Title: How often should you start an FD?
Post by: tailz on July 27, 2007, 04:30:32 PM
It\'s all in the title.

It\'s currently my everyday car but I\'m relocating and will leave it at my parents house.

Would my Dad starting it up and going around the block each week suffice, if I am coming back every 4 weeks to use it for a weekend?

Thanks in advance.

Tailz

PS - my Dad won\'t know what\'s hit him!! :3gears-rh

As long as he takes it for a drive, if he starts it just to turn it off, it could flood.

oh, give him your credit card for fuel  lol

To be honest with you.... mine can go for a month with out turning the key & I\'ve not had a problem!!!
As long as it isn\'t running on choke when it is turned off you should be OK, but as with anything, its always better to use it from time to time as it keeps things moving..... things like the breaks will get used, the joints on te prop will be kept free etc!!

IME engines don\'t like short runs, and rotaries really don\'t like short runs. Sometimes, my FD or the FC don\'t get used for several weeks (longest period I think was something like six weeks) so I make sure that I take them out for a long drive when I do use them. Seems to work fine as long as the battery\'s got enough juice in it to actually start the car...

You need to keep an eye on the battery cus if it\'s not being used, it will go flat, and once left flat for weeks it will permanantly kill the battery. Try and get it on charge once a fortnight

Having killed one battery in the last 12 months through lack of useage I\'d say take it for a drive of several miles every two weeks. Enormously good smile value too. :-D

And the above will start to annoy your alarm as I found. If I dont run mine for a few weeks I give it a charge / run out.

I have a similar issue.  Seems like the biggest concern is keeping the battery in a decent condition.  What about a battery charger / conditioner?  Something that trickle charges the battery but can be left on constantly whilst still connected to the car.  I assume there is such a thing?

Have a look for an Optimate/Accumate - they\'re intelligent trickle chargers that you can leave on the battery pretty much permanently. I use them to keep my motorbikes\' batteries topped up. If I don\'t forget...
