Hi people,
I have been running my 1997 gen 3 on same 4 plugs, NGK ones but when i went to mazda today to get new ones they told me they are different for leading then trailing? Can anyone tell where they go in the block ,in what order,Whats the leading? And whats the trailing? ,as i plan to change myself a photo would be very helpful or good tech breakdown.
Thanks for your input.:)
looking at the left side of the engine youll see 4 plugs
two bottom (leading) lower number plug
two top (trailing) higher plugnumber
what plugs have you been told to use? think most standard fds are ok with 9s all round, but if your using different rated ones then the two with the higher figure go in the top 2 plug holes. ie bur 9epq in the bottom and bur 10epq in the top 2. (dont quote me on the plug codes, theyre from memory!) Hope this helps

this will help you change the plugs if its yer first time bud :) i ran (`s on mine which was pretty standard and was fine on hot and cold starts.. :D
I would sugest you change them one at a time, if you remove them all there is more risk of mixing the leads up.
As for plugs it all depends on what mods you run, what you use it for etc etc. I used mine for every day sort of thing and way stockish, i put 9\'s in all round because for the simple reason i was killing the 10\'s quicker (don\'t know exactly why) i guess they just don\'t like the work run????

You need to say which plug manufacturer, though. With champion, a hotter plug is a LOWER number, and with NGK, a hotter plug is a HIGHER number.
Can you clarify which one you meant here?
Glenn put a case forward for using a HOTTER (lower numbered NGK) in the Trailing (top).

Just realised I am talking "bullshavings here" ...sorry... It was Glenn who said we should put the hotter plug in the LEADING :Hammer :Hammer
for NGK, higher number at the top (trailing) and lower number in the lower (leading)

Bit of a Divert of here, But i\'ve only ever used NGK are Champion plugs (or another make) any good?
Thanks peeps
As my car was running fine with 9\'s all around i will cont with this ,as my car is standard spec.Just wondered as mazda told me they were different on leading and trailing.what difference it would of made but sounds like i can use same NGK 9\'s as before.
Thanks for your help:Thumbs-up

I thought it was the other way round? Lower numbers for NGK are warmer, i.e. 7\'s go in the leading holes and 9\'s (colder) go in the trailing holes?
And then 10\'s are needed if lots of boost and colder plugs are needed??? Or am I all cucking fonfused?
As i have just learnt i think the 7\'s are hotter than the 9\'s that what i have been reading anyway maybe wrong.

Arrggg I got it wrong again...
Yes, for NGK a 7 is hotter than a 9...
Champion are the other way round ( I dont know what champions are like in an RX - never used them myself.
many on here run 9\'s all the way round. I have, and I have also run 8\'s all round when the car is mostly used around town.
