in a normal road car is a bit pointless
tyres and petrol i seem to have to buy it daily lol

There are some strange answers on here.
Plugs are every 6000 miles for a stock car.
Oil and filter is every 3000miles,but can be done more often if you are so inclined as there is allways a residual amount of oil left in coolers and sump.
If you are running higher boost than stock then plugs might not last as long, and for really high boost say over 1bar you need colder plugs too.
Gearbox oil last\'s years as does diff, depends on age and mileage more than a service interval, but it does not hurt to them for peace of mind.

Carl

its odd that oil and filter is changed so often on an engine that dont have big ends mains ect
as to the plugs every 6k that cant be right, il ring our denso rep on monday to see what he can find out about them

The rotary chews plugs up and spits them out like no other car.
If you run longer than 6000 miles then the car get\'s misfires especially if you drive the car as it should be driven.
The reason the plugs get used up so quick is that unlike a piston engine they do alot more work, they are look after 3 chambers that in each rotor are firing once every revolution,on a piston the plugs fire very second revolution.
If the rotary did that then you would get a quench phase that cooled them a little and half the firings per mile so at least 12,000 mile capabilty, but we don\'t.
RX8\'s are a different story mainly due to plug type and being nonturbo.

Carl

Regarding oil,
It is used to cool the rotors in the engine which means that it is an important component to be in top condition and full too,1/3rd of all cooling in the Mazda rotary is done by the oil.

Plus I\'d imagine with oil, it comes back to the old synth\'s vs. minerals. *IF* you go against the norm and run race spec fully synths then the oil WILL last a lot longer...

...But if it\'s just mineral gear then 3000 miles and it\'s gonan of done a lot of work.
