Title: Front mount intercoolers
Post by: ScuttleRX on February 08, 2004, 05:44:31 AM
I\'ve heard that when running a FMIC the air flow to radiator is restricted, does this prove much of a problem? and if it does is there some ways round it.

Was thinking about getting a V-mount, but combination of price and having a nice shiny intercooler on show makes it prefrable to get a front mount  :)  so just trying to weigh up the pro\'s and con\'s ;)

Hi,

yes. you can run in trouble with no change to cooling system runing FMIC. The major death- reason on Rotary is excessive heat.

Get an aftermarket radiator (brass rad from Japan is the best solution for track days and sitting in traffic jam), and thermostat that will fully open at lower temp. Make shure, you are runing not over 110° C water temp.

The electric water pumps also seem to keep temps down.

my temp frequently hit 85...is this normal?

Yep, normal temp is 80-90 degrees :)

In the summer when sat in traffic temps may hit 100, but the fans should be going full pelt and should go no higher.

On track/hard driving hovers around 90-100.

Max

im currently looking for fmic and rad upgrade was looking last night at the radiator and thinking where the hell to you put the intercooler pipes, doesnt seem to be any space as the rad takes all the space,

A mini battery is necessary too init?

nice
im wanting to keep smr but 100% bigger not any space for intercooler pipe work unless it goes behind the oil coolers, and i think the air box will have to go, that means pfc will need to be purchesed soon,

Or just re-locate to the rear of the car.

You could always stand the stock radiator upright and close to the front mount IC.

Yes it would be sensible to go PFC first, then do front mount.

If I can get booked up, think mines going on the track on the 28th of Feb... though it\'ll have stock rad etc... I\'m just not gonna belt it round all the time, let off a little :)

Fish when ya say do the rad first...is it worth getting an aftermkt rad if you go for the front mount.. I was under the impression (probably totally wrong) that the IC would do the business for both?

Reason I ask is coz I wanna uprate my boost sometime this year (only running 0.5) and was thinking of getting a front mount myself to combat any extra heat..shant bother if I just need a decent rad..

ta!

Andy, an IC unit will only cool the air going to the engine, the rad will cool the fluid cooling the engine.

Yes I would go for an aftermarket (i.e. solid alloy, no plastic) unit. They tend to be a little bigger and thicker in size.

Mail me offlist, I may have something to help you on your way.

This is interesting, seems a lot of peeps have probs with FMIC causing water temp issues - and lots dont...

I ran a Trust front mount and aftermarket rad and had no probs at all. Ant had GT-spec I/C and stock rad and no probs in the slightest. I then ran Trust FM with a new stock rad and temps were better than with another after market rad I borrowed briefly after I holed my nice big ally one...

I think a well cleaned or new stock rad is actually a pretty good unit. Just a shame about the plastic tanks :(

I belive that in many cases Stock rads are fine, its not what get, but how you use it.
I think the uprate the rad debate is more bought about as scare mongering. People say uprate the rad, but have they had a big hp car with a standard rad? genreally teh answer is no, but they have raed somewhere they should get one. My car had 78 to 80 degrees with a standard rad and smic, in mid to late summer.

The Veilside demo car that I have, has had an absolute fortune spent on it, loads of custom work, it still uses the stock rad!
I recommend only upgrading things like that, when they become a problem.

This is good then, Ill see about taking out the rad and give it a good old reverse flush with the hose pipe, and go from there.
but not for a while.Ill post results up when I do it prob end Feb.

Do they charge duties on the retail? I just shipped over a full body kit for $400 to the U.K. Im sure I can help some of you out being a vendor, I can claim the product is less.

Absolutely.  When I had my rebuild done the rad was tested and was only flowing at around 40%.  Probably one of the causes of water seal failure.

I guess a stock rad which is likely to be original is more likely to be bunged up.  Particularly in an older car - mine\'s 12 now!  Worth getting it checked out on any car and doubly so if you\'re going for bigger power.

I think he has a custom pace intercooler with a HKS hard pipe kit, and alloy rad.

it\'s gary gooding\'s car (was in fast car a few months ago, may have the details there or you can check on the Nemesis performance website)

Correct on all counts, the intercooler pipes are the stock HKS front mount piping, I dont think he has that rad any more tho; I think he sold it on as I\'m pretty sure its one I borrowed I while back from some one. I cant say I was particularly impressed by it my self. I think Steve C\'s rad from Brise looked a lot better quality - and it certainly does the job...
