Title: Tunning Tips while engine is out..
Post by: leeroy_25 on September 02, 2007, 01:44:06 PM
Ok guy\'s perfect opportunity..
I am starting a project with a blank canvas.. Engine and box is out.. what tunning tips have you got for me.. Not sure If I wil be breaking open the engine yet.. So at the mo just external tips and auxilary parts. what can I take off or change to make it go a bit better? Anything I need to be careful of? The car is basically a bog standard 1993 Type-R. Any tips gratefully received.

Cheers
Lee

Just make it more reliable. Replace all the rubber hoses in the rats nest and eliminate the air control valve, double throttle and pcv valve. Are you keeping the stock twins or going single?

OK. First What and whre is the ra\'s nest.. heard about it lots but not sur what it is. sounds nasty! does it need to stay?
Next when you say illiminate these few valves.. do you mean take them off and bypass them? let me know what is where! I take it there are no side effects to doing this.. I will check the turbo\'s are good but plan to stay on stock turbo\'s for now.. How much boost can these take or is it not wise upping the boost on a rotary?

thank you

if you have an apexi then id say remove the air pump, acv, double throttle and 2ndry butterflys and port the plenum as much as poss :) and fit a decat pipe, if the engines in bits then a streetport 2 ..

underneath the plenum is where the rats nest is bud, it looks dawnting but its not to bad if you do 1 pipe at a time lol.. i enjoyed doing mine..

Here is a laugh!! What do you mean by the plenum? I am guessing the inlet part at the top of the engine but not entirely sure which bit you mean.. thank you. Can I do some of this even if I am not yet running an apexi?

Doing the rats nest is really easy with the engine out, but i wouldn\'t do it without these diagrams. If you remove the double throttle, air control valve and pcv valve, you may as well use the simplified diagram with less pipes and less solenoids.

Oh My God!!

All the coloured pipes!

Christ that is a lot of pipe work! guess I will be needing a large roll of silicone hosing then?!

You wont need much silicone hose.3-4 meters should be enough with some spare. This is a link to the full diagram. http://www.turborx7.com/images/Technical/vacuum_hose_diagram2.jpg
I just followed this and took out what i didn\'t want. I have no experience of doing the simplified version with less hoses though. Follow this guide for more help http://www.robrobinette.com/hoses.htm

The PCV valve stands for purge control valve. It just vents the fumes from the fuel tank into the intake manifold. I removed mine with no ill effects.
