Title: Oil Cooler Upgrade
Post by: imebgo on September 05, 2007, 01:09:00 PM
Hi,

Im converting an auto to a single turbo and I am presented with a problem of only having enough room for a single oil cooler.

So, I would probably need to upgrade the oil cooler to something a bit larger.  I think the FD3S cooler has a thermostat in it, so I would need a thermostat, would something like:

http://www.driftworks.com/catalog/products/thermostatic-oil-cooler-sandwich-plate.html (http://www.driftworks.com/catalog/products/thermostatic-oil-cooler-sandwich-plate.html)

Do the trick, running it from the filter location, how would I eliminate the current pipes? Block them off, or connect them together?

Then I was looking at a new cooler:

or

http://www.driftworks.com/catalog/products/19-row-oil-cooler.html (http://www.driftworks.com/catalog/products/19-row-oil-cooler.html)

Would 19row be big enough?

Thanks, James

Why can\'t you get a manual conversion done at the same time ?

I can\'t imagine driving an RX7 with an auto box, ESPECIALLY with a big juicy turbo bolted on !!

Fair play.

I know of a Trust upgrade to the oil cooling, but I think that still uses 2 coolers, so prob not of any use to you.

We run a single oil cooler....get intouch and I can chat through the spec with you.  It all runs using -12 fittings, and keeps oil temps at a very acceptable level even out on track.

get a 20b cosmo oil cooler, they only use one and they nice and big but you could easily fit it in the stock slot.  RX Motors should have one.  Its got the stat built in also and the pipes may even fit.

Hmm the cosmo cooler could be a good idea as you can use the other hole in the bumper to feed cold air to the induction !!! Hmmmm.

hehe i do worry more about oil temps than water and air temps. incidentally, perhaps i\'m stoopid but i\'ve never understood why the water temps are usually higher than the oil temps - anyone know?

james,

what are you planning on doing with the car?    Mine had one cooler initially and it worked fine for road and track use.  It got a bit hot drifting but then what car doesnt.

Its very easy and much cheaper to convert to one cooler, no point doing it if you dont need to.  Just make sure its the passenger side one as the drivers one the twin set up is smaller.

If you go aftermarket , make sure the core you get can take the pressure of a rotary as the FD\'s run very high oil pressure compared to normal cars.

The filler neck stat will work fine
