Title: help needed, cant get my head around this one
Post by: ttpower on August 13, 2007, 09:09:20 PM
Hi people, as most of you know i had a bad engine fire and just replaced most parts in my engine bay. I have drove the car perfect and started fine, but now im experiancing problems with i think may be the alternator.

Right first of all bought a new battery and all was fine, drove it around for 20min, and my dash light all went out, dimmed down slowly, then my fans wouldnt work so got home, turned the car off, turned it back on and it was dead.

So bought a new alternator, one that has been reconditioned, fit it all and now i find even without starting the car, just turning the key to the on postion, my charge light, oil light and coolant light all come on, but only when the alternator plugs are connected, when their disconnected no lights show at all!! and it seems fine, obviously wont chage though.

Has anyone got any ideas what this may be? could it be my wiring loom may be slightly incorrect near the battery side? it worked fine at first, but im not sure it seems to be doing the opopsite on showing lights, either that or it could be duff alternator but why didnt it show with the last alternator??

Im well confused, need help people.

Yeah they should be on, and then go off once the engine is started. Is that what\'s happening?

Sounds to me like the new alternator is working correctly and the reason they weren\'t on with the old alternator is because it wasn\'t working!

If the alternator is charging fine etc then it all sounds spot on to me!

yeah you guys are perfectly correct, i was getting confused cause it was like that when i bought, the alternator must of been faulty even before the engine fire. Thanks people, all that left now is to change my turbo gaskets as the carboard foiled ones didnt work, oh well!!

Thanks.

On my FC, if the alternator isnt turning or faulty or belt has snapped :Hammer .  then all my main lights come on and stay on even when running,  must be a jap thing :)
