Title: Removing Bose stereo
Post by: Mimus on August 15, 2007, 07:01:37 PM
I\'ve just bought a new head unit for my Rx-7, and I was wondering what I need to remove the original Bose head unit. Do I need to remove the dash to unscrew it, or should it just pull out with standard stereo release keys?

Also, I\'ve read that when connecting up the new head unit I need to make sure to connect the green/black wire to the blue/white of the head unit. Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Thanks,

.
Mike

Not sure about the wires Mike, but i have taken my Bose out with the U shaped keys, was it faulty then? i\'m very happy with mine, even if it is 14 years old!

Cheers, I\'ll try the standard keys then to remove it.

I\'m happy with the sound quality of the speakers, but the CD-player has started skipping recently, so thought I\'d get a new head unit with mp3 support, etc. :)

Hmm... Just had a go with the radio keys, took the little side plastic bits off and inserted the keys and they do seem to catch on something, but the cd-player and radio units don\'t seem to budge at all. :( I can pull them a tiny bit forward, but they\'re still attached.

Is there another way to get behind the radio or am I missing something?

My whole dash is off at the moment mate and the cage that holds it all together still stops you from getting behind. So if it does mean you need to unskrew the CD then i\'d say go via the drivers side footwell and see if you can get in through there.

Mimus - mine was just held in by spring clips on the side, i used standard U shape tool to get mine out. Was gutted when i had to take mine out and it was because the speakers started to go on mine. :(

Also notice your a 2 min drive from me, hope to see you about and if you neeed help with the wiring you could have a look at mine but as i said i have changed the speakers and head units but kept the thing in the boot.

No joy with the U shaped tool unfortunately. I can hear it unclipping, but I think it must also be screwed in at the back. Once I\'ve tried pulling it out, if I push it back in again I can hear it clipping back in. :(  Pity, was hoping not to pull apart the dash. Paul1982, thanks, wil try from the driver\'s side.

dazpoynter, what colour is your car? I\'ve seen a couple of RX-7\'s around the area; one silver, one black. :)

Mine\'s a silver FD3S with dark gold alloys.

Been busy, so haven\'t had a lot of time to have a go at this, although I had a quick go last night at removing the dashboard, but I couldn\'t quite figure out exactly what I needed to unscrew. Had a look underneath at the passenger\'s side and can see what you mean about not being able to quite get to the stereo cage. Anyone know exactly what unscrewing/unclipping I need to do to get the dashboard off?

Thanks,

.

Do a search on here and you should be able to find a thread on it. The hard bit is removing the bit around the clock\'s. I will have to keep my eye out for you.

These keys your using. Do you realise you have to push them in the holes,  then push them sideways away from each other, then pull the stereo out. You dont need to remove the dash to get the stereo out mate.

Yeah, that\'s what I\'m doing. After I\'ve done that and tried pulling it out, if I let go and push the front of the stereo there is a definite clicking noise, so I\'m pretty sure they\'re unclipping something.
Hmm... Maybe I\'m only unclipping one side. Will check that.

Cheers

The BOSE stereo is bolted in from the back, I had mine removed and a new one fitted at a stereo and alarm place for about £45.

Found a couple of links about removing the dash, unfortunately any other links I could find don\'t seem to be available on the web anymore.. :/

I\'ve managed to get everything off except the main dashboard (have removed the side vent cover, the underneath section and unscrewed the steering wheel column cover).

It doesn\'t seem to want to budge, any screws I might have missed? Also, removing the steering wheel column cover, once I\'ve unscrewed it, how does it break into two parts? Seems very flimsy, so don\'t want to end up snapping anything.

Remove the vent trims at both ends of the dash where it meets the doors, Remove little square that sits on top of the dash by the center speaker, Remove steering wheel and steering column cowls. The cowels just pull apart once you\'ve removed the screws underneath. Lower the steering column as low as poss( 2 bolts at the top, 1 at the bottom by the pedals..you might get away with leaving the steering wheel on but mine is a momo so it comes off easy anyway), remove complete center console, remove gear stick(3x 10mm bolts), remove both A pillar trims, remove drivers knee pad thing, remove pass side knee pad thing, unplug conectors by ecu, unplug connector that goes to fuse box by pedals, get someone to help and pull the dash towards you and unplug the final connector behind the dash.

No need to remove the gauges or heater controls. Most plastic trim just pulls away..be careful and dont yank em off. You will see the bolts behind various trim you have removed. Be carefull if the dash dont come out clean..you might have forgot to unplug a connector. You really need someone to help cus it can be awkward, quite heavy and painfull on your lap when your trying to unplug a connector you cant reach..ooh the memorys come flooding back hehe.

Cheers for the help guys. Finally got around to attempting this yesterday, managed to get the dash off and unbolt the Bose stereo, then remove it, but now when connecting up my new head unit everything appears to be working except I\'m getting no sound from the speakers. I\'ve read about supplying power to the amp by connecting the blue/white wire from the stereo iso connector to the green/black wire on the wiring harness, but still no joy.  :(

Any ideas?

Thanks,
