Title: Hunting
Post by: ianelvar on August 24, 2007, 12:25:37 PM
Problems again :eek

Got her sorted and idling really nicely. No hunting, backfiring, bad smells or crazy behaviour. Passed her MOT on Monday too :D

However, if you give it some revs, anywhere from idle up to about 3000 it hunts! I just can\'t hold the revs steady. Revs vary about 500, ramps up over about a second, dies back very quickly, then repeats!

I\'ve checked the TPS, pretty sure there are no vac leaks - get -0.8bar at idle - plugs are new, leads are new, compression good, no fault codes registered. Disconnecting the air pump makes no difference.

It\'s a totally stock car. I ran a search, and waded through a lot of hits but could only find stuff about idle hunting, which it\'s not doing! It purrs really sweetly at idle.

As always, any help greatly appreciated.

Ian

I get very similar to this with mine with the idle valve plugged in. If i unplug the idle valve the idle is absolutely perfect. I haven\'t figured out why plugging the idle valve in makes it hunt!

Hmmm. Cheers for the tip. I\'ll pull the idle valve connector and see what happens....

Can\'t think why it only hunts once it\'s off idle though. Very annoying

Doesn\'t seem to be the ISC in this case. One other thing I should mention is that the throttle response from idle is really, really poor. It revs like a marine diesel if you boot it. ie - grumbles, backfires, grudgingly builds the revs. Fine once you get it past about 2.5k though. It\'s like there\'s no acceleration enrichment going on, but the tps checks out as far as the FSM testing proceedure goes, and I\'ve tried a different one.
Also tried a different MAP sensor, but that didn\'t help either.
Disconnecting the lambda sensor didn\'t make a bit of difference, nor did resetting the ECU after changing all the bits.

I\'ve tried loads of different combinations of air bleed screw and throttle stop screw, but that makes little or no difference. Beginning to make me mad :Grrr lol.

Do any of you clever people have any ideas?

I even looked at the grounding, but it all seems fine as far as I can tell with the multimeter.

I had a hunting problem and fiddled with the tps and throttle thingy. Because they are such a pain in the a$$ to get all the three perfect I had to change the whole lot of the throttle part off a car that i knew had no problems. I would recommend maybe doing the same.

Lol. Typical of this machine I guess. Luckily I do have a spare set, and another set on the second car. Rather not pull it apart, but it probably makes sense to use the one i know that works. I\'ll post up my results for future reference. Thanks for the suggestion. :wave

I have a niggling feeling that there\'s something I\'m missing, but I can\'t quite put my finger one it. Seriously thinking of decat and PFC, as I hate the ECU being such a closed box that won\'t tell me anything. I want to know what my sensors are telling it, damnit!

Sorry for the rant, slightly drunk already, and it\'s only 8PM :rollin

This turned out to be a faulty pickup and wheel in the Crank Angle Sensor setup. Post with pics to follow...
