I\'ve just Blown my motor Again!!! so in two years this will be its Third rebuild.
I\'m a little bit to ****ed off to have a proper look at it but i think the Fuel pump has got a part to play in this because this was week i had some issues starting it then i developed an intermittent mis fire under WOT and its been a bit louder than usall, i went to Tesco\'s today and it went as i pulled onto a Duel carriageway near my house and it as soon as i floored it in second it went.
So now i have two FD\'s both with Dead motors Arn\'t i lucky.....
I\'m going to get very drunk i think and sulk.
oh crap :(
I guess my PM to you just now was...err...proper **** timing :(
its not a walbro perchance is it?
Bloody hell chris - thats not good at all matey
i feel for ya buddy
Quote from: one2watchits not a walbro perchance is it?
explain ???
ive got a walbro here which i suspect to be playing up and causing a misfire....
are they known for problems?? only i got one in my rx.
no its a Apexi Bnr pump.
This thing hates me... The thing that really gets on my nerves i\'ve had nothing but problems with it since buying it and the car i had lined up originally was a Supra twin turbo (which my sister bought) that has not gone wrong once not even a flat tyre, she drives it as an every day car and she loves it. Mine spits its dummy going to the shops :(
Quote from: t2reware they known for problems?? only i got one in my rx.
well the fuel pump is what ive narrowed it down to...and it is a walbro.
Ive seen another walbro cause an engine failure (thats seen myself...not forum rumours!:Typing ) and i know of another engine from a guy on here which apparently failed due to a walbro (tuners explanation...so may not be true!)
Chris: feel for you dude :( Im wishing i bought a supra originally too! thats why im getting out of this rx7 game till i have a bottomless pit of money...its still a crippler even if you do the work yourself)
Quote from: t2reware they known for problems?? only i got one in my rx.
Yep...
I was told they are not very reliable hence why i bought a £300 Apexi :(
Quote from: GrizzlyI\'ve just Blown my motor Again!!! so in two years this will be its Third rebuild
boo hoo poor grizzly
let me make you feel better. my statment woud read like this
SO THIS YEAR THIS WILL BE THE THIRD REBUILD
i origanally was going to get a lotus esprit turbo but i was told they are un reliable, what a f"king laugh
It does beg the Question why do we bother!!!
I got an Idea for the Forum, We could have a part of the Forum where you could go and swear at you Rx7 :)
the cost of an engine transplant is what holds me back. not many engines inspire. meaning its going to have to be an big alloy V8 or nothing. this rebiuld i should be able to do for about 500 quid compaired to a ls1 costing maybe 4 or 5k
when my car works it makes me want to keep it but then 500 miles later i want to smash the engine to peices with a sledge hammer.
im thinking of making apex seals out of bolsa wood because it must be stronger than what mazda use.:spank
Quote from: t2rewwhen my car works it makes me want to keep it but then 500 miles later i want to smash the engine to peices with a sledge hammer.
that sums the rotary up quite well.
Treat it like a slag, and it\'ll last forever!!
your obviosly using you car for sumit we\'re not. i prefere to drive my car

^ No comment.... ;) :Thumbs-up
Jeeeeeezz Dom, I nearly fell asleep and crashed your sofa when i borrowed it at the pod! ;) Nice car though...
trex tempting fate :Nono!
Good evening mr mod.....

Eh ????
Unlucky chap, and yep rotaries you either love em or hate em
Feel for you mate, hope some good comes out of the situation ?
sorry to read that matey you must wanna kick the little fds teeth in by now :(
I was anti rotary all my years, and my experience goes far, (brought up in an Auto-garage environment from a walking age to being a qualified Engineer to the highest degree now) Then 3 yrs ago I accidentally got involved with the Rotor game, owned them all and done them all from top to bottom in that time... yes I fell in love with and enjoyed the experience, but my opinion has not changed...
The Rotary engine is sh1te and is a disposable engine!

You are just a wissy D,you dont like to get your hands dirty  in actual fact you are a bit girly with a Supra for a penis :yes
My second rebuild is running as smooth as a shaven f****.
Maybe i\'m lucky, but any performance car, whether ****ed-on or Wankelled, has a life expectancy.
Jy is vol kak.........
Rotarys suck arse.... lol :WaveBye
No, they suck fuel!!...and fuel ain\'t brown!!!:2Confused
A shame as you started the "Who wins" thread................
Steady on and lighten up doc....
It\'s 1:30 am Sunday morning, have a drink and go to bed...
Look Era the grave robber has already gone in, probably best he stayed up instead of going back to bed though, as he\'ll only wet it again......
hehehehahahahhehehehahahahhehehehahahah.........................:Laugh
Seeing though you\'ve now got two dead FD\'s is one going to become available :bandit
Absolute shame aswell :(

but surely its not 6 months. it drinks your money when it works then....
mine has had 2 rebuilds and only covered about 4000 miles in 3 years..if this bucket of **** ever goes again then i will wait and have a ls1 v8...looks wise the rx7 is a killer but these engines are made of tissue paper..never known a car that could blow so many engines for so many people
Lets see now, people dick around with fuel pumps, change the ecu, put in single turbo, change the exhaust, etc....
and then when it breaks, its the Rotary engine thats cr4p, eh?
well in my case i didnt dick around with anything all work was undertaken by and under advice from a known rotary tuner
my point is there is an alarming amount of remedial work done on these cars and most people just want a car they can turn the key and drive instead of turn the key and pray
you have to admit if u were to do a survey of total cars in uk and then how many have been trouble free i think everyone wld be gasping
i had a p1 for 2 years and it was modded to 350bhp and it never missed a beat started bang on/low emmissions/good fuel consumption/went like stink

Been used as a daily driver for 18 months now, never had to top up the water,200ml of oil,fix exhaust, nearly as much horses as you are running,AND the water seals are not one piece !!!!!!!!:Thumbs-up ROTARIES RULE !Have only had ROTARY powered cars as daily drivers for the last 12 years....:wiggle
i bet you only use it for 2 miles a week to go and pick up you colostamy bag and heart tablets from the chemist :yes

Its a stonking great V8.......:guinness and they do not exceed 30mph as Im a nervous passenger........ how kind of the driver ?
hi chris you have my sympathy but having now experienced my first engine failure after owning 1st,2nd and 3rd generation rx7\'s which have been used in both formats being daily driver and as a 2nd car at which i think over the past 6-7 years have been extremely happy with the rotary engine it has been fine until now and if anyone would like to know i have lived on the isle of man in which everytime i took the rex out it was never a case of pottering around it was driven as it should be aswell as many trouble free trackdays and now a couple of trips to the ring so my point is i think the rotary is superb and would definitely say despite my 1st engine failure i am not going to say they are unreliable.
just my 2p worth
And yes i am missing my car already hehe:)
you could go on every car forum and see that they all have there fare share of probs. the more power the more probs, fair enough. but the rotary only takes the smallest thing to go wrong and youll end up taking the engine out for a rebuild.
ive resorted to putting luck stickers on my car and hanging a talasmen from the mirror to ward off evil spirits. :2Rolleyes
mazda must sell millions of engine parts world wide but they still charge silly money for the bits.
im too far in now but if i could turn back the clock, a rotor motor would not be in my garage :(
Quote from: hotstepper1973And yes i am missing my car already hehe:)
What happened Jon?
Steve
well in a nutshell pip suspects either a chipped or fractured apex seal so im in the process of trying to strip the bits off car so then get the engine out to rebuild it but i have a snag where my knowledge ends but hey see what happens.
Fancy shedding some light on this here process as you have done this before?
chris sorry for slight hijack.
No problem mate, pm\'ed you.

Fair point. I supposed any engine that has had a fair amount of tuning involved will die eventually. Im currently looking at ways to improve reliablity on my rex rather than trying to get the best quarter mile time.

Well yes they are as Trex says Disposable, they simply are too temprimental for any sort of power.
Don\'t get me wrong my car has lots of mods and there not just cheap bolt ons and it was set up by a pro. That said i\'ve had three Fd\'s now that have not seen 70k on the stock motor with No mods so theres a clue for you i supose.

You will proberly find you have started on the slippery slope, simply i find the Rotary needs to be hammered more than most other cars, i\'ve always had more problems when i\'ve been trying to save fuel rather than with some spare cash to burn.
Don\'t get me wrong there is allot going for the RX7 but luck is a Major part of owning one, take Adrian he had his car build from day 1 with no expence spared and towards the end when he sold up he went through 3 engines in a year?? all built and tuned by a well known builder, so i would say if you have to be prepared to rebuild your motor quite often if you are running anywhere near twice the stock hp (for example).
well i spent all day messing with it trying to find out why a motor with 2000 miles on it, all the fuel mods done etc etc went pop and the only thing i can find is there is 7 volts at the Pump at wot so i\'m guessing there is a Bad connection some where?? I guess you get these sorts of Faults with 14 year old wiring..
Hey at least i\'m getting good at running them in now :(
real sorry to hear of your pain...
I\'ve got to agree with oldone...
I have owned a 1993 UK spec RX7 FD for a year now. She is my only car and used as a daily driver. I bought her standard with 115k miles on her (rebuild 45k beforehand) and have since spent alot of money on her, not just performance and chassis tuning... but making her more reliable (mostly cooling and coolant control - and the necessary Apexi PFC) as a priority. Left as sequential twin turbocharger set-up, standard bodywork due to her being a UK spec. Service her to the recommended level. All work carried out by specialist. She runs better now than ever. Not a single problem. Never missed a beat. Never even flooded. Touch wood!
I have learned the BIG difference between the rotary and performance piston type engines. Both can be driven hard. A performance piston engine would rather NOT be driven hard, but will do without complaining. A rotary engine NEEDS to be driven hard and hates not being opened up fully during each run.
A story I heard from Pip... Two brothers. Two FD\'s. Both needed rebuilds. Both came to Pip for them. Both rebuilt to same specification. First brother was a lunatic driver, always drove his cars like he stole them - kept it as much above 3k as much as possible. The second was a very conservative driver, always drove conservatively - kept it below 3k as much as possible.
First brother\'s car went on to see a further 90k miles from rebuild. The second brother\'s car didn\'t even make it to 19k mile. When stripping the second brother\'s engine for rebuild... the rotor housings were so caked up in carbon that the apex seals were either shattered or seized and the rotor housings didn\'t look safe to re-use.
First brother\'s engine only failed due to water seal damage. The rotors, apex seals, housings were in top condition.
Rotary engine running lean = BAD NEWS.
The rotary engine is designed and tuned (even in standard form) to run rich, overfuel. More so when tuned with parts and mapped by specialists (who map them not only for performance but for reliability also). Hence why the low MPG readings and expense relating to fuel.
Another reason why when driving the rotary sensible compared to driving it hard - you won\'t see such a great difference in fuel consumption - against piston engines.
When driving sensibly... which isn\'t a problem for the majority of a trip... not all of the fuel is being burnt. The fuel that isn\'t being burnt is either being kicked out of the exhaust system (hence the BANG BANG POP when introduced to a hot tailpipe and air). The rest is either partially burnt or not and ends up forming carbon, which builds up on the rotor housing walls. When driving it hard, this build up is basiclaly cleared off of the walls. If left to build up, the deposits get thicker and thicker - harder and harder, until they obstruct the path of the apex seals - give you a guess at what happens then.
I always warm my car up, cool her down (not really that important) and drive her quite hard, and always open her up heavily once every trip. When I first got her... everytime I opened her up heavily...a cloud of crap was exhausted from my tail, the owner before me did push her every once in a while, but was pretty conservative. Pampered her. I caught her at the right time, as a few months later, I open her up... and nothing, clean as a whistle.
I also think alot of the problems people have are also due to the cars not being used as the daily driver - but a weekend or show car, etc. These cars love to be driven, hate to be stood. I have used mine nearly every day for the last year, averaging around 50 miles a day. Alot of the people needing rebuilds seem to be people that don\'t use the car as a daily or drive it conservatively. Obviously there are exceptions though such as poorly performed rebuilds, poor servicing, long servicing intervals, ancillary part failures and the like.
Just my 2p worth. Anyone got anything to add to that or disagree with?
The thing i have learnt in my years of owning Rotarys is don\'t tempt fate. i had just saved up a bit of cash to spend on more mods and BANG my motor goes, thats how it works for me.
I found years ago that the more you tweak a Rotary the more Unreliable it becomes, i guess that common sense really but i had a Stock T2 that i tried to blow up for four years (hammering it from cold and engine braking it of the rev counter etc) and that was the best Rotary i have owned for Reliability.
Nice write up by the way, was it aimed at me? or is it a General thing. The brother thing, I am No.1 but with 14 year old Fuel pump wiring i am led to believe.
