Title: Car hunting and misfiring
Post by: Carrington on August 09, 2007, 10:09:08 AM
Hi guys, well I got my car back from being tuned yesterday. Drove it about 120miles in total and loved every single minute of it. Iv had a T04Z fitted and tuned to 430fbhp. Brilliant, just in time for rotorstock I was thinking.
Anyway after a while I noticed the car was misfiring abit so got the car home and had a good look round and found no problem. Car starts fine when cold or warm, after 20 seconds of idling the car idles erratically from 400rpm to 1100rpm getting progressively worse and misfires up till 3000rpm and stinks of fuel. Last night when I moved the car I let it idle for about 10 seconds then reversed it for 3 meters then let it idle again, it idled for about a minute then started hunting again, smelling of fuel and misfiring when taken to about 2000rpm. Iv had decent plugs fitted due to a misfire at high RPM and high boost. I have tried starting it at different water temps and it does it roughly the same each time (I have an apexi FC).

I hope its not a rotor tip but like I said it idles fine for the first 20 seconds then starts to hunt. Turn it off and back on 5 seconds later it will do the same, be fine then 20 seconds later it hunts.

Im going to have a look at the map sensor when I get home tonight but has anybody got any other ideas?

Does the Apexi have a way of displaying problematic sensors?

Thanks for looking.

Worth checking to see if the pipe has come off the MAP sensor. Also check the one way valve on it, and make sure it still flows one way.

Ok, had a little play tonight with the car and found out that the one way check valve has turned into a two way check valve, so i changed it for a cream and green one i had left over from my twin to single conversion. So i tried starting the engine and letting it idle, after about 2 mins of idling it  started to slowly hunt just not as much as before.

Does anybody think the one way check valve iv used ok for this application or do i need to get a proper one.

Also does anybody think my map sensor might be broke due to the check valve and thats why its still doing it a little.

Cheers for looking

Does it Miss all the time? or does it Build up?

Sounds like you may have a dodgy water temp sender, I belive the Apexi does have a diagnostic screen (well it tels you if its getting signals from sensors) but you would have to talk to some one that has used it (i haven\'t)

Hay guys, sat down with the apexi fc handheld thingy mejig and had a good look through all the screens and sensor readings. All looks good in my opinion even when its hunting abit. I thought i\'ll take it out for a quick spin and see what happens to the misfire when theres abit more load on it. I found it quite interesting when the misfire disapeared on about 25% throttle then came back at about 40% then disapeared at about 50% and up. It still wont idle properly but when the car was fully warmed up i gave it full boost up the rev range, it never missed a beat at 100% throttle but letting off at high RPM it poped and banged alittle (nothing unusual there) but as it went past 3000rpm and 2000rpm it misfired alittle then started hunting at idle again. Would the water temp sensor be buggered but still tell the apexi a fairly accurate reading?

Cheers for looking.
