Title: Help Extreme Heat, Toxic Fumes, Backfiring, Noise
Post by: marcosgarcia on August 02, 2007, 01:39:14 PM
Hi I have a 1993 rx7 manual import,

it has the following modifications

Catback Exhaust
Large Square Silver Arc Induction Kit
HKS Blow Of valve
Greddy Boost Gauge

as far as i can see the rest of the car is all standard.

The problem I have is once started the car is releasing very bad toxic fumes from the exhaust, anyone standing next to it or around it has to quickly move away as the fumes
start to make your eyes sore.

The car gets extremly hot within 10 Minutes of being started, and you can feel the heat of the engine.

The car backfires when you press the accelerator hard and let go, and it makes a loud bang like a gunshot and a huge flame comes out,  enough to make pedestrians jump for cover

The car still has power. It does not overheat temp gauge is steady and water doesnt mysterisly dissapear. No leaks whatsoever. Never heard the coolant buzzer go over.

Also when the car is idling there is strange air sucking noise that has a kind of ryhthmn to it. it does not sound right to me.

It had a service a couple of months ago and had everything done apart from the Fuel filter, which the garage could not locate even though i told them it was somewhere near the fuel tank toward the rear.

A couple of days ago I had all the vacuam hoses checked, they seem all fine, also the map sensor is ok.

I carried out a diy diagnostic check by connecting a wire between the Ten and Ground pins and then connecting an l.e.d to the B+ and Fen pins.

When I turned the key over the l.e.d only came on once and then went away. I have checked it couple of times, even after reseting the ecu by disconeecting the battery and keeping the brake pressed for 30 seconds.

Still the same only comes on once and goes away so I am led to believe that there are no fault codes. but please tell me if im wrong

The other day I had the car put on a ramp and we saw that there was a wire that has been cut under the front of the exhast i beleive it is cat lamda sensor, the guy at the garage could not seem to find where the wire connects to, incompetent mechanic!!!

Would a faulty or damaged or spliced 02 or lamda sensor cause these kind of symptoms, if so where do I get one from? how much are they??
and where the hell does the lamda wire actualy go to??

Also would a clogged up or worn fuel filter cause these symptoms as mine has not been changed in a while??

Maybe the car is overfueling???   Could it be that the cat convertor has died and now that it is blocked it is causing these symptoms...???

Must be someone who can help me, I thought I would atleast check these two things first before, even thinking of a rebuild.

Which of course is something that we guys have to face at one point in time just hope its not anytime soon as i cant afford it right now.

If your cat was shot then the red heat light on the dash should come on.... unless the sensor has been unpluged!!

Jamie I would like to remove the cat, there are some decat pipes on ebay for £100 quid, but from what I have read it seems that it is not wise to have a decat whilst running a standard ecu.

have a resorictor rimg put in  where the join is. that way in the future when you get a new ecu - you can simply remove the ring. plus will work out a lot less money than buying new cats.

i THINK the main problem with decatting on the twins is boost spike. a simple answer is to get a boost controler.

basically everything you said sounds normal, possibly the toxicity of the fumes may be a bit over the top but otherwise you just described an FD

No cat= higher gas flows resilting in faster turbo spool up which is harder to controle & forcing the engine to run lean which will result in: BOOOOOM!!!!!

but pitting in a restrictor ring will slow the gasses down .
