Title: Re spray
Post by: TiddlesRX7 on August 11, 2007, 07:14:01 PM
Hi all. Im thinking of putting my money into a re spray. I don\'t want to change the colour of my beloved FC. Trouble is its RED. Or at least it was once! Does anyone know if the modern mazda red is ok to use or will it fade badley again? Also does anyone know someone who can do the job at a decent price in the north of England? Cheers for the help as always.

As far as I know the fading red issue was solved a while back, something to do with one of the pigments in the paint being organic or something like that. You shouldn\'t have any problems with an up to date mazda red.

All solid colour red will fade before long, if you have it painted get it done in base and clear (that doesn\'t fade)

The fading issue was solved some time back by painting new cars in Base and clear, the old Solid colours are now old school, because of the amount of Solvent etc in them the government are trying to get rid of it under the new epa rules (Because it has a High Solvent content it is not as green as Base and Clear or thats what they tell us)

They didn\'t do anything with the Solid colour for the simple reason its old and they will soon not sell allot of it so it would be R&D money they would not recoupe.

Most sprayers now will be forced to go down the water based paints to rid the solvent issue( environmental) most even prefer them for the ease of spraying. I\'m no sprayer but this was what i was told before i had my FD sprayed.

Not a mazda red but one on the VW reds will work a treat.

All proper painters should be using Water now as solvent is going to get really hard to get hold of as soon as Germany and the EU are weened off Solvent, then it will go in the way of the Dodo. After a Chat with my Old boss a week or so ago it would seem the solid colour will be getting axed in 2008 so they are pulling all the Mixing schemes out.

You would be right about the ease, Water is very different to use and less forgiving but once you master it the metallic has more of a Glitter to it and the base seems less of a Pain to get rid of Patchiness (just costs ALLOT more than the the same amount of Solvent)

BTW Did you know we still have to use Solvent High solids clear with the water base, the EPA rules start getting tight as soon as the Tonnage of solvent used a year goes over a set level and pulling Solid colour will not make any difference at all as we will still have to clear the Base coat with what is basically Solid colour with out the Pigment and 80% of Primers are Solvent. O yeh and Water base is more Dangerous to the Painter (water base is absorbed into the body easier than Solvent) so thats why most painters in Big shops have to have a Physical once a year (like me)

So its getting more technical because of legislation. Does that mean its more expensive than it used to be? Im just trying to get a rough idea of how much its gonna set me back. I\'ve been told for a good job it\'ll be around £3000 which sound expensive to me but maybe im just tight!

well it depends on allot of things like How many hours labour they use on it (that includes if there is any Damage or parking dents etc and Labour to remove and refit seals and mirrors etc)

I have seen Paint jobs start at £500 for scotch and rip jobs going up to 10k for bare metal repaints so as i say depends on how long they work on the car.
