OMG!!! Was working on the car, taking the front splitter of and all of a sudden, smoke started to rise out of the pop up light fitting . I quickly popped the lights up and saw flames!!!!:eek:. I ran to the kitchen grabbed the kettle, filled it with water (!!!!) and ran back out throwing the water over the area on fire. The flames flickered........and returned!:eek::eek:. I ran in again, slipping on some water I had spilled, got up, filled the kettle again and let fly a second dose of water. This time the flames dissapeared. I could now see the loom behind the light, it glowed and crackled......Oh sh*t i thought, thats electric and water.....so quickley disconnected the battery and the crackling stopped.
Let me tell you........I had visions of the FD going up in flames and me standing there watching it.......helpless. I swear I would have cried if it had. I have just realised how much I love this car......and thats scary.
Damage Report -> Looks like whoever fitted the HID kit before I got the car wasn\'t quite thinking straight. They had cut the metal around the loom to pull it out of the hole it goes through behind the light to give room for the Red HID box. The metal was still very sharp from being cut and I think that every time the lights popped up and down, the loom rubbed against the sharp metal and started to cut the wires!!!
I think I got away with it. Looks like the only damage so far is to a small section of the loom so..........light out, wing off and the car is at my mates electrical unit getting some replacement wire on about a 14" section. The acid test will be when its all connected back up to see if everything works or not.
Oh Yes.......a pic....

Jeez mate, you are a lucky lucky boy !!!
 You are so lucky dude...imagine if you were not around for a few minutes............... If i was you,I would go through that car with a fine toothcomb to see if any other \'work\' had been done to it !!!!!!!!!
Wow lucky you were ther to catch it, i dont drive my FD everyday but its for this reason i disconnect the battery when in not in it, i have a quick release for the posative terminal and its just few turns, i agree with going through the car and checking everything else.
OMG, haven\'t they heard of grommits !
Shaun
As soon as the wires are reconnected, the whole loom is gonna be checked to make sure there are no other issues. I was damn lucky to have been there at the time, but I don\'t mind admitting that i was crapping it. :yes
The car is booked in for a remap on thursday with ReWorks so its gonna be a loooooooong day tommorrow!!!

Isn\'t that what they are used for??
This is why it took me hours on end to fit my hid\'s. I double and tripple checked all the wires to make sure it didn\'t chafe when the pop ups went up and down. I dont really want very high voltage from the ballast going through the bodywork frying the ecu and me.
I dread to think what would have happened if your fd was parked next to another car at night:eek:

this is why i always carry a fire exstigisher in my car (at the moment, its just behind the passanger seat in the skyline so very easy to get to!)

I\'m getting one asap. Anyway, wiring done and got the car up and running. Can\'t see any other issues but I\'m gonna keep a close eye on things from now on. Took it for a drive this evening but it was a little wet out there so had to take it easy. So nice to be behind the wheel again.....even if it was only a few days ago :Laugh
That was a close escape,thankfully:Thumbs-up I\'ve got two extinguishers in my car,but after the engine fire i thought it wise!:)
