Title: Spongey brakes
Post by: andysmee on August 06, 2007, 01:56:38 PM
I\'ve just had the rear pads replaced and when I drove off the forecourt the brakes were spongey and needed bleeding...and that\'s the second time it\'s happened. When I had the fronts done a few months ago I had the same problem.

Is there something funny about FD brakes which means you have to bleed them after changing the pads?

the only way for air to get in is from a split pipe/loose valve or breakdown of fluid over very very long period not just from changing pads

You should get them done at a proper garage Andy !!!!   lol

Assuming the rest of your braking system is OK, it sounds to me as if the person who fitted your new pads allowed the pistons to extend too far and fluid was released from behind the piston seals allowing air in.
It\'s not a difficult job to bleed brakes, takes about a hour once your prepared . If the fluid in the system has not been changed for a number of years it may be worth doing a proper job and replacing all the fluid in the braking system which does absorb moisture which leads to that classic " spongy " feel.
Brake bleeding is well documented on the web, either find a friend to help or buy a cheap Gunson do-it-yourself kit and save yourself some money and gain a lot of satisfaction.
If you\'ve gots lots of money then give the job to the local garage and they will do there best to relieve you of most of it.

There is a quick way to bleed brakes - you can do 3 of them in 1 minutes and then manually do the last one. I\'m not 100% sure (lol dont quote me) but its something to do with if you have a brake servo or not) but if you put your tyre pressure through the lines it\'ll do it for you.

:-( Cant remember what car i did it on now as i\'ve had 11 in the last year lol

Sorry, sounds a little confusing.
The principle of the Gunson " eazi bleed " is to use low air pressure ( 18 - 20 psi ) from a tyre to purge new fluid through the system removing all the air without the need for a second party pumping the brake pedal.. Can\'t be done in 1 minutes ?, doesn\'t depend on whether you have a servo or not and all four wheels can be done quite easily.  The only variable car to car is the cap required to fit onto your brake fluid reservoir and they are normally in the kit.
Read up, its all on the web.

You have to bleed them in a certain order. I think you bleed the wheel closest to the resevoir first, then finish with the wheel further from the resevoir.

Yup thats the boy - think it was on my Lotus - because the pipes went up and down it was hard to get the air out. Used this easi bleed and the right psi pushed it all out straight away :-)
