Title: WGT Alloy AST fitting concerns.
Post by: RemarkLima on September 06, 2007, 06:43:40 PM
Hey all,

Many thanks to one2watch for getting the AST over to me today, absolute brill! Really appreciated!

But I\'ve got a little concern, the lower and middle hose fittings on the AST are loose, so much so that I can pretty much pull them off by hand even with the clamps in place!

So do I;

Just a load of hylomar and cable ties to seal it?

Go get some jubilee clips of the right size (very small!) so I can get the hose on nice and tight?

Use tape to make the hose hold on tighter?

Or something else?

Ultimately I guess it\'ll be best to get some differnet hose that fits tightly, but the top one will be easy to change but I\'ll need to get mobile to change the bottom one!

Cheers all, I\'m all ears!
Mark

Try cutting a small section of hose off so that you are using a part that has not been on a spigot before,it should be tighter that way, there should be enough length to do that, and still use jubilee clips.
If the hose comes off when the engine is running then there must be another problem such as pressurisation from the block.
Regards
Carl

Ah, cool, cheers guys!

I just poped out and got some wee jubilee clips and they have made it really really tight now, can\'t rotate the hose at all...

Just going to the first test run! Wish me luck :D

And if a hose blows off I\'ll cry!!!

All good, no leaks from the AST, but still quite worried, as my old man keeps saying, the chances of 2 thing going bust at the same time are pretty slim!

When you turn off after a run should there be a hissing noise from the AST? I know it\'s a pressure thing and at that point it should pushing water into the expansion tank, then sucking back in right?

:(
i know on my old rebuilt engine, after a long run, youd hear a bubbling...not really a hissing. Having said all of this, you may as well carry on driving it..if it dies, it dies, there not much you can do about it!

Make sure you jubilee clip the WGT AST as the hoses are too big for the fitting - like you say. Mine when I first got it had a hose pop off causing my water seals to go!! :( They are jubille clipped on now!!

Make sure you check that the lines running to and from the AST tank are not twisted or compressed as this will cause added water pressure build up.

Cheers Ben,

There was no way the standard clamps were gonna hold the hoses on the AST so jubilee cliped nice and tight, after a good test run no leaks at all, so very good news!

However I\'m still loosing water somewhere and it\'s doing my head in :(

It\'s only when I shut down that the problem seems to happen, so I really don\'t know any more. As said above, may as well drive it and if it dies, it dies, c\'est la vie.

If you have alot of pressure in the system it may pay to get a higher pressure cap, look on the inside of the bonnet and you will be able to see marks/stains if any water has been coming out or indeed if your caps leak at pressure.

Surely a higher pressure cap is just masking the problem? Which could be a worse problem???

And at the moment, there\'s stains everywhere from the amount of coolant that\'s been pi$$ed everywhere over the past couple of weeks! D\'oh!

Just a thought really. I\'d clean up the mess and await new stains so you can see where the problem areas are.

The WGT cap can sometimes not seal correctly and it may take a few goes or opening and closing to get it to do so.

Yeah, does need a good clean up but I don\'t know if I\'m chasing ghosts!

The cap is on really tight! And checked the negative pressure valve and that\'s all good too.

How would I know if it\'s sealed OK???
