Title: Any1 know about bodywork?
Post by: Shaq on February 05, 2004, 12:57:51 PM
Basically to cut a long story short, the lacquer is peeling off the rear bumper the original red is still there but it is dull compared to the rest of the bumper the area that peeled of is only about 2 “X 2” so it’s a small patch but enough to pi** me of. :reallymad

What do you recommend I do ?
Any good bodyshops any1 can recommend?

Thanks in advance

To the paintshop you go batman!

Yeah just get it redone.. at a guess i\'d say prolly cost ya to £200 to have it done at a paintshop. Chipsaway do a mobile service. Only ever used them for chips (not the potato kind) dunno wot they are like.

Go and get some quotes. They\'ll need it at least a day or two though at a paintshop as they bake the sod :)

I know a few round here (beds) and brighton way but dunno if they are any use..

Shaq, as we speak, mine is being done - I had EXACTLY the same problem. It started off  in a really small spot, then it peeled more, and more, and more.

Clive had a look, and he said that basically it had been repainted but with a special additive thats needed to paint plastic.

Took the bumper off myself, and Clive\'s recommended paint shop is painting it at the moment. £220 ex vat.

I am collecting it tomorrow, will let you know what it looks like.

that seems like over kill for a bumper 220exvat!

Bloody hell,

I got my old lexus bumper sprayed for £40 and it was a pukka job. If you took the bumper off ya self itll probably be cheaper, but cheaper than 40 quid!!

only problem with the guy i know is he has a long waiting time usually about 2-4 weeks before he books you in.

Hes a good guy, he works for a company up by me, but does this on the side after work on week ends. But most weekends he spends with his son, hence the waiting time.

MRaraju...

Ok, the car is red, but its not Mazda\'s classic red. It looks to me like it was resprayed just before I bought it.

I have seen a few red RX\'s where the bumpers are a different red to the car. Seeing as my paint is new, I wanted the absolutely closest match of color possible. The peeling on the bumper was spoiling an otherwise very good looking car.

I approached Clive, and clive recommended "Beautiful Body Repairs" in Dartford.

Have you seen Clive\'s car?

The other cost contributor was they had to remove all of the old, incorrect, paint. I could have maybe done that myself, but I didnt know the best technique or process.

So, I wanted a really PROPER job.

My front spoiler was damaged too, and also a bit tatty, but I have repaired that with fibreglass and repainted it black myself.

So, I hope to put the whole lot back together this weekend.

I think i would have gotten a two-tone car for £40.

if you are taking the bumper off just to respray wont it be in a different shade anyway? if it is a matt red i guess it wont matter much, but i know red fades.

I guess the price aint bad, but that is the prices i would expect to pay if i went through a insurance company. I would have expected it to b a lot chepaer privately.

I just wish i tool a picture of the lex (LS400) when i had it done. it was in a matt black and the rear bumper was pealing and it had a few scratches on it. I just gave the whole car to him, and it come back absoloutley spotless!!

I havnt seen clives car in the flesh but it looks absolutely beautiful from the pics, its the yellow one (admin) isnt it???

Any chance posting some pics?? of your bumper?

Thx

Raju

Also i had my front bumper resprayed on mine and it turned out it was the same colour but looked like it was two totally different shades. So i had to had it done again a blown in as it was against the shutlines of the car. He ended up blending it in half way up the wings and bonnet it did look great after that so be warned this could be the best way for you too.

Ok, I took him the Fuel filler cap, so I hope its a close match.

Right, I\'ll take some pics. If I get organised I might do a "How to", its quite a bit of work to get to the bolts.

mm, I hope I dont need to "blend" mine.

Hi all

Got the bumper back, and have reinstalled, it looks fantastic! The colour looks the same, though I havent seen it on the car in the sun, yet.

I took some pics, but they are in the camera, I brought the camera today, but I left the cable at home :-(.

I hope to give you some pictures tomorrow, then.

Yes, beautiful bodies did it.

I told him I was in no hurry, I preferred the job done properly to him rushing it. So he had it for about 2 weeks.

I am trying to upload some pics, but I have to change the size .

mini meet ! sounds good !   :D

Bumper looks good so he charged 220+vat for that respray?
i take it that it would be alot more expensive for him to take the bumper off ect....

is your paint code NU ?

ShaQ
Title: Any1 know about bodywork?
Post by: Martiny on February 13, 2004, 10:16:07 AM
Yes, I suppose it would be more to remove the bumper.

Yes my code is NU for classic Red, but my car is not the standard Mazda colour. Therefore, John had to mix the paint specially, I took him the fuel cap flap so he could match it.

So, the paint mixing bit might be cheaper for you if yours is the standard mazda colour. On mine, he had to remove all of the old paint, too. He might not need to do that on yours, not sure.

After calling at Mazda for a touch up pencil I have discovered my paint code is SU for "Vintage Red". Dont know how many Rexs are this colour. Never seen another one apart from mine.

Almost finished. Do you like my foglight?   Is coming off straight after MOT.  It had to be at that height to pass the SVA.

After this picture it was just a matter of the  number plate, and then the really difficult part...putting all the interior back together  :-((
