Title: Painting
Post by: Ricco_04 on July 15, 2007, 01:46:30 PM
Hi all,

I\'m prepping a few items on my TII and wondered if anyone can offer some advice on painting.  I\'ve done loads of painting with spray can\'s and have to say im not bad now! :)   I will of course practice on a few items I have that wont go on the car, so I can afford to \'learn\'!  I have a proper compressor with the usuall assortment of tools you get with them and want to use this as it will, in time, be easier and will have a better finish.

Any advice, tips, warnings most welcome! :Thumbs-up

Nice one, been looking at a few of those - so best ditch the one that comes with the kit o 5 pieces then! Looks like these :

Whats the best plan of attack mate?  Good rub down, primer, rub, primer, rub, paint, rub, paint.....? :o

ok ditch that kit lol well the sprayer anyhoo..

kk it`s all in the preping buddy lol.. the better the prep, better the finish a be..

Soooo... here goes.. say your spraying a wing..

i sand down the whole thing to give it a good key with 500grit paper
apply a light coat of primer, wait 5 mins them apply a thicker coat
once dry sand it down using a sanding block else you`ll get wee pot holes n it wont look right at angles lol
You may need to do the prime n sand a few time depending on imperfections.. priming`s easyer than filler so most of the time i`ll apply a good few coats of primer n sand it bck..
A good thing to do is after the first coat of primer n sanding, add a bit of black paint to the primer to change the colour so u know how far bck to sand it.
final rub down i use 800grit as any coarser will show through the colour coat.

Thats about it for prepin..

Final colour coats, again a light coating, wait 10 mins then a thicker coat, 30 mins later (have a cold garage lol) another thick coat.. that should be you.. unless its metalic and u need clear coats too..

more than likely iv totally confused you man lol but if you wanna give me a ring i cn talk ya threw it :evillaugh

No no, im still with you.  This is all good info.  I have done the thing with the black paint also as I had to repair one of the wings.

Ok I even have a shopping list now!

500grit paper
800grit paper
Proper sanding block (mine is a bit old!)
Top feed spray gun

What do you do in the way of paint and primer.  Im used to using acid etch primer fron a spray can on bear metal and painting up after that.  so is there a perticular primer and paint I need.  It is the Crystal White (UC) paint which doesn\'t like sticking to the car!

Old picture :

I have to say it\'s all your fault that has made me want to do this! :Thumbs-up.

haha interloper guide to painting lol.. this is the way i do it but imsure everyone has there own methods.. mines tryed n tested :D

ok a few more things..

iv never used the acid primer bud, at least with sanding you know the finish is the same all over plus i think it gives a better key for the paint..

All the paint/primers can be applyed to anything but for plastics you need plastic primer which allows the paint to flex with the plastic, if its solid hard plastic i dont bother, once you`ve used it you`ll get a better idear of what needs it b4 paintin...

Also as your a newby you`ll prob get orange peel on the finish of the paint, this isnt a prob and can be sorted easily so dont worry :)

Now what you`ll need is:

2000grit wet and dry
G3 polishing liquid
Polishing mop or do it by hand lol

Now once you`ve finished painting weither its a solid paint or metalic and you have some orange peel texture, heres what you do.. (ps only sand the metalic after the clear coats are applyed ususally 3-4 coats)

Once the final coats are applyed n dryed, sand down with the 2000 wet n dry and use soapy water and plenty of it, i also use a spray water bottle cus its easier... wash of and apply some g3 and polish the dull paintwork back up to a high gloss shine..

tink thats it man lol

Top man, thank you.

I\'m a pro, I won\'t be getting orange peel! (ahem, better order 10 rolls of 2000grit then! ;))

Better get looking for some paint and primer too!

Thanks Craig! :god

kk no probs bud..

for mixing:

primer/hardner 2-1 with 10% thinners
paint/hardner 3-1 10% thinners

And get a good face mask bud.. not nice stuff to breath in :P

So list is now :

500grit paper
800grit paper
Proper sanding block (mine is a bit old!)
Top feed spray gun
Primer
Paint
Hardner
Thinner
G3 polishing liquid
10 tubs of elbow grease or a polishing mop ;)
Face mask

Thanks mate! :cool

Well, the quality of the gun is important - get at least a decent mid-range gun. Also make sure your compressor is up to it, a lot of the better guns these days are HVLP and a lot of hobbyist compressors can\'t deliver the necessary amount of air.

Oh, and seeing that you\'re suffering from the "paint falling off" problem, I\'d recommend to strip the paint off the bonnet completely. Otherwise you\'ll be spending an insane amount of time to get the paint onto the car, only to have it fall off around the next corner.

Oh, and even white paint gains a lot from being clearcoated (my vert\'s been clearcoated and those who have seen it at the retroshow can probably confirm that it is rather pleasing to the eye) so I\'d clear it as well.

yip lol i usually clearcoat everything now, helps protect the paint and reduces fading fae the sun.. i live in scotland so fades not a prob :P

Ok good info.  The compressor I have runs at 8bar and comes back on again at 6bar - although I can change this, it has a 50liter tank.  I was told this was more than good enough so just hope it is now! :2Confused :Giggle

Yeah, was reading up on the old where has my paint gone situation, its amazing how much you can get rid of with just compressed air!  I will be removing all the paint and give the remaining primer a match against some 500grit! :evillaugh

I was going to clear coat but forgot to stick it on the list! :Hammer

All good info, thank you gentlemen! :wave

The problem with HVLP guns is not the pressure, but the air flow that the compressor needs to supply at a given pressure.

From memory, the SATA minijet 4 I have (which is not a full-size gun but rather a touch-up gun, but works well on the smaller surfaces you find on motorbikes) only needs something like 2-3bar, but it wants a sustained 5 or 6 cfm at that pressure. And suddenly a lot of the smaller compressor struggle - I was advised that I probably needed a 2.5bhp compressor just to run that gun. Which I have yet to buy :(.

I think my neighbours would *really* hate me if I tried to buy a compressor to run a fullsize HVLP gun :D.

Thats really interesting.  I tried to do the same with Hammerite (as I guess it\'s the same as the paint he\'s on about)  I might give it another go using his thinning method and a roller - I have to take the bit off that I did anyway and I already have the paint so i\'ll see what happens!

Yeah, I see what you mean, I have just tried the paint gun (not armed! ;)) and it seems the compressor can feed it the air it wants - it dropf from 8bar to 6 (compressor turns back on here) and seems to remain at 6bar.  So as long as I can find a top feed gun that works at 6bar or just under then hopefully that should work.

Hopefully you cant tell that fingers are crossed there! :Laugh

Heh. TBH, with most of the guns I\'ve used (and no, I\'m not a sprayer, it\'s something I did very occasionally in the past tho\'), I would advise to turn down the boost :rollin. No seriously, I think a lot of guns seem to work better at pressures below 6bar. Which would probably mean that your compressor could (hopefully) sustain the air flow a bit longer.

What.....NO BOOST! :evillaugh

Ah good new\'s chap!

I have a wing in the garage which I have repaired and just taking the rust out of it where all the bolts go in along the bottom.  I will try both methods on both the insides of the wings and see what works (I may be some time! :Giggle )  Im trying it on the inside as it\'s a little extra protection for the wing and its my first time :o :p :rollin

i dont think its the same as hammerite to be honest - its an enamel paint

my mate priced it up and its about £25 for 2.5 litres and the company reckons that it will paint a mini no probs

i like the idea that its self leveling :D

Hey - Interloper,

You seem to be the resident paint guru around here, can you recommend a spray gun/compressor and relvant tools to use, I want to have a go at spraying up some body kit.

I have got some books on the subject and was going to do something like put cover my garage in some sort of plastic covering to stop dust and try and an extractor or some sort, what would you recommend for the extraction?

Thanks,

James
