Hi all
I have a shuddering on the FD when I pull off. As my engine will be out soon, I am going to inspect the engine mountings very carefully. But I must make sure its not the clutch causing this shudder.
I replaced clutch, pressure plate, and thrust bearing not too long ago... theyve done 5-10K miles max, so I am hoping i can re-use it all on my replacement engine. I know shuddering can be caused by grease / oil on any of the surfaces.
Question
What can I use to clean the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate friction surfaces?
Am i correct in saying this is a Single plate clutch? Is it a Standard on or uprated?
If its stock have a good look at your engine/Gear box mounts as this is one of the Symptoms of a Bad Mount (but you would expect a knock when you change gear too usaly)
It has also been known for Uprated single plate Clutches to Shudder in first when you pull away slowly.
As for oil or grease causing it i would say not, You can remove the inspection cover and gave a look at the clutch (oil would be quite ovious as it would be thrown every where) But Unless it is Slipping under load i would be suprised if it was Oil.
The only other thing i can think of, do you know if they greased the Gearbox shaft before they assembled the Thrust bearing? You are not suposed to grease this and over time the Clutch dust sticks to it and it will start to stick (not let off quick when you take your for off the clutch) but you can tell in the higher hears if this is happening (feels like the clutch is slipping when you give it some stick but drives up hills ok at low speed)

Well when i do a rebuild i clean up just the Flywheel and Pressure plate with some thinners then run over them with a Orbital Sander with some 180 grit paper on, the Friction plate i just give a light rub by hand with some 180\'s to remove the Glaze (don\'t go mad with it because there is not allot of meat on them to start with ;)) There is not allot you can do with it in the car, people say slipping the clutch cleans up the assembly but don\'t this will just Glaze the Friction plate and make things worse.
Its important the Gearbox shaft is also cleaned up well with a wire brush and clean and dry (check the Pilot bearing/Pilot seal in the E-shaft is in good order too and put a small amount of grease in it)
