Title: which 18" wheels?
Post by: Papercup on July 19, 2007, 11:34:32 PM
hi peeps,

I\'ve killed the standard brakes so i am going AP. Now i love my BBS LMs but with them being splitties the internal diameter is more like a 16" and I only want to do big brakes once, and do it right first time, so they may have to go so i can get a sodding big disc and 6 pots in :)

So, its 18" time...any suggestions? I might ask some of you with photoshop skills to try some mock-ups in a while if you would be so kind :)

Which wheels and where to get them? I quite like the Volk ones here:

Here is the car at present....and yes, the LMs will be for sale with two sets of tyres :) so feel free to start with the (sensible) offers

p.s. mods, yes i know its in the general section; but it seems i will get more feedback here, and its not really \'technical\'...not yet anyway :)

those were 19s by the way :)

A bit of background. The car is not for posing (though it ain\'t bad ;) ). It was built for tracks and sprinting and thats why i bought it. I do drive it on the street and i like to look good but this is about performance more than looks. The only reason i want bigger wheels is to put the bigger brakes in. I don\'t want to compromise the handling of the car or the ride, which is very good for something so stiff.

I am old-fashioned and prefer silver wheels to coloured ones. I can\'t see myself having white ones, and i plainly dislike black wheels. I could be talked into bronze, maybe?

Its going to take something really nice to get those LMs off my car!

So....convince me! What would you put on this car, were it yours?

Work Emotion CR Kai everytime for me. IMO one of the best wheels out there.

Rarerims do a very good copy too, which while won\'t be as light as original forged works, look very similar.

If you are serious about it being for track work then forget the Japanese bling and order a set of proper motorsport wheels from Compomotive.

are you saying that jap stuff isn\'t up to hard work?

do they not race in various classes with them on many cars?

genuine question :)

nice....but i\'ve kind of \'been there, done that\' if you know what i mean?

i\'m lying if i say i don\'t want something really nice looking....now i am looking hard i see all sorts of loveliness

i\'d hate to get something beautiful and destroy them, but these jap rims can\'t be all bling?

off to Reworx tomorrow i think to have a look at a few they have down there; one with the 330mm AP kit on 17s, another with 343mm on 18s

both 6 pots i think, but the 330 kit has a smaller caliper that only fits that disc, i think.

bigger disc and caliper got to be the way to go?

in my experience (and i have had various sets of wheels have pass thru my hands), the majortiy of jap wheels are whack. Im steer completely clear of split rims as they tend to crack and buckle very easily. youre right, they do use these jap wheels on race cars...but then race cars spend their time on super smooth tarmac...they sure as hell wont cut it on potholey lanes! A lot of people rate rota wheels...but ive personally cracked and buckled 2 wheels from potholes.
If i was using my car for sprint or rallying, id have a set of compomotive mos on there without batting an eyelid! Standard FD wheels are whack as well strength wise....

oh and dont even get me started on the lacquer degradation issues that jap wheels suffer here due to the salt....

oh and enkei nt03s wise...you can always refurb them in bronze! One piece construction means cheaper to refurb!

mmm interesting stuff. You may slightly have missed my point though (or what i intend to do with them); you mention potholey lanes and rallying?

I am getting rid of splits (these BBS fellas) and need a set of non-splits for road and track. But not rallying, and by sprinting i mean tarmac sprints such as Lydden and Goodwood. Lap-and-a-half stuff.

As an example of its usage, since getting it in February or March I have covered about 2500 miles. Most on road (\'hoons\', goodwood breakfast club runs, evening zooms out to meets or Box Hill) and the rest either on track or getting to tracks. Snetterton, North Weald (for the activity day with others from here) and Bedford and i would have done more tracks had i not killed the brakes at Bedford and not been able to order more due to funds. There is too much road stuff in there but with the brakes not at their best i couldn\'t track it and i love it so much i simply have to drive it :) - if any of you own a tuned one of these you\'ll understand! I drive my van around during the day making \'brrmm\' noises and wishing i was in the Rex!

Now the brakes are ordered i\'ll be at Lydden next month and Snetterton again the month after. I really ought to get to the \'ring this year as i was there last year twice.

I keep away from potholey lanes, though back roads are fun...until they get bumpy and potholey!

So with that lot i don\'t really think i need overy strong motorsport or competition wheels? Its not a race car, its a track-oriented street car really.

Oh, and yes, there is a part of me that wants a set of utterly beautiful wheels.  :o

Its constructive in as much as it tells other members that Jap wheels arent about \'bling\'
But if you want more constructive.
If you go for TE37 with the correct offset you can run 6 pots with 356mm discs, you can even go to 17s and still fit them in, I only have experience of the Kad kits, so not sure if the APs will or not
If you want the best value for money extremely light wheels, get some Real Racing R2s from Japan, I have 17 by 9.5 and the only weigh 7.1Kgs.

I have looked at the TE37s, they were the first i really noticed....but they are jolly expensive and i am leaning towards the Advan RS (the second picture i posted up) just because i love the looks. I don\'t suppose you have any nowledge of them, good or otherwise?

I would love to get the 355mm AP kit in them...

Can i get a 9 and 10 inch in instead of the 8 and 9 i have now, do you think?

cheers

Just out of interest how heavy can it be, rimstock do a nice 17in wheel thats used in touring cars, the pro race 1.3. May need a custom fitment because the offset is 45 and they weigh 9.6kgs

They might look "Bling"

but they are bloody light, and strong. And look nice too. They come in different finishes - the above is "Rays metal coat" and i have the polished lip finish on my car, as below:

mmm they are nice. I also picked out the Advan TCII\'s first of all, and once i had a shortlist of wheels i liked from the Newera site i realised they were all the same! 5 or 6 spoke, that look...the first picture i posted was my first choice, along with the TCIIs.

Then i saw those Advan RS\'s and fell in love with them due to that picture i posted, that 3D look...looking into sizes and offsets and availability as we speak....
