Title: Cat Removal..
Post by: leeroy_25 on September 02, 2007, 01:37:44 PM
OK guys\' I am new so please be nice!! I have searched on the above and also seen about air pump removal.. Which has me a little confused. Firstly is there a CAT in the downpipe? If so can this be permanently removed and replaced with an aftermarket downpipe without effecting MOT? Secondly.. I notice the airpump feeds into the CAT.. If I replace the CAT with a decat pipe.. What happends to this piping? is it just left venting to air? Now I have a project n the go so the car is stripped and engine is out.. Any mods I intend to do now is a good time.. Is it actually worth taking the air pump off? In this case when I put the Cat on foir MOT I assume I need to blank the holes in it off? Will removing the Air pump make it likely to fail the emissions test? Are there tricks around this? Also if I take the pump off I figure I need to change some pullies and the drive belt? That should keep me going for a while..

Thank you
Lee

Firstly is your\'s a uk spec or an import? If it\'s a uk spec, you will have a precat in the downpipe. If it\'s an import, it wont have the precat.

If you remove tha main cat, you are left with the piping which you can leave on, but whats the point? I removed everything to do with the cat, including the airpump, the piping going to the cat, the air control valve and the 2 solenoids in the rats nest. Your gonna need the blanking plate set ( 3 piece) if you want to do what i did. You also have to join the 2 wires under the car to distinguish the heat light.

As for the mot, i think if it\'s pre aug 1992, it qualifies for the 3.5% test. This is off the top of my head, but do a search anyway!

id be more worried about running too free flowing an exhaust on a standard ECU.... you might get boost spiking porblems which lead to engine failrure (this isnt a skyline which will take a few detonations before it dies eventually...one decent size det and you will be pulling that motor!)....
youd be advised to whack a power fc on if you want a decat and then re map it

Thank you guy\'s

My car is a 1993 K plate Import. So I am safe to get at least a aftermarket downpipe to start with as that is ot something I would like to change when it\'s all back in the car.. Think my ECU may have been mapped by Garage FZX in japan.. not sure if that\'s good or bad?

Where do I get blanking plates from? Can always take the air pump off after it\'s all back i a running but my worry is whether that buggers you for MOT wen you have to run the CAT?

Cheers

Cheers.. But you still need the CAT for MOT?! So surely if the airpump is there to help reduce emissions if you take it off you will have high emissions when you fit the CAT on and go for MOT? Or is there a trick to passing this one?!

Cheers

Hi mate iv\'e just fitted a de-cat and yet to fit a huge Downpipe, but i\'m keeping my options open by keeping the air pump and the old cat, which i will fit back for mot, just for the day!

There are a lot of guys running single turbo\'s without the airpump on this forum and if their car can pass, then surely any other car can pass. It gives you loads more room in the engine bay without it AND you get to loose some weight on the car because it does weigh a ton!

Sure Robbie, but for me personally, i won\'t be keeping the car and don\'t want the hassle myself, leave that bit to the next owner,
