Title: Why are rear discs more expensive than front discs?
Post by: Tim_B on July 28, 2007, 07:00:05 PM
Why do rear discs cost more than front ones?  and pads for that matter, its got me puzzled :2Confused

Surely its the same but a not quite as thick, so I would expect same price or less.  Also, I notice that knackered out fronts are same size as new rears... call me tight but could you just put the fronts on the rear - I\'m sure there is a good reason why not, just not sure what it is :o

Also can\'t find any decent plain discs (i.e. uprated from stock but not drilled and grooved), anyone recommend anything?

And low dust track worthy pads - ferodo DS2500s? or any better suggestions?

Most likely the front discs are sold in higher numbers than the rear (wear out quicker) so economy of scales comes into account. The more they make the cheaper per part they become to the vendors.

I got my last set off speedways for both front and rear. They where pattern parts (i think) don\'t seem too bad, thinking about getting some recon calipers. That made a huge difference on the 1st gen.

Do low dust track worthy pads exist ??

I think that whilst they are not a "true" track pad but our people are using them on track with success, Mintex Xtreame are about the best your going to get on that front.

Hope this helps

Many rear discs for sports cars have 2 sets of friction surfaces - the 2 sides of the disc form the standard brake, but their is often an inside surface similar to a drum brake that is used by the handbrake mechanism.  I am not sure if the FD has this arrangement, but my wifes 300zx does, and it makes the rear discs more expensive because there is additional machining required.
