Title: Help.....coolant problem ...please!!!
Post by: piggy on August 09, 2007, 11:38:58 PM
Hi, there is a problem in my rx-7, and I am looking for help.
After my car starts and have been running for a while, the car gets warmed up and when I turn the car off, the water bottle from the driver side at the front , starts flowing out from the small hole at the top of that coolant bottle. This only happens after the car is warmed up and only when I switch the car off. This does not happen if I keep the car running. This makes me having to fill the coolant up every time before I start the car. The radiator has been relocated to see if it helps the problem, but it still happens. Please give me advise, thanks

Have you moved the AST? where is the rad situated now? have you any pics? does the buzzer sound? you may have an air lock, bleed the system at the throttle body hose, are you filling at the filler next to alternator? has the AST got a spring in the pressure cap?

Too much water in the resouvoir means its getting past the rad cap on the AST tank - if you have one. Check the rating on the cap it should be .9 and you could try changing that first.

If there is too much air in the system that will cause the water to boil more easily and it either needs to be properly filled and burped or the water seals are leaking which will overly pressurise the coolant.

If you have changed something target the changes and see if you have trapped air in thr new set up.

I was told to have only a little water in the plastic overflow tank ..... if that is what you are talking about and it may be that in this hot weather and if you have the tank full that it is simply overflowing as it does its job to gather water as the temps usually go very high when you switch off ...... my water temps often go up to 110 when for instance I stop for petrol which will push water out.... drop back to normal after a few seconds when I switch back on again.

How long has it being going on for ? it is also a sympton of water seals failing :(

echo that - make sure you\'re not filling up the expansion tank; thats what it is, an expansion tank - if its full when cold, it will probably overflow when hot.

first you want to fit new caps, second you want to make sure they are on the correct way round.

Does the pipes go hard within a minute or so of the car starting from cold? (before they get hot in other words)

Does it start ok? doesn\'t need to be cranked if its had a good run the day before and has been left to cool down over night?

Does the Rad get hot (you can stick your hand through the Front air duct in the Bumper but be carfull its not "Really warm" (if the car is starting to overheat and you can touch the rad you may need a Thermostat)

I would say do the Bubble test but it has been known to not work.
