Hi guys
I\'ve owned a UK spec FD for 4 years now and have had one MAJOR rebuild about 6 months after owning it, new turbos the works!
Which means it should be good for a good while, but i\'m getting this funny feeling i\'m sitting in a time bomb... so i may do something very very bad!
I\'m considering doing a V8 engine swap, obviously not on my chasis but finding a cheaper rougher model.
Is it wrong?
Should i do it?
Anyone want my car?
Any rolling chasis?
hi mate, if your interested, my 1994 fd is up for sale for 4k. i had the water seals go on me last week and she needs a rebuild, but if all you want is the car as it is and whack a v8 in it then mine would be perfect for you. let me know what you think. the car can be seen in the for sale section.
I\'m really looking to spend no more then £1500 on a FD shell, even partly stripped it wouldn\'t matter, but as i\'m only just getting on my feet after uni i need to do the bulk of work myself and really do it on the cheap ( obvioulsy not what goes into the car, but way of labour)
£1500 is low even for a blown engine one etc
A friend of mine picked one up with slight front damage for £1000, and i\'ve found a rolling chasis for £1250, but it already had someone interested...
I don\'t mind a bit of damage, nothing that can\'t be put wrong!
time bomb fever is what is killing my enjoyment of the car along with the big fuel bill so i will be taking an alternate route soon also.
best of luck, please post up too
time bombs alright....... tell you what, i hate to say it but i\'ll never touch another one!. it\'s back to hondas\' for me chaps!
well mine is available as a shell...you can call me on 07947212298 if you like if you want more details....it needs to be gne quick tho.

Bit of a strange one there - you remark that you had a full re-build 3 1/2 years ago and the car is running fine atm...........whats your problem? I cant think of one sports car [out and out I mean] that does not require loads of TLC rebuilds included, as for V8\'s well I was always under the impression the heart of the RX was its unique engine and its ability to make good power, yes they cost to run but I am sure if you ran a Supra / skybus you would get a similar return, start tuning the afore mentioned and you will a] spend more and b] not get anywhere near the satisfaction that you will get from the rex.
V8\'s yeah for the engineering experience but as a RX7V8 nah not for me - youd be better buying a \'vette or similar.
I owned my yellow one for close on 6 years never let me down, still going strong and making over 450atw 2 years further on, my current ride making slightly more comming up for a year down the line and it dont miss a beat.
You clearly have invested well fitting a full re-build and turbo\'s and I\'m sure its given you loads of pleasure, the majority of the failures on here are from poorly maintained abused cars, you are dealing with a 10-15 year old car and things wear out - electrics breakdown, if you have maintained it well I see no reason why you have this \'timebomb\' thing
Hi John
I will agree with you on virtually all you say but I do think that as RX\'s get older the most likely problem wil come from a perished water seal [just down to the its age] and no amount of TLC will prevent this.
I think it\'s got to expected from older engines, cured after a rebuild.
John
i agree partly. I have had 2 RX7s, a supra and an evo VIII. the supra never missed a beat but.............. was very very thirsty after BPU.Also boring to drive.
The evo despite being a new one broke a diff at a cost of £6k!!!! yes 6k for a diff plus the tuning was stupid money.
out of all the cars my current RX is way more fuel efficient than the supra or the evo and if things go wrong they are relatively cheap to fix!
I had a V8 in my marcos but V8s ent all that. they dont rev high plus you lose the fun of the turbo. I feel that if you removed the engine and put a V8 in then you would take the soul out of your car. i say enjoy it and if it goes bang. fix it!

i agree totally, i bought a car with a full rebuild but an omp pipe died taking the engine with it.... i cannot name a car that will run without oil. but i have rebuilt for a lot less than any other car would have cost and now am happy, if it blows again even with a £3k rebuild bill it would be less than a rebuild on an equivalent power motor.
Matt
TBH i see an FD as a car that needs to be owned by an Enthusiast, even though it handles like its on rails (with out question the best in its class) it needs TLC.
Thing is the FD is always going to be taboo, the engine thing is always going to put people off. But that said, the Fd is simply the best Track car out there !! Whenyou say Fuel costs and MPG look at a Skyline thats running 600hp to your 400 in an FD, ok the Fd is always going to be the Time bomb but just Imagen if a Skyline let go :) your talking twice the labour to start with.
A while back i was in an 360hp FD that was laping Comb withing tenths of a 450hp Evo 5, thing is add the right driver and the Fd is going to be there, i just can\'t think of a car that brings a grin to the face like an FD. The engine is the thing that makes and Brakes the FD, take it away and you may as well buy a Supra.

These are all things that you need to weigh up yourself; no one can answer them for you. For some people it would be wrong and for others it wouldn’t. We each have our own reasons for doing things based on our own needs, wants and priorities.
Oh by the way if you do go the V8 route you we surly go straight to hell:evillaugh , join the club:mmmm .
I want to get this clear.... the reason mainly is reliability??? if thats the case you would prob be better off with a different car like a supra or 350z????
I know the supra boys have started putting V8s in - but thats in the N/as as N/A - T set up doesnt produce the power of a TT - T. I also know that there a couple of V12s in supras now too as some people dont like th \'lag\' of massive single turbo set ups.
This may sound strange but after selling the supra i was going to buy a TVR Tuscan - but i was worried about reliability..... i called TVR power and they suggested tsking out the TVR lump (as in their words \'it will go bang\' and at the cost of £8k) and one of their suggested engines was ironically an RX7 lump.
