Title: motorbike battery
Post by: Tango on August 27, 2007, 01:03:51 PM
what are peoples thoughts on using a motorbike battery? just bought an intercooler (cheers FLAT4MATT) but i\'ll need to either re locate my battery or get a motorbike battery, will it cause any issues (other than not to leave my car without running it for too long) ?? (if anyone has a suitable one for sale please let me know too)

dont think you will get the ampage from a bike batt, might struggle to turn it over, and it wont turn it for very long.
Rotarys do like a good spark for starting.

I had a PC680 for about 18months. Finally swapped it out because it wouldn\'t hold charge for more than a week. Got a PC1500 in the boot now, things huge, same size as a standard battery and doesn\'t loose charge easily.

I think some guys where playing with the batteries out of the jumpstart stations not too long ago.

what bits would i need to re locate the existing battery to the boot then? with the right bits is it a fairly quick/simple job?

Indeed we were, and while they would start the car first time, unless you done some pretty decent milage between starting you\'d not get going again! Not enough amp hours, I\'d say you\'d be better with a small racing battery that\'ll cost a lot but will hold loads of charge!

i am thinking of moving my battery to the Storage bin, i have been doing some reading on the Matter and there are kit cars that use two Motorbike battery\'s? i don\'t know if this would work but i like the theory.

So another option i was thinking of was to cut out the bottom of the bin and get a battery tray that fits nicely, the only thing is once i\'ve cut it out etc there is no going back and i can\'t be 100% sure on what size battery would be needed? obviously the smaller (dimensions) the better.

If you go to the 3rd gen section on rx7club and look in the FAQ there is a good install of a MX5 battery into a Storage bin.

If you have the bits its a few hrs of work. Getting the cable from the boot to the engine bay is the biggest job. The best access is behind the inner wing of the passenger side, need to take wheel off and take inner liner out for access.
Rest is just unscrewing and unclipping panels.

Im running 2x4 gauge from the + side and 0 gauge (couldn\'t get 2 gauge) all the way back to the engine bay for the negative side.

I have used the PC680 since I installed the Vmount kit. Around 4 months now, including one month of just standing still whilst I was in Japan. Not had one single problem with it. Could not be more happy tbh

If you buy the PC680 you get everything that you need with the battery.

Mine\'s an odyssey I think, I work 4 miles from home, as you know it\'s my daily driver, never had a problem that wasn\'t caused by me (left sidelights on once and left it for three weeks while in the states).

Starts no problem, thing is with them they charge up REALLY fast I\'ve never had an issue with losing charge or short journeys etc. Not even a prblem at the Pod stopped and started it all day long without issue.

mine was fine at first, after about 2yrs it started to loose charge too easily. Swapped to a much bigger version :D

Shaun, was your\'s an Odyssey? Reason I ask is the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) output etc is really good on mine for such a small battery, mine\'s been on 2yrs before I bought it and 18months while I\'ve had it and is still as fresh as a daisy :)

Really can\'t knock it at all!

Having said that I don\'t have any stereo in the car so I suppose that could be a factor? But I did have an alpine motorised flip out screen and Ipod interface wired in without any issue.

Having said that whats the normal life expectancy of a car battery? I know they dont like being drained too much (deep cycle) as they\'re designed to be topped up all the time... So I guess those not using their car everyday may see more of a problem? I dunno mines great though :Tongue1
