Title: Removing stock spoiler?
Post by: probedb on September 03, 2007, 08:36:07 PM
Does anyone know how to get at the screws for the inner struts on the the standard 94 rear spoiler?

They\'re under the inner skin and i\'m not sure the best way to get at them?

Any thoughts?

Cheers :)

Paul.

Hi mate, I have just done this a few weeks ago.

You have to take all the plastic interior on the boot off, starting at the top of the window then the left and right, then the piece at the bottom.

Once you have all that off you can see all the nuts that need to come off and also undo the wiper motor to expose the other nut.

Wrote this up on another forum....

Sunday morning I decided it was time to see about removing the old spoiler and see what the condition was like underneath. The new spoiler doesnt cover all the holes and leaves 2 holes (1 each side) nearest the window exposed. The only way to get at the spoiler mounting bolts is by taking all this plastic off.......

So the first job is the bit nearest the top of the window, then the 2 sides:

then the bottom bit...

Next job was removing all the bolts, this was easy apart from the 2 in the centre ( the 2 that will be exposed !!). Basically there is a bolt coated in resin in the spoiler and there is a nut to undo on the underside of the boot. One of the nuts came off, but the other was so rusted up it ended up cracking the bolt off the spoiler so all it did was turn round and round. I tried all combinations using a variety of different tools but the blooming thing wouldnt come out. The only thing left to do....drastic I know was to cut the spoiler and see if I could hack out the bolt.....eek

However after some effort it came out and the spoiler was off....leaving me with this....

A close up of some of the bits under the spoiler...

As you can see there is loads of dirt so out came the sponge and claybar to remove as much of the marks as I could. The finished result was a tad disappointing...

Cheers matey. I\'m pretty sure there weren\'t as many holes in the metal skin on my car as there is on yours which is why I couldn\'t get at the holes. Will have to check again.

When i fitted my 99 spec spoiler, it used the 3 holes in the pic, but left the one nearest the window. To say i was ****ed off is an understatment:mad:

Then again, this is an excuse to fill the window wiper hole in now:wiggle

If its a stock spoiler its worth about bugger all, and you will probably end up cutting it off.

then try and use a dremil or similar, cut a groove into the bolt then use screw driver to hold bolt, while you use spanner on nut.

Cheers :) Having the Feed stuff and the stock spoiler is growing on me so I may just take it off the give the paint work a proper clean around the bottom of the spoiler but I\'ll see if I like the bare-arsed look!

Managed to do this today....too much crappy putty stuff left over to keep the spoiler off and the holes are somewhat rusted so a gromit just isn\'t going to work even temporarily. Spoiler is now back on tho...some new sticky pads and then I used clear sealant around the base of the spoiler so hopefully that should keep the water out but it\'s a damned site cleaner now....sorry forget to get photos!
