Title: Finally Back on the road after 18 months....
Post by: Kevin on September 13, 2007, 10:48:04 AM
Well after 18 months wait and 5 grand bill I finally got my car back from pip the other week after it being off the road since march 2006.  Got a few questions now thou:

1.) Cause the car originally blew a water seal im paranoid about temps.  I took it out this morning to work and took a detour to mc donalds drive through.... now while sat in the cue the water temp reading on my powerFC started to rise from about 87 degrees to 95/6.... then I pressume the fans kicked in and it knocked it down to 89.  This happend a few times in the course of waiting, but leaving mc donalds the temp went up to 99 degrees, then driving back to work dropped down to 88 degrees within quarter of a mile.

At what sort of limit should I start to worry, or am I just being over the top.  Forgot to mention the car has a brand new koyo radiator on it aswell.

2.) I\'ve had an uprated clutch put in as my old one was 70% worn, the clutch is fine except if you dont give it enough rev\'s it chatters a little.... is this normal for an uprated clutch, I think it\'s an excedy? model?

3.) I\'ve got to take it back to pip for a service after a month, but incase it runs low on oil will just normal castrol gtx do?  not an synthetic stuff?

4.) If it runs abit low on coolant can I just top up with normal water?... the coolant in it at the moment looks like a red jelly mixture.

5.) Any do\'s or dont\'s I should now about other than not to take it over 4K for the first 1000 miles or so?

6.) Finally the car back fires quite alot when changing gear, on nearly every gear change, is this due to a rich base map on the powerFC?  I know when I first drove the car back from the docks 18 months ago it was popping and farting on every gear change with the standard ecu.

Other than that im enjoying having the car back, hopefully it should be registered today! :Thumbsup!

Any help would be great cheers guys. :D

Running in traffic will cause the engine to get hot....99 isn’t too hot, the engine is pressurised so 100 deg\'s wont be the actual boiling point.  If the fans are cutting in, and taking it back down to 84 that’s fine.....I see 104 on track, usually chuck the fans on before then and it takes it back to high 80\'s or low 90\'s

So I wouldn’t worry too much about that....but I would worry about why you felt the need to go to McDonalds!!!! :o

You need to bed the clutch in, if it is still doing it in 1000 miles then question the problem

Phone Pip and ask him what oil he is using.....then use the same

No you want to use a coolant....Halfrauds do a good one, but ask Pip what he recommends

The basic map is probably airing on the side of caution so hence mapped a little rich....if nothing else it gets you noticed....that will be ironed out when you get back on the rollers.

Don’t do all of the miles on a motorway....spend time rolling on and off the throttle in 5th, you need to give different loadings on the engine to bed everything in, rather than stick it on bricks with a brick on the throttle pedal!!!

Enjoy :D

Thanks, thought i was being abit over cautious.  Is there a way to set what temp the fans kick in on the pfc?

I\'ve got a 7 week old baby who eats for england, unfortunately I dont get much chance to eat myself having to feed him all the time so grabbing the odd mc donalds is a luxary! :D lol.

Thought it may need bedding in, to be honest i\'ve put about 100km on it so far and it does seem like its getting better.  I\'ll just keep my eye on it.

It\'s not my main car, so im only doing back and forth trips to work, shops, gym etc.   It\'s only seen a motorway on the way back from pips and that was only 30 miles.  I was told a while ago not to do all motorway miles.

As Atomic says, coolant is pressurized, so boiling point is at about 120 degrees C. Start get concerned if you see temps at 110 or higher. Switch off regardless of where you are if you see anything above that i reckon.

The temps the fans come on at and switch off at can be adjusted. If you\'d like the temps to not be quite as hot, you could ask Pip to lower them a bit. Mine have been altered so i never see above 90, unless i am really pushing her on a hot day!
