Title: mot time (lincoln area)
Post by: trevtubby on July 26, 2007, 03:26:24 PM
heya,

Its that time of the year im afraid, bugger. Does anyone know of any ...erm, friendly garages, in and around the lincolnshire area?

Its just I have a de-cat exhaust system so i`m not sure about the whole emissions dilemma?

Cheers

Trev

p.s its a 1994 import

cool, so you think I should stick it in any garage and see whats what? I just dont want to take it someplace and it fail on emissions because then i`ll be stuck?

Ive read that imports only have to do the idle emissions test, not the full one..dunno how true that is though lol.

The ruling i believe is pre 1995 for idle & tests done 3.5% CO

Jammy sods mines a R plate so has the new emissions tests and is decatted.
First run on the machine got me 3.81%.  Then we messed about a bit and my friendly garage managed to pass it for me :)

ok, had the mot today and it failed on emissions. Passed everything else.

It failed on the 2nd fast idle test supposedly. I didnt think that a pre 1995 import car had a fast idle test?

well anyways the guy who did the MOT said that if I can get a letter from mazda stating that as my car is a 1994 import it doesnt need to do the fast idle test, he`ll pass it?

Any ideas how I can go about this? Ive been to the mazda dealership in Lincoln today and they basically just fobbed me off?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you dont need the letter he cant have found ur car on the database if its an import and so the prompt should have led him to just doing the non cat test..the guy doesnt know what he is doing he must have just chucked the car on as a uk car.when i had mine done the database wasnt able to find a match

I wish I had done now mate, the thing is it passed everything else with flying colour and if i go elsewhere now ive wasted £40 on the MOT

Is there anyone I can phone who can send me some sort of letter stating the rules and regs covering import cars. He did show me something in his mot regs book about import cars and he thinks he`s right.

If it\'s already been tested in this country the database WILL pick up the vehicle.  Only in rare occasions does this not happen, ie if it\'s been on a SORN for a while or a fresh import.

Advise the tester that the fact that it has FD3S (Or the incorrect FD35 on most V5C\'s) shows that this is an imported car and the fact that it hasn\'t got
two cats like the UK version.   It\'s a shame V5C\'s don\'t show cars as being imports, would make life sooooooo much easier.

i wasnt as accurate as i could have been the car will be on the database but the prompt for up to aug95 for imports should have led him to the non cat test its a flow chart with yes and no prompts but the gist is a imported car up to aug 95 only has the non cat test due to the absence of the 2nd cat..if uk car then full test after 1992..does that sound right
even imports with decat will need fettling with the apexi to reach the 3.5co
dave/sicknote is the expert with the rules and decatted just wont pass without fettling the ecu and as most are imports in this country nearly all 7,s here need adjustment for the 3.5co
it comes of having a airpump that helped with the ceramic cats(old style)
i have a 95 but am just going to put a metallic substrate  high flow cat back on to one decrease noise and 2 help with getting 3.5co with less fettling

I`ll need some sort of written letter from mazda I think to show to him, as he was being a bit of an arse about it.
But even if I can prove its an import, does that then mean it shouldnt have to go through the Fast Idle test? As thats what it failed on?

Also what exactly do I tinker with on the power fc to lower the emissions? I dont want to mess anything up :(

you only need the 3.5co test but without a cat you will need to alter the apexi unless they are rex friendly

Is there anyone in particular I need to ask for when I call these up mate? Do I just be honest and say I need an MOT which doesnt include a emission test? Surely if they dont know me they`ll tell me to shove it lol

all sorted, decided to ring VOSA myself and find out whats what. Spoke to a lovely sounding lady, and she confirmed that my car does not need to have the fast idle test.

All it needed was the non-cat test..which it passed  :D

So just been down to the garage to share this info, and the mot tester thought I was talking crap so rang VOSA himself, only to come back 10 mins later with his tale firmly between his legs and handed me my shiney new MOT certificate.

Have you got a phone no. for this VOSA? I\'ve got an FB with peculiar problems which I\'d like emissions test advice on. Hope you can oblige.

Result! A similar (probably the same) lovely sounding lady at VOSA has given me the advice that I and my friendly MOT mechanic needed. We are emissions exempt!
Doesn\'t come up often but cars with very delayed registrations are classed as built - date not registration date for this kind of issue. I will need evidence but I\'ve got that. The lady also said my tester could ring her if he needed to! How about that.
Thanks Trevtubby:Thumbs-up
