Title: Lightweight Pulleys
Post by: Matts-gen2 on August 16, 2007, 01:09:56 PM
Does anyone know where I can get lightweight pulley kit for my FC?

Has anyone got a set, and do they make a big difference?

Matt

Light weight pulleys?? I am not exactly sure what you mean?

Are you looking for the Twin belt pulley for the Alt? or a Proper Underdriving pulley set like an FD\'s?

Don\'t take this the wrong way but you\'d be better of saving your money and buying a Light weight Flywheel if you want to loose Rotational mass, they are just there for Show, the only one that helps the cause is the twin alt pulley which allows you to run twin belts.

Also if you want to get rid of some of the load caused by the Ancillarys dump the air pump and PS then fit an Electric PS pump.

Your right and I bought them exactly for that reason ie looking pretty lol. I had a a few of the engine bits polished and there was something missing see pic. having them fitted over the weekend or early next week

Yeah thats the ones i mean on that SR motorsports site

Didn\'t realise they were quite that much money!!!

The air pump has gone, just trying to get my head round the secondary port opening system.  i.e. the air pump pressure is used to open the secondary ports after 5200 - 5600 revs, in order to maintain both low end and high end power.

Trying to understand how to fit an electrical / solenoid bypass, that opens the secondary ports at the 5200 rpm region.

I have the dual alternator pulley to fit from Atkinsrotary, and all new belts, just wondered if changing all the pulleys for lightweight ones would make a great deal of difference.

At $500, its expensive if it doesnt improve alot.

Maybe the saxo ps pump is the next move then.

Thanks,

Matt

Okay thanks.

It makes sense to get a lightweight flywheel, but isnt that alot of work.

On ebay only $240 (US), could i replace / change the flywheel myself. or do you need any special equipment to change it.

Matt.

likle grizzly said b4, they are more for show than anything else. although there is a benefit with the underdrive element of it but not a great deal in power gain

perhaps rotaryarts will be cheaper :)

People tend to replace the flywheel when they do the Clutch, its not hard to do but just a bit of a PITA.

Do you already have much done to your car? if not you may benefit from other mods first, like a slippery slope :) and the power bug won\'t leave you alone until it has all your money :)

Yeah true.

Removed heat exchange - straight through pipe welded in
Air pump gone
dual pulley (to be fitted)
K & N Panel filter
Kingsbourne spark leads
New engine mounts
rear koni fully adjustables (front shocks still to buy, already got front     lowering springs)

Looking to buy, here we go.....

bush kit - front and back
front and rear strut braces
front shocks
front pillowball mounts, and camber plates
gearbox mounts

Any suggestions?

I would add the rear steer bushes to your "looking to buy" list.

Also a fairly easy (and cheap) mod to do is fit an Electric fan then loose the one on the front of the engine. I just went up to the local scrappers and ended up getting a Rover 800 V6 rad cowl and both fans, i did end up fitting an FD fan switch to turn them on and off but you could wire them to a switch on the dash.

Do you own a T2 or EGI?

Oh yeah,

DTSS eliminators where on the list, just forgot to write them.

So, you mean get rid of the standard viscous fan. With and electric fan would it have to be manually turned on when the temp gets too hot? or are you saying wire it in somehow.

Excuse my idiocy with that query, what im getting at is you go to make sure u switch them on at the right time.

Ive got an Egi

What benefit is there of the electric fan?

just less drain on the engine?
Title: Lightweight Pulleys
Post by: grinder on August 17, 2007, 03:06:53 PM
yeah its less drainage and you can loose the cowl - make the engine bay look tiny at that point

the stock fan is good for about 300 bhp though !!!

you can get a water hose temp switch - so when the temp gets to a set point if turns the rad fan on - mate of mine just fitted one on his landy

chris - where is the FD fan switch - is it a simple swap out - or something rather complex ?

well the Fd\'s fan switch is on the back of the water pump housing, when i fitted one to my T2 all i did was drill and tap the T2 housing in roughly the same area. Worked well.

I did have a switch set up just as you suggested, TBH i found it easier to wire up as you could get the Switch closer to the Fans. When i did that mod i also fitted a 10lb flywheel and removed the PS and it sure reved allot easier. The problem is my next mod after that was a To4R kit, 4x1000cc injectors,Fuel reg, twin FD pumps and a Microtech ecu so as you can properly tell i skipped a large chunk of the stock turbo coaxing out.

Just attempted to change the alternator pulley for the twin pulley, but the bolt through the middle of the socket nut, i mean the one with the allen key head is burred off, ROUND!

Anyone have any idea if they are sold separtely or have any suggestions how to get it off.

With the intention of getting it back on today.

I am right in thinking that the allen key headed bolt needs to come off.  Been told that it retains the pulley on the alternator.

Title: lighter pulley on FD
Post by: AdrianE on August 23, 2007, 09:20:46 PM
Can anybody help me? I already have a lighter flywheel with an Exedy twin plate clutch on my FD. If the engine only needs to drive the alternator, is there any point in removing the front-most part of the front pulley wheel? It only weighs about 600g and it will give me more space in the engine bay (for all my future mods)...but is there any downside to this? Will it make any difference?

Also does anyone have any info on how much you can lighten the flywheel/rotors/pulley etc before it becomes a problem?

Cheers,

Adrian

I think your getting confused a bit, On an FD you use an Aftermarket Pulley kit with a Larger Waterpump pulley as part of the kit required to remove the Air pump assembly, there is little to no HP gains in doing it but if you use the Stock Pulley when you remove the Pump because of the small Belt to Waterpump contact the Belt has to be overtightened which in turn puts extra stress on the Alt bearings etc. People do tend to fit Underdriving Pulleys (basicly where you gear the Ancillarys down so they do less revs at a set engine speed) this is ok as there is less energy used to turn stuff like the Alt and water pump etc BUT!! if you don\'t drive your car allot or use it for short trips etc you may find your battery starts to struggle more.

As for how much you can Lighten a Flywheel, it realy does depend on what you want to do with the car, if you are going to drive it and may come into contact with Traffic once in a while or you like drag racing don\'t go below about 9lbs (which is very light anyway) and a Bit of advice go for a decent Quality Chromalloy (sp) flywheel, Alloy ones are renound for warping at high Hp levels and they tend to strip the Pressure plate - Flywheel threads after the Third or Forth clutch you fit.
Title: bottom pulley
Post by: AdrianE on August 24, 2007, 03:30:12 PM
Grizzly, thanks for the info, I\'m sure I already have a lighter steel flywheel though (it came with the Exedy 2-plate clutch), and I don\'t have power steering, aircon, water pump, air pump, as I took them all off! The only belt the engine uses is to power the alternator!

I\'m going to remove \'part\' of the bottom pulley (there are 2 parts) that used to drive the water pump etc. This weighs 600g...not much compared to the 10-15lbs weight of the flywheel...so I guess this is OK
