Title: Overheating
Post by: tsh on August 02, 2007, 11:24:52 AM
Finally got my vert back on the road :driving , and observed that it\'s got a slight overheating problem (in traffic, using the heater fixes it). First thought was that it\'s the viscous fan thingy, which I can replace from my spares kit, or maybe the rad is gunked up, or an airlock. Anyone got any suggestions for other things that might cause this? Engine is fairly new (10k miles ish)

How hot is it getting?  Is this after a +60 run?

could be an airlock in the rad i suppose - although no idea how you get shut of it

is it something as simple as the thermostat is shot

i know mine did it a while back - i found out that the rad had a hairline crack on the top

was fine at 70+ but any faster and the temp gauge would move upwards ( never a good sign )

if it only does it in standing traffic - sounds like the fan could not be running properly

supposed to be a simple test

1 - get the car hot so that the fan is running
2 - shut the car off
3 - if the fan is free to turn - then the viscous coupling is shot and this could be the prob
4 - i think you can solve it by sticking a screw thru the coupling so that it runs all the time

if i was you i\'d throw a new thermostat and rad cap on to be on the safe side.

do the water pipes go hard after a few seconds or so of running from cold? (if so can you hold the pipe or is it too hot?)

does it loose any water into the overflow bottle?

i take it you have anti freeze or another form of rust preventive measure?
